Facebook Game Features Priest Attacking Gays

A Facebook game that allows players to control a priest who’s throwing stools at gay pride marchers is being taken down by the social media site. The game, called “Call of Taburetka,” essentially allows players to recreate the violence that broke out May 17 during a rally to mark International Day Against Homophobia in Tbilisi, Georgia. At least 17 people were injured when a mob of thousands of anti-gay Georgians — led in part by robed Georgian Orthodox priests — chased down lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) activists using stones, sticks and in at least one case, a stool. In “Call of Taburetka,” which translates to “Call of the Stool,” Towleroad notes, gamers control the stool-throwing priest of the mob and progress through the game by destroying marchers and buses. While a Call of Taburetka Game Facebook page has only a few dozen “likes,” closer to 1,000 people have liked the game itself, which has 2,600 users and a 4.5 stars rating. The game’s apparent developer, a Georgian named Kakha Giorgashvili , has responded to critics of the game on Facebook, saying the game is not homophobic but merely a re-enactment of the Tbilisi march : Dear friends, this game it not anti-gay.

WATCH: Boost Mobile Ad Gets In Your Face

Having a guy dunk over you and dig his sweaty crotch in your face is now a metaphor for what a cell phone contract feels like. Boost Mobile’s “Junk Dunk” online ad takes viewers to a pickup basketball game and makes its point with below-the-belt goofiness. As the dunk is carried out, one player is left with a face full of privates and the dunker is left with a head full of wisdom about restrictive wireless deals. “That’s just nuts,” he says. A spokeswoman for the 180LA ad agency behind the spot told The Huffington Post the commercial is supposed to be “emblematic of how awful contract plans can be.” A rollout of Boost Mobile’s campaign touting its pay-by-the-month deal is planned for the summer, she added

WATCH: Near Disaster As Drone Scrapes Past Passenger Plane

Footage apparently recorded by a German drone shows what looks like a terrifying near-collision between the unmanned craft and an Afghan passenger plane. The video , which is nine years old and was recently rediscovered on YouTube, appears to show an Ariana Afghan Airline’s Airbus A300 passenger plane carrying approximately 100 people, approaching the drone, writes English-language German news outlet The Local. The surveillance drone, known as a Luna, has been used in sparsely populated areas by German forces for the past 10 years, according to the site. The distance between the two aircraft “could not have been much more than a couple of meters,” according to German paper Der Spiegel. “Had they made contact, the Airbus almost certainly would have crashed.” The Local speculates that the nine-year-old footage, which had reportedly been classified, is circulating now because of German Defense Minister Thomas de Maizière’s decision not to equip the Euro Hawk, sucessor to the Luna, with expensive anti-collision technology

Abraham H. Foxman: Why We Wrote ‘Viral Hate’

There is an epidemic of Internet hate. With each advance in technology over the last two decades, from the appearance of web sites and the interactivity of AOL through the blossoming of social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube and the recent explosion in mobile computing and texting, we have seen how anti-Semites, racists anti-Islamists, homophobes, misogynists, anti-immigrants and other kinds of haters have embraced the new technologies to spread their lives, to recruit and to mislead. From the earliest years of the Internet era it became clear that the haters would be among the first not only to recognize the incredible potential of this technology, but successfully exploit it for their own ends. Today, while it is a marvelous medium for education, communication, entertainment and commerce, the ways in which the Internet is being used to disseminate and promote hateful and violent beliefs and attitudes are astounding, varied and continually multiplying. In an effort to look more closely at the extent of the problem — and to probe for possible solutions — I recently joined together with my longtime friend and colleague Christopher Wolf, an expert in Internet law and Chair of the Anti-Defamation League’s Civil Rights Committee, to explore these issues and to offer a blueprint for the Internet industry, the world community and societies to work together toward a solution

How Weather Drones Will Unravel Tornados

TULSA, Oklahoma (AP) — At the time it premiered, the film “Twister” put forth a fantastical science fiction idea: Release probes into a storm in order to figure out which tornadoes could develop into killers. It’s no longer fiction. Oklahoma State University researchers are designing and building sleek, Kevlar-reinforced unmanned aircraft — or drones — to fly directly into the worst storms and send back real-time data to first responders and forecasters. “We have all the elements in place that make this the right place for this study to occur,” said Stephen McKeever, Oklahoma’s secretary of science and technology. “We have the world’s best natural laboratory.” Oklahoma is the heart of Tornado Alley, and has emerged battered, yet standing, from seven tornadoes with winds exceeding 200 mph (320 kph) — tied with Alabama for the most EF5 storms recorded. EF5 is the most powerful storm on the scale measuring tornado strength.

Israeli Army Disciplines Female Soldiers For Racy Photos

JERUSALEM — The Israeli military said Sunday that it has disciplined a group of female soldiers who posed for photos in underwear and combat gear and posted the images on Facebook. The incident was the latest in a string of episodes involving young Israeli soldiers on social media that have drawn reprimand from the military. Israeli news site Walla said the women were new recruits stationed on a base in southern Israel. One picture showed the soldiers removing their fatigue uniforms to expose their underwear and back sides. In another, five women posed in what appeared to be a barracks room, dressed only in helmets and a small amount of combat equipment.

Crime, Chicago and social media

Somewhere in the Chicago Police Department, someone spends more time on YouTube and Twitter than you do. Social networks and content-sharing sites have made it easier than ever for would-be criminals to sell stolen goods online, harass people, or organize a mob like the ones that besieged the Loop last month. But it's also easier for police officials to keep track of those activities and make …
