Former Commish Michael Copps: ‘Maybe The Worst FCC I’ve Ever Seen’

In just a few short months, the Trump wrecking ball has pounded away at rules and regulations in virtually every government agency. The men and women the president has appointed to the Cabinet and to head those agencies are so far in sycophantic lockstep, engaged in dismantling years of protections in order to make real what White House strategist Steve Bannon infamously described as “the deconstruction of the administrative state.” The Federal Communications Commission is not immune. Its new chair, Republican Ajit Pai, embraces the Trump doctrine of regulatory devastation. “It’s basic economics,” he declared in an April 26 speech at Washington’s Newseum . “The more heavily you regulate something, the less of it you’re likely to get.” His goal is to stem the tide of media reform that in recent years has made significant progress for American citizens. Even as we rely more than ever on digital media for information, education and entertainment, Pai and his GOP colleagues at the FCC seek to turn back the clock and increase even more the corporate control of cyberspace.

This Stunning Video Aims To Raise LGBTQ Awareness Through Dance

Two men get into the Pride Month groove on the Los Angeles streets in this colorful music video that’s also a retro-inspired meet cute.  Released by the DanceOn Network , the video stars dancers Derek Tabada and Will Johnston , who sport jewel-toned Paul Smith suits as they perform a playful, acrobatic routine to the tune of singer-songwriter  Dylan Hyde ’s “Clearly.” Eagle-eyed viewers may recognize Johnston, who also choreographed the number, from “ The LGBTQAlphabet ,” a similarly queer-inclusive video produced by Equinox in collaboration with the LGBT Community Center  and released earlier this month.  At one point, the dancers strut their stuff in front of Paul Smith’s West Hollywood storefront , which received a rainbow makeover earlier this month as part of an Instagram Pride Month initiative .  DanceOn CEO Amanda Taylor told HuffPost her company hoped to “act as an ally and an advocate” for the LGBTQ community by releasing the video, which aims to “channel artistic expression for positive change.” Last year, the group produced a contemporary dance homage to Orlando’s  Pulse nightclub tragedy  that has since received over 2 million views on YouTube .  The Paul Smith storefront, of course, is typically painted pink , and is known as one of the most photographed locations  of its kind in Southern California. Unveiled June 7, the new paint job is one of five “rainbow walls” created by Instagram to “strengthen relationships through shared experiences,” particularly among members of the LGBTQ community. Visitors are asked to share images of themselves in front of the five walls, which will also appear in London, Madrid, Cleveland and Nashville, Tennessee, with the hashtag #KindComments so that others can use Instagram to find a “community of support.” “For Pride, we hope the rainbow walls become physical structures that inspire kind comments and support,” Instagram’s Chief Operating Officer Marne Levine  told HuffPost, “but equally create an opportunity for people to come together on Instagram to support the LGBTQ community.” Take a look at some photographs from the June 7 rainbow wall debut below.  Find ways to celebrate Pride by subscribing to the Queer Voices newsletter .      — This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms. This Groundbreaking Online School Is About To Revolutionize Sex Ed

Sex Heroes is an ongoing HuffPost Q&A series by  Voices Editorial Director Noah Michelson  that explores the lives and experiences of individuals who are challenging, and thereby changing, mainstream culture’s understanding of sex and sexuality.  Try googling “ sexual education in America ” and then sit back and wait for the depression to wash over you as you read headlines like “ Sex-Ed In America Is Even Worse Than You Thought ” and “ These Maps Show Where Kids In America Get Terrifying Sex Ed .” From woefully inadequate abstinence-only curriculums to programs that neglect to discuss consent or queer sex ― much less pleasure ― it’s no small feat to locate informative, accessible classes in this country that realistically prepare individuals for sexual encounters.   Andrea Barrica wants to change all of that. The 27-year-old queer Filipina-American  technology entrepreneur is preparing to launch O.school , a groundbreaking shame-free online platform for pleasure education, this fall. The school will offer courses, led by instructors from communities around the country, to help participants “un-learn” elements of problematic sex ed they may have previously encountered. The classes will also be dedicated to investigating and championing sexual issues specifically facing queer people and people of color, addressing sexual trauma, and celebrating female sexuality and pleasure. I recently spoke with Barrica to learn more about her plan to bring her pleasure-based sex ed to the masses, how she intends to reach victims of toxic masculinity, and more.  HuffPost: Where did the idea for O.school come from?

So THAT’S What The Numbers On Airport Runways Mean

Another great mystery  of air travel  is solved.  There’s a fascinating explanation for those giant numbers and letters  you see on the ends of  airport  runways: They provide some very handy direction for pilots , as explained in the video above  from Business Insider.  The numbers are always between 1 and 36, and the difference between the numbers on either end of the same runway is always 18. Sometimes, they’re followed by a letter with a meaning all its own, and sometimes, they change based on the earth’s magnetic north.  Watch above for the riveting rundown. — This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms. Camera Catches Toddler Helping Baby Brother Make Epic Crib Escape

Bryan and Missy Lanning have their hands full with two sons under 4. And as this viral Nest Cam video shows, the kiddos are giving them a run for their money. The Lannings, who run the popular vlog Daily Bumps , shared a video on their YouTube channel and Facebook page  showing their toddler, Oliver, helping his little brother, Finely, escape his crib. The baby jailbreak is pretty epic, as 3-year-old Ollie gives 1-year-old Finn a chair and demonstrates how to use it to get out of the crib. Though the classic toddler mischief is hilarious, the video is also pretty heartwarming as it highlights the bond between the two brothers. “You can do it!” Ollie says to Finn before catching him

So THAT’S What Those ‘Ding’ Sounds During Flights Are All About

If you fly, you’re likely familiar with the  ding sound  made when the “fasten seat belt” sign turns off, signaling you’re free to move about the cabin. But discerning ears may have noticed the ding, or chime, occurs at other times during the flight , too: Sometimes it’s a single chime long before the seat belt sign turns off, and sometimes it’s a two-toned rhythm, with a high-pitched chime followed by a low one. Other times, the sound is more like a “boing.”  Of course, these noises aren’t random . Turns out they’re all part of a carrier’s secret code for its cabin crew. Take Qantas Airways , for example.  “On our  Airbus aircraft you’ll hear the ‘boing’ sound shortly after take-off ― this sound lets crew know that the landing gear is being retracted . The second boing is usually when the seat belt sign is switched off,” the airline explained in a blog post last year.  Qantas uses a single chime  to alert crew when a passenger is asking for assistance at their seat. A high-low chime combination  is the sound of the crew calling each other on their in-flight phone system

Stephen Colbert Leads 360-Degree Tour Of His Studio For The Superfans

Stephen Colbert has become a very popular late-night host. Just last month, the comedian officially won the ratings battle between the various late shows, besting the Jimmys in an upset. Most of this new audience has come for the Donald Trump jokes, which Colbert has made his current specialty. As such, YouTube clips from “The Late Show” often gain a large viewership when he makes fun of the current president. But his latest viral video actually doesn’t have a single mention of Trump. In a segment aimed at the Colbert superfans ― of which there are apparently many ― “The Late Show” host gave a somewhat “Birdman”-style tour of the program’s backstage.
