Rebecca Searles: What’s Wrong With This Picture?

Yesterday, STEMconnector released a list of the top 100 CEO leaders in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). But something stood out about their photo compilation of these powerful STEM head honchos. Oh, they’re all dudes. Oh, and they’re all white dudes. Out of 100 profiled STEM executives, only 12 are women. And even less appear to be anything other than Caucasian.

LISTEN: NSA Song Protests Government Spying

Every major national scandal has its creative protest. And with his song ” Tinfoil in Every Hat (Hey Hey, NSA) ,” San Francisco musician Brooks Rocco has provided just that. Frustrated over recent revelations that the National Security Agency has been spying on U.S. citizens , Rocco reportedly wrote, performed and recorded the entire song himself in one night. “After yesterday’s revelations by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, I went out for a bike ride and started singing into the wind,” Rocco told The Huffington Post

Questions Raised Over How Secret Program Helped Foil Major Terror Plot

WASHINGTON — The government’s broad programs to collect U.S. phone records and Internet traffic helped disrupt a 2009 plot to bomb the New York City subways, a senior U.S. intelligence official said. But the assertion raises as many questions as it answers because court testimony indicated the subway plot investigation began with an email. Over the past days, The Guardian newspaper and The Washington Post have revealed classified documents showing how the National Security Agency sweeps up phone records and Internet data in its hunt for terrorists.

Jeff Jarvis: The Government and Its Secrets: A Matter of Principles

America is supposed to be a nation governed by principles, which are undergirded by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and carried into law. The discussion about the government and its capture of *our* data should be held on the level of principles. Privacy : Our direct and personal communication in any medium and by any means — mail, email, phone, VOIP, Twitter DM, and any technology yet to be invented — should be considered private, as our physical mail is, and subject to government intervention only through lawful warrant. That is not the case . Thus it is quite reasonable to be disturbed at the news that government can demand and receive communication we believe to be private. Government may call itself the protector of our privacy but it is our privacy’s worst enemy.

NEW YORK — For more than a decade now, Americans have made peace with the uneasy knowledge that someone – government, business or both – might be watching. We knew that the technology was there. We knew that the law might allow it. As we stood under a security camera at a street corner, connected with friends online or talked on a smartphone equipped with GPS, we knew, too, it was conceivable that we might be monitored.
