New Polaroid-Like Instant Camera Literally an Impossible Project

Once upon a time, the coolest camera in the world was the Polaroid Swinger, a $19.95 instant camera that I got for a bar-mitzvah present in 1968 (or so a faded memory tells me). All the kids wanted one back then, thanks the incessant ear worm commercial jingle , apparently sung by Barry Manilow in a spot starring a pre- Love Story Ali McGraw. An appropriately-named Dutch outfit called the Impossible Project wants to defy the odds and current consumer photo behavior in this Instagram/selfie age by bringing back the coolness of the Swinger and instant cameras in general with its Polaroid-inspired I-1 model . The I-1 is now on sale at the MoMA Design Store in SoHo in lower Manhattan, where the company held a chic coming out party last week, for $299, but it will be available via the usual consumer technology retail suspects on May 24.

Fairphone Is the Ethical Smartphone that Wants You to Rethink Mobile Technology

By Alex Cequea I have a love-hate relationship with my iPhone. On the one hand, it’s powerful enough to make many of my own brain cells obsolete. On the other hand, it contributes to an economic system that skirts ethical lines via oppressive labor practices abroad, sourcing of conflict minerals that may or may not include child slavery, and planned obsolescence that like clockwork makes the phone useless after a couple of years. Even worse, if I want to repair my iPhone or exchange the components myself, I need special tools that only Apple uses. Fairphone wants to change all that, and 100,000 happy users from around the world are already on board

These #ImDumb Tweets Prove You’re Not Alone

Some people talk about painting themselves into a corner … other people do it literally.  To honor all the dumb, weird, or embarrassing things all of us do every day, Jimmy Fallon decided to make this week’s hashtag #ImDumb . So if you too have talked into a trash can at a drive-thru or thought Olivia Newton-John was three different people, don’t worry. You’re among friends. (And those friends are Olivia, Newt and John.) When I was a kid I thought Olivia Newton John was 3 people. Olivia, Newt, and John

High-Speed Hyperloop Hits 116 mph In 1.1 Seconds During First Public Test

Is this the future of travel?  Hyperloop One held the first public demonstration of its propulsion system on Wednesday, with a unmanned sled hitting 116 mph in just 1.1 seconds on a short stretch of track outside of Las Vegas.  Eventually, the company hopes the system will hit speeds of more than 700 mph.  According to The Wall Street Journal,  the hyperloop system doesn’t have brakes yet , so after the short test, the sled drove into a pool of sand: Hyperloop One is one of several companies working on transportation technology known as hyperloop, which will feature pods or cars racing through tubes in near-vacuum conditions with little to no air resistance to maximize efficiency and increase speed. Tesla cofounder Elon Musk released a white paper in 2013 in support of the technology. In an interview with All Things D, he called hyperloop ” a cross between a Concorde, a railgun and an air hockey table .” Earlier this week, the company announced that it had raised $80 million in financing and was changing its name from Hyperloop Technologies to Hyperloop One. The company is hoping its system will be operational within five years,  transporting passengers between Los Angeles and San Francisco in just 30 minutes , the BBC reported.  “When you think of hyperloop, you think maybe this is gonna happen years from now,” CEO Rob Lloyd said in a video released by the company. “It’s gonna happen much quicker than anyone imagines — and when it does, the world will never be the same .” Hyperloop One also said there will be more tests in the near future, and promised what it called a ” Kitty Hawk moment ” later this year. Kitty Hawk was the site where the Wright Brothers conducted their first successful flight  of the airplane in 1903

Don’t Even Bother Trying To Beat This Guy At ‘Donkey Kong’

Wes Copeland has not only obliterated his previous “Donkey Kong” world record, but he may have achieved the classic 1981 video game’s highest possible score.  He scored 1,218,000 points after three hours and 17 minutes of arcade cabinet play on Thursday, beating the world record of 1,195,100 points he set last month. Some video game experts have called Copeland’s marathon effort, which broke records on all gaming platforms, ” the perfect game .”   And so he has quit. ” New world record! This will be my last record score…  I don’t believe I can put up a game any higher than this,” the video gamer from Concord, Massachusetts, posted to Facebook.   ” I’ve stopped playing because I think if I sat down  and played every day for the next five years, I still don’t think I’d be able to beat this score,” he told entertainment website IGN. “It’s the equivalent of playing poker and being dealt 10 royal flushes in a row.” Is Copeland just being pessimistic?

Hair-Washing Robot Is Head And Shoulders Above The Routine

Robotics enthusiast and funny person Simone Giertz returns so we can once again laugh at the takeover of the machines. This time, Giertz has built a hair-washing robot . We don’t want to give too much away, but let’s just say we’re glad we’re bald. For you techies out there, Giertz writes in the YouTube description that she built the scalp-cleaning gizmo with “two Hitec servo motors, Actobotics from Servocity, an Arduino UNO and a 6V battery pack.” Good to know.      — This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms. Watch An Army Of Gummy Bears Come To A Sad And Sticky End

Is nothing sacred? Finnish factory owner  Lauri Vuohensilta  has used his dreaded hydraulic press to crush random objects in recent weeks.  Yes, it’s been super fun watching him obliterate a  bowling ball , cap gun ammo  and a  Lego person  (with the standard “don’t try this at home” warning). But this time, he may have gone too far. The  latest video Vuohensilta posted  to his Hydraulic Press Channel on YouTube shows him crushing a troupe of Gummy Bears. “They are quite small and tasty but they come in large numbers and they are aiming for world domination,” Vuohensilta says.
