Feds Abandon Effort To Force Twitter To Identify Owner Of Anonymous Anti-Trump Account

Just one day after Twitter filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, the U.S. government has abandoned its effort to force the media company to reveal the identity behind an anonymous account critical of the president and his immigration policies. The retraction follows intense scrutiny of the government’s attempt to unveil the identity by the press and the American Civil Liberties Union. Twitter voluntarily withdrew its lawsuit against U.S. Customs and Border Protection on Friday.  Twitter  had filed the suit Thursday over allegations that CBP issued a summons to Twitter in March, demanding that it turn over records that would unmask the identity of the user or users behind the  @ALT_uscis , or “ALT Immigration,” account ― an anonymous account that is purportedly run by federal immigration authorities. The account is one of more than a dozen “rogue” federal agency accounts that appeared in the wake of President  Donald Trump’ s January inauguration and posts criticisms of the president’s positions on science, climate change and other issues. Ben Wizner, director of ACLU’s speech, privacy and technology project, tweeted in support of the dropped federal order on Friday.

Silicon Valley’s Plot To Reinvent The Dreaded Conference Call

By David Pierce for WIRED . Stepping into one of the “project rooms” at speaker-maker Sonos’s office in downtown Boston is like opening a teleportation portal. The large, messy space, cluttered with half-built soundbars and heaping piles of screws, almost exactly replicates a room 3,000 miles away in Santa Barbara. Two screens hang on the wall of each one, displaying live feeds from both offices. Microphones around the room make it impossible to even whisper without being heard across the country; a surgical camera hanging overhead can zoom in on tiny screws anywhere on the table.

Russian Hackers Are Working To Amplify Donald Trump’s Wiretapping Claim, Expert Warns

Russian hackers didn’t stop when the presidential election ended ― they’re still working to spread fake news and conspiracy theories  across the U.S., an intelligence expert warns. And they’re building on President  Donald Trump’s  wiretapping tweets, former FBI agent  Clint Watts  told National Public Radio. The operations are constantly reaching out to the Trump administration in an effort to push their own fake news, or to amplify something the president has tweeted, said Watts, a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute who testified last week before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Russian interference in the presidential election. One of those tweets include Trump’s baseless claim that he was wiretapped by the Obama administration, Watts said. “If you went online today, you could see these accounts — either bots or actual personas somewhere — that are trying to connect with the administration ,” Watts said in the NPR interview Monday. “They might broadcast stories and then follow up with another tweet that tries to gain the president’s attention — or they’ll try and answer the tweets that the president puts out.” Watts, a cyber security expert who has been tracking Russian activity for three years, called it a “circular system.” Sometimes the “propaganda outlets themselves will put out false or manipulated stories. Other times, the president will go with a conspiracy,” he told NPR

Living With The Incivility Of Trolls Online And Surviving

Anyone is capable of troll behavior, according to recent research from Stanford University and Cornell University. Wake-up on the wrong of bed, having a bad day or simply become irate over an online discussion and your fingers may go flying before your brain kicks in to bring it to a screeching halt. Did you know according to a UCLA study , people that overshare online are less like to receive empathy or help from others if they are being harassed or abused digitally by trolls? So humble braggers beware, if you’re constantly exaggerating (or oversharing) about your life events and suddenly find yourself as a target of online harassment, don’t be shocked if some of your friends aren’t stepping in to defend you. Trolls have been with us since the dawn of time; there will always be some incivility Pew Research Center and Elon University’s Imagining the Internet Center just released a new study that surveyed more than 1,500 technologists and scholars about the forces shaping the way people interact with one another online
