Hydraulic Press Squeezes The Life Out Of A Bowling Ball (And Other Stuff)

Let’s hope they have a spare! The good folks at YouTube’s  Hydraulic Press Channel  pitted their compressing device against a bowling ball and pin in their latest video to go viral. They first crushed a pin, which slowly split apart. They then placed a bowling ball beneath the press — and the result was wildly different, as it exploded within milliseconds. The channel has previously crushed an alarm clock : A Nokia 3310 cell phone has felt their wrath: As has a Barbie doll : The bowling ball and pin video was posted online Saturday, and garnered more than 1 million views in the first 14 hours. The Finland-based channel itself has racked up more than 28 million views and 340,000 subscribers since it was set up in October.

‘Ice Wall’ Is Japan’s Last-Ditch Effort To Contain Fukushima Radiation

•  The nearly mile-long structure consists of underground pipes designed to form a frozen barrier around the crippled reactors. •  The $312 million system was completed last month, more than a year behind schedule. • Nearly 800,000 tons of radioactive water are already being stored onsite. Japanese authorities have activated a large subterranean “ice wall”  in a desperate attempt to stop radiation that’s been leaking from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant for five years. The wall consists of a series of underground refrigeration pipes meant to  form a frozen soil barrier  around the four reactors that were crippled during the  2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami .

Why You Should Become a Master of Single-Tasking if You Want to Get Ahead

I usually wake up to my phone’s alarm clock, scroll through the morning headlines, get ready for work listening to Spotify, read emails on the way to the office, and send a WhatsApp message to my mom. Sometimes I tweet something as I read the news, prepare spreadsheets, compose emails, and dive into Google Analytics. I might send a text to my roommate, watch a YouTube video someone shared with me, forward an interesting article to my team, and check a notification while I’m on Skype with a lead. I’ll bookmark websites to refer to later as I check my Facebook feed, scroll through more headlines from the bathroom, and post something to Instagram.

5 Free Digital Solutions for a Healthier, Happier Brain

There’s a growing discussion around how the time we spend behind a screen is damaging our mental and physical well-being. Science consistently points to the effects it has on our sleep, happiness, and productivity, while mindfulness bootcamps and digital diet plans have given way to an entire industry. Although we’re more aware now that passively scrolling and excessive technology use aren’t healthy habits, few of us are willing to toss our devices or embark on an expensive digital detox vacation. These solutions are neither sustainable, nor reasonable, and it’s time we look at things from a different perspective.

Microsoft Unveils Next Best Thing To Teleportation

Virtual teleportation is here, and Microsoft is eager to show it off. The tech giant has unveiled something it calls holoportation , which involves using 3D capture technology to beam someone’s image to another location in real time.  Users are surrounded by 3D cameras and then given HoloLens, or specialized headpieces that allow them to see other users in real time, explains Partner Research Manager Shahram Izadi in a  video tutorial the company posted to YouTube last week.  In a four-minute demonstration, Izadi first is visited by an assistant’s 3D image. They interact with each other directly — even move to give each other a high five — although their bodies are in different rooms. Next, a 3D image of Izadi’s daughter appears.
