Abraham H. Foxman: Why We Wrote ‘Viral Hate’

There is an epidemic of Internet hate. With each advance in technology over the last two decades, from the appearance of web sites and the interactivity of AOL through the blossoming of social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube and the recent explosion in mobile computing and texting, we have seen how anti-Semites, racists anti-Islamists, homophobes, misogynists, anti-immigrants and other kinds of haters have embraced the new technologies to spread their lives, to recruit and to mislead. From the earliest years of the Internet era it became clear that the haters would be among the first not only to recognize the incredible potential of this technology, but successfully exploit it for their own ends. Today, while it is a marvelous medium for education, communication, entertainment and commerce, the ways in which the Internet is being used to disseminate and promote hateful and violent beliefs and attitudes are astounding, varied and continually multiplying. In an effort to look more closely at the extent of the problem — and to probe for possible solutions — I recently joined together with my longtime friend and colleague Christopher Wolf, an expert in Internet law and Chair of the Anti-Defamation League’s Civil Rights Committee, to explore these issues and to offer a blueprint for the Internet industry, the world community and societies to work together toward a solution

Steven Strauss: Managing Innovation

Begin by Defining Outcomes, Outputs and Inputs Innovation is the buzz word du jour . Each year, vast piles of PowerPoint handouts are distributed to cultivate and fertilize innovation — many containing concepts (figuratively speaking) with the aroma of manure. Innovation is difficult, but presenting it as an obscure unmeasurable esoteric art does not make it easier. Definition and measurement matter, as Peter Drucker observed: “If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it.” An Internet search for “innovation” yields over 200 million results , including listings for Chief Innovation Officers of companies (such as AMD, Citigroup, Coca Cola, DuPont, and Humana ) and cities .

PHOTO: Weather Channel’s SUV Destroyed During Tornado Chase

As tornadoes swept through the Oklahoma City area on Friday evening, storm chasers in cars tracked their movements, relaying updates and video to a number of news outlets. But getting close to violent storms is inherently risky, and the storm chasers with The Weather Channel Tornado Hunt Team had a very close call . According to The Weather Channel’s website: Meteorologist Mike Bettes was chasing the monster rain-wrapped tornado near El Reno, Okla. when he says the storm picked up the heavy chase SUV and threw it an estimated 200 yards. The team all had their seat belts on and survived with minor injuries.
