Elizabeth Warren Puts GOP On Notice: This Is Just The Beginning

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) is putting newly confirmed Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Republican senators who approved him on notice.  GOP lawmakers on Tuesday night invoked Rule 19 , which forbids speaking ill of other senators, to silence Warren as she attempted to read a letter from Coretta Scott King criticizing Sessions.  “She was warned. She was given an explanation,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said. “Nevertheless, she persisted .” Less than 24 hours later, Warren fired off a blistering series of tweets noting that Sessions is no longer a senator ― and no longer protected by Rule 19.  She also had a warning for her GOP counterparts who confirmed him.  Here’s what she said Wednesday evening:  I’m deeply disappointed that the Senate voted to confirm Jeff Sessions as Attorney General tonight. — Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) February 9, 2017 Deeply disappointed that the Senate confirmed an AG whose record does not show he will faithfully & fairly enforce the law

Video Views – Has Facebook Been Lying To Advertisers?

Early news from Nielsen in Australia has perhaps revealed the true performance of Facebook’s video ad streaming. A recent change in the way Nielsen  reports video views indicates that Facebook has been hugely inflating the volume of actual video streams on their platform. It flies in the face of many commentators who claimed Facebook was taking over YouTube as the main video consumption platform, and is sure to make all Facebook advertisers re-examine their media plans in 2017. This news has come after a recent announcement that Facebook had  overestimated the length of its video views by possibly 80% last year. This had huge repercussion for advertisers, who felt they were guided by unreliable metrics and who potentially spent a lot more budget on Facebook than they would have knowing the true impact.

Trump’s Travel Ban Is Stranding Game Developers, Too

By Julie Muncy for WIRED . Each year, the Game Developers Conference offers videogame creators from around the world the opportunity to show off their wares to hordes of eager fans. This time around, developers who can’t make it to San Francisco for the confab because of President Trump’s travel ban won’t get that chance. Not in person, at least. To help them out, videogame publisher Devolver Digital is opening up their display space at GDC to show off the work of those whose trip to GDC was derailed by Trump’s executive order. Typically, Devolver Digital runs a space adjacent to the event to showcase their own games.

Robot Revolution: Why Technology For Older People Must Be Designed With Care And Respect

A Japanese dementia patient holds a baby seal robot known as Paro. Kim Kyung-Hoon/Reuters Nola Ries , University of Newcastle and Taro Sugihara , Okayama University Many countries around the world have ageing populations and a growing prevalence of dementia. Japan, in particular, is a “super-ageing” society, with a population getting older faster than anywhere else in the world due to long life expectancy and low birth rates . In 2015, an article in The Lancet medical journal pointed out that “Japan will be at the forefront of devising ways to tackle the social, economic, and medical challenges posed by a super-ageing society.” A high-tech innovator, the country is producing robots for people with dementia – to provide companionship, improve safety in the home, and help with therapy. Other countries are jumping on board with initiatives to incorporate service robots into dementia care. But we must make sure that people, especially those living with dementia, are firmly at the centre of research and development

Google Workers Stage Large-Scale Walkout To Protest Trump’s Executive Order On Immigration

Google workers across the country kicked off the week by walking off the job to protest President Donald Trump ’s executive order on immigration , which temporarily bans citizens from seven predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States. Photos showed hundreds of Googlers rallying outside several company offices Monday, including its global headquarters in Mountain View, California. CEO Sundar Pichai and co-founder Sergey Brin joined their employees and  delivered an emotional series of speeches  to the crowd. Participants chanted, “You build a wall, we’ll tear it down!” and “No hate! No fear! Immigrants are welcome here!” while waving handmade signs featuring messages such as, “Build Bridges, Not Walls” and “Refugees Welcome.” “So many people were obviously outraged by this order, as am I myself, being an immigrant and a refugee,” Brin told the crowd of employees Monday. “I wouldn’t be where I am today or have any kind of the life that I have today if this was not a brave country that really stood out and spoke for liberty.” Brin, who was 6 when his family immigrated to the U.S. from the Soviet Union during the Cold War, joined protests  against the immigration ban at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday.

Bots_Alive Review, A Hack To Bring Hexbug Spiders To Life?

The Robot uprising has started! Bots_Alive is bringing Hexbug Spiders to life. Resistance is futile. Okay, for now “coming to life” is making Hexbug Spiders autonomously move and avoid red blocks while searching for the beloved blue blocks…but the uprising has to start somewhere. Bots_Alive, now live on Kickstarter , is a kit that turns mindless remote-controlled Hexbug® Spiders into smart and autonomous creatures. We got our hands on an early prototype of the Bots_Alive and created the following video review – With Bots_Alive, It Is All About the Movement As the video shows, the thing that makes bots_alive truly interesting is the organic movement of the robotic spider. The Hexbug Spider makes mistakes, bumps into things, takes indirect routes…all things that a living creature would do.
