Leaving The Misery Machine (Facebook)

“Man, you did it,” My friend Casey said. “I applaud you.” • • • He was referencing my leaving Facebook a month ago. He’s heard me mention wanting to leave many times over the past five years that we’ve known each other, with increasing frequency coming into the end of 2016. But he never thought I’d actually do it. Hell, I never thought I’d actually do it, to be honest

Creationist Ken Ham Gets Into Weirdest Twitter Fight With Washington Post Over Dinosaurs

Creationist Ken Ham is steaming mad over a Washington Post article that claims his giant Noah’s Ark attraction teaches tourists that dinosaurs died in the biblical flood .  Hey @washingtonpost we at @ArkEncounter have NEVER said Dinosaurs were wiped out during Flood-get your facts right https://t.co/BLzQp1mKa0 — Ken Ham (@aigkenham) January 1, 2017 Ham, who believes the Earth is about 6,000 years old, fired off several additional tweets directed at the Post over the story.  Indeed, the Ark Encounter doesn’t claim all dinos died out during the flood. Rather, it features dinosaurs living in cages  like the other animals.  His organization has said most dinosaurs died in the flood, which it claims took place 4,300 years ago.  “Those descended from the ones which got off the Ark eventually succumbed to the same sorts of pressures which cause extinction in animal populations today,” a 2011 blogpost said.  Scientists agree almost universally that dinosaurs were wiped out 65 million years ago, although researchers continue to study the specific causes. The American Museum of Natural History in New York notes that a comet or asteroid strike along with “ massive volcanic eruptions and changing sea levels ” all may have played a role.    (h/t Raw Story ) — This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms. Donald Trump’s Incoming Press Secretary Suggests Russia’s Role In Hacking Is Irrelevant

President-elect Donald Trump ’s incoming press secretary, Sean Spicer, wants Americans to focus more on the DNC’s cybersecurity efforts than Russia’s role in a recent cyberattack against U.S. government servers. Spicer chose to dance around questions regarding Kremlin involvement in the attack on a Monday “Fox & Friends” appearance . When asked point-blank if Russia was behind the hacking, he failed to formulate a coherent response. He stumbled on his words: But a question ― there’s a difference between whether they were behind ― look, every ― look, there’s of ― you know ― “probing” is the actual word when you go out and try to go to various sites ― whether or not they were hacked and they did anything is a completely different story

Japanese Restrooms Offer Special Toilet Paper For Wiping Phones

When you’re cleaning up after number two, don’t forget your number one gadget. NTT Docomo, a unit of Japan ’s telecom giant, has installed smartphone wipes in restrooms at Tokyo Narita International Airport. The company even posted a helpful instructional video on how to use Japanese toilets and bidets (which it calls a “shower”) as well as the new smartphone wipes.  The company said the wipes will be in some of the Narita bathrooms until March 15. The wipes also double as ads for NTT’s wifi service, as well as a travel guide app that offers voice translation for visitors to Japan.  But no matter where you are, giving the phone a wipe isn’t a bad idea: A 2012 study for the Wall Street Journal found poop germs on all eight of the cellphones randomly tested,  while a University of Arizona study found that phones are 10 times germier than the typical toilet seat .  H/T Manga University — This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms. Astronauts Take Mannequin Challenge To New Heights In International Space Station

We got the whole crew together and took the #MannequinChallenge to new heights #Proxima pic.twitter.com/vlOglQ3lEh — Thomas Pesquet (@Thom_astro) December 29, 2016 It’s hard to look frozen when you’re floating, weightless in space. But the crew aboard the International Space Station somehow managed to do it — and in spectacular style. European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Pesquet tweeted a video Thursday of himself and four colleagues doing the mannequin challenge, one-upping everyone on the planet who’d ever attempted the viral craze in the process. Some clearly are hooking a foot or hand over some solid support to help them remain motionless as the cameraman floats by in the French astronaut’s video, above. Bizarrely, a crewmember holding a camera is also part of the outer-space “tableau.” “We got the whole crew together and took the # MannequinChallenge to new heights,” crowed Pesquet  on Twitter in English and French. “The result is kind of sci-fi spooky don’t you think?” he wrote on Facebook. Pesquet said the crew had their “bit of fun in microgravity” on their day off Sunday.

Why I’m Slowly Leaving WordPress To Blog At Medium

Hmm, how do I put this? I’m in love with a platform called Medium. What’s Medium? It’s kind of like a mash-up of Twitter and WordPress, where you can import stories, write stories, and follow other writers you enjoyed reading. The best part is, it’s taking off. VentureBeat reported a month ago that Medium grew by 140% this year , attracting 60 million monthly visitors.

U.S.-Russia Relations Are Increasingly Unpredictable — And Syria Is On The Line

MOSCOW – After months of speculation around Russian intervention in the U.S. presidential election, we seem to be hitting a tipping point. In a strong move likely to be one of his last as commander-in-chief, U.S. President Barack Obama slapped new sanctions on Moscow, expelling 35 Russian officials from the U.S.
