There’s A New App Called YayYo. It’s Like Uber, But For Empty Promises.

Ramy El-Batrawi has founded 27 companies that are now inactive or dissolved, hawking everything from relationship counseling to futures trading to van rentals to Alaskan fishing vacations, a HuffPost review of state records finds. He even ran a travel agency in Palm Beach, Florida, with a Saudi arms dealer involved in the Iran-Contra affair, and was named as a go-between for an offshore entity  listed in the Panama Papers. In 2010, the Securities and Exchange Commission barred El-Batrawi from being an executive in a publicly traded company for five years as part of the settlement over a $130 million stock fraud case against a company he led until it collapsed in 2001. Now that his prohibition period is over, El-Batrawi has something new to sell: shares in YayYo, a price-comparing ride-sharing app that doesn’t currently work and is pronounced like outdated slang for cocaine. The company, with El-Batrawi as CEO, is trying to sell $50 million in stock ― which it can do thanks to newly relaxed securities laws that let speculative startups raise money from mom-and-pop investors.

The White House: Who’s Listening In?

The president is on a tear about all things (and people) that record and perhaps some that may have been on or near his person during meetings with now former FBI director, James Comey “James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press,” a duly agitated President Trump wrote on Twitter . It wasn’t really clear whether it was the prez himself who was the bearer of the hidden microphone. Yes, it was White House high drama at a level not seen since Alexander Butterfield revealed the presence of a secret White House taping system during Nixon’s tenure in the Oval Office and the current kerfuffle captures much of the aroma that infused Francis Ford Coppola’s 1974 Hollywood thriller, The Conversation (although I doubt, that unlike the film, whomever is doing the recording will have a crisis of conscience similar to the one endured by the flic’s protagonist played perfectly by Gene Hackman). I’ve had a fascination for all things that record and chalk that up to my father’s love of “gadgets.” Despite having little money to spare – living in a walk-up tenement in Brooklyn – he’d invest in stuff like an early 1950s Webcor reel-to-reel tape recorder, periodically parking it – and me – in front of our tiny-screen black and white TV to record live opera (when the networks were imbued with a bit of high culture). I’ve fond memories of watching the recorder’s green “magic eye” pulse along with the arias of Madame Butterly; becoming so mesmerized I’d often miss the moment when the reel end of 3M tape spun wildly in finality while I scrambled to thread a new one. At NYU Film School – in James Manilla’s sound course, circa 1970 – I was introduced to a piece of technology: so beautiful, so perfect, I still get thrills just looking at it.

Automation On AdWords – Smart Display, Enhanced CPC, and Dynamic Search

Google recently added Smart Display Campaigns to its roster of automated products, which already includes Smart Bidding and Dynamic Search Campaigns. All three elicit the drive to make online advertising simpler, more automatic, and less time-consuming. But how do these products actually work and what will the impact be for marketers? Google clearly isn’t new to automation. Almost all of its commercial products use some form of algorithmic programming and big data management

Mass Hacking: Time To Go Off-Line

Last week’s mass cyber-attack could produce the wrong lessons. The immediate takeaway seems to be that large institutions need much better cyber-security systems. But there’s a much simpler and better solution: Vital systems that can’t withstand the catastrophic risk of malicious hacking should just go offline. Hackers will always be able to find ways of getting into networked systems. The fantasy of ever better cyber-security is delusional.

When you’re a tiny toddler, grown-ups seem can seem like all-powerful giants.  In honor of Mother’s Day, Brawny Paper Towels released an ad that shows moms from the perspective of their toddlers. To create “Once a Mother, Always a Giant,” four moms gave their toddlers Snapchat Spectacles and captured ordinary moments in their everyday lives ― from cleaning up messes to cuddling at night to putting bandages on scrapes.  Basically, it’s clear that moms are superheroes. (And kids make a lot of messes.) — This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms. Visual Effects Artist Creates Breathtaking Trailer To Sell His Old Car

When it came to selling his beloved 1996 Suzuki Vitara, Eugene Romanovsky went full-on Hollywood. The Israel-based visual effects artist, from Latvia, created an action movie-style trailer to promote the 21-year-old vehicle. Water Bucket Cam Is The Soothing New Viral Sensation

Who knew watching  animals drinking water  could be so soothing?  A new clip going viral on YouTube features a camera at the bottom of a bucket in the Texas desert. The footage shows various creatures as they drop by for a sip or a slurp.  John Wells of the Field Lab ― an “ experiment in sustainable living ” located in southwest Texas ― said the bees seen early in the video were all rescued. He also wrote on reddit that the longhorn at the end of the video was his pet, Ben.  “ The bunny is named George . He was a rescue brought to me when he was pretty tiny,” Wells wrote. “He was released about a week later and is growing fast and is quite happy with the other 50+ wild desert cottontails that live here.” Wells has posted dozens of videos showing life in the desert;  he also writes a blog chronicling his experiences in Terlingua Ranch , about 300 miles west of San Antonio.    (h/t Bored Panda ) — This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms.
