Mike Smith: Something Old Is New Again: Hot TechCrunch

Start-ups do best when there is an established market and people already have expressed a need. What seemed to be the overarching theme at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in New York this month? Some ideas are ready to go to market and some are still inspirations on the back of a napkin. But seeing early stage firms with only $350,000 to $550,000 in funding is pretty cool. “When people laugh at a company or say: ‘this is the stupidest thing I have ever heard,’ you are listening,” said Fred Wilson of Union Square Ventures

Why No Big Wireless Carriers Protect Journalist Phone Records

NEW YORK — Verizon Wireless turned over personal cellphone records for Associated Press journalists without giving them a chance to challenge subpoenas as part of an extraordinary Department of Justice national security leak investigation, the New York Times reported on Tuesday . But there was nothing extraordinary about what Verizon Wireless apparently did. Hundreds of thousands of times every year, cellphone companies turn over personal call records to law enforcement with neither a warning nor a judge’s involvement. Privacy activists said it’s no way for carriers to treat paying customers. They said they hope the AP controversy will force the big cell companies to change their ways. “This is the phone companies putting the interest of law enforcement before their customers, and that’s wrong,” said Christopher Soghoian, principal technologist for the American Civil Liberties Union.

What Twitter’s ESPN Deal Means

Twitter is increasingly pressing beyond the confines of the 140 character text messages that defined the social network at its inception. The Twitter timeline of today — replete with tweets that feature pictures, videos, music and short clips of news articles — is far from the timeline of truncated status updates that launched the social network seven years ago. Indeed, the company seems intent on challenging nearly every social media competitor, from Instagram to Facebook to YouTube. The latest sign of Twitter’s expanding ambitions comes with a report from The Wall Street Journal that the social network plans to distribute ESPN highlights, signaling that the company is serious about integrating content that will keep users glued to their feeds. “What’s become quite evident is the way that people like to communicate isn’t just through text,” said Mark Shaw , a London-based social media consultant who specializes in advising companies about Twitter

By: Stephanie Pappas, LiveScience Senior Writer Published: 05/14/2013 02:19 PM EDT on LiveScience Worried that everyone else is doing something cool without you? You may have FOMO — Fear of Missing Out. Even worse, a new study finds, you may be less satisfied with your life than the average person. People high in FOMO, as the online acronym would have it, feel less competent, less autonomous and less connected with others than people who don’t worry about being left out , according to the study published in the July issue of the journal Computers in Human Behavior. But what’s bad for individuals may just be good for Facebook: People high in FOMO were also more likely to use social media , seemingly driven by a need to see what’s going on when they’re not around. What Really Scares People: Top 10 Phobias “Fear of missing out acts as an important kind of waystation,” study researcher Andrew Przybylski, a psychologist at the University of Essex in England, told LiveScience

Twitter Just Got Even Bigger

SUNNYVALE — Twitter has established its first presence in the South Bay by leasing an office in downtown Sunnyvale, and real estate agents said Thursday that it may expand its local operations further. The San Francisco-based microblogging service has leased 8,000 square feet near the Caltrain station in Sunnyvale, according to brokers with Colliers International who arranged the deal. “This is a big deal for this area — a tech company from San Francisco opening an office in Silicon Valley,” said Colliers broker Kevin Moul. A number of high-profile companies have agreed to lease large blocks of space in Sunnyvale over the last several months, including Apple (AAPL), Google (GOOG), LinkedIn and Amazon unit Lab 126. “Twitter bypassed Mountain View and Palo Alto, even though there are blocks of space the same size as this lease, because we do offer the ability to expand at our location,” said David Sandlin, a senior vice president with Colliers. “Twitter is on a high growth curve.” The new Twitter office would have about 40 to 50 employees, based on the size of the Twitter lease and the typical allowance for employees per square foot of space
