Twitter Inches Forward In Fight Against Abuse

Twitter trolls be warned: Mute is coming for you.  On Wednesday, the social media company unveiled a series of new measures  in its fight against harassment on the site, which ran particularly rampant  during the 2016 presidential campaign. The changes include increased automatic screening for abusive tweets, more powerful filtering options for users and greater transparency from Twitter about how it’s dealing with abusive accounts. Of the three, users will likely appreciate the expanded filtering options the most, particularly the powerful new “mute” features. According to Twitter, users will be able to mute specific phrases, keywords and conversations from their timelines. They’ll also be able to choose how long the mute is enforced, whether it’s one day or indefinitely

FCC Blocks Rules That Required Broadband Providers To Offer Better Protection Of Customers’ Data

U.S. regulators on Wednesday blocked some Obama administration rules on the eve of implementation, regulations that would have subjected broadband providers to stricter scrutiny than web sites face to protect customers’ private data. The reversal by the Trump administration’s U.S. Federal Communications Commission was a victory for internet providers such as AT&T Inc, Comcast Corp and Verizon Communications Inc. The rules aimed to protect personal consumer data

This Denny’s Tweet Will Take You On A Wild Philosophical Ride. No, Really.

We once lived in simpler times. Before the advent of Twitter, brands had a harder time trying to reach the disaffected youth with casual language and “hip” slang. In this new age, however, corporations regularly shower their target audiences on social media with verbiage like “ bae ,” “ fleek ” and, from IHOP, “ Back that stack up .” At this point, the notion of a brand trying to sound like a millennial’s peers is so commonplace, it’s more often derided than praised. But a recent “fun” tweet from chain restaurant Denny’s, better known for its 24-hour breakfast menu than its cool factor, has the whole internet shook — in a good way.

If You Have One Of These Toys In Your House, You May Want To Stop Using It

Sloppy data security practices at a toy company that sells a line of internet-connected stuffed animals has exposed the personal information of more than 800,000 customers, and some 2 million voice recordings ― many of them from children. The toy animals, manufactured by CloudPets , have the ability to store and replay voice messages sent to them via the internet. Ideally, that means traveling parents ― for instance, a deployed military member ― could send a heartfelt message to their child’s teddy bear at home, to be replayed when their child interacts with the bear: But since at least Christmas Day of last year, information on the CloudPets server ― including customers’ login and password information and voice recordings ― was stored in an exposed database easily accessible to anyone on the internet who knew where to look. Online security expert Troy Hunt is one of the first to have noticed the issue . He and several others attempted to alert CloudPets to the security oversight numerous times, yet never heard back.

People Who Live Without Screens Don’t Sleep Any Better Than The Rest Of Us

Sleep experts are quick to blame bright street lights, TVs and the ever-distracting smartphone as the reasons why nearly one-third of U.S. adults don’t clock enough sleep  on a regular basis. (For good reason ― some types of light can seriously mess with the body’s ability to wind down before sleep .) But a new study published in the journal Human Biology this month suggests that even without distractions from artificial light sources and other modern technology, human sleep patterns can  still  be far from ideal. A group of researchers, most of them from Duke University, tracked the sleep patterns of people living in a Madagascar farming village without electricity and few other sources of artificial light. The data showed the villagers  slept less than a similarly sized group of people of the same ages in the U.S. and another similar group in Italy

Elon Musk Is Sticking With Trump For SpaceX Contracts

These are troubling times for Elon Musk. Last week, Tesla, his electric car manufacturer, announced the company’s latest round of bad financial news; for the fourth quarter of 2016, Tesla lost 69 cents a share, a larger loss than Wall Street analysts had expected. Even more troubling, Chief Financial Officer Jason Wheeler announced he would step down in April, continuing a trend of, according to one financial outlet, “ executives ….leaving the company in droves.” With Tesla looking at more financial losses in the future, Musk revealed that to avoid getting “close to the edge,” which would “probably not be the best thing for shareholders,” he intended to raise additional capital — yet again. Musk may need the money if the United Auto Workers gets its way and organizes Tesla’s currently nonunionized workers — a move vehemently opposed by Musk, who has gone so far as to denounce one Tesla worker’s allegation that he and his fellow employees sometimes face unsafe working conditions as “ morally outrageous .” Musk’s comment offended some progressives. Then again, ever since the election in November, the left has been disturbed by Musk’s apparent deference to President Trump

Google Doodle Celebrates Planetary Discovery In The Most Adorable Way

View post on imgur.com Google is celebrating this week’s planetary discovery with a home page doodle that’s out of this world. In an adorable cartoon, Earth is seen peering out into space with a telescope as the moon ― a.k.a. “Earth’s little buddy,” as Canadian  astronaut Chris Hadfield described it ― watches from behind. That’s when Earth comes across one lone exoplanet smiling back at it, leading to an ambush of six other cosmic characters. One even waves back.  The colorful doodle, which was crafted by Nate Swinehart , graced the home page one day after NASA announced the discovery of seven exoplanets some 40 light-years away, part of what scientists have named the TRAPPIST-1 system ― after the TRAPPIST telescope that found them.
