Twitter is all Bark and no Bite with $167million loss

The continued performance failure of $167million reported loss in last three months of 2016 and a stagnant 4% growth of total users at Twitter is part of an underlying structural problem and culture at the company inability to move beyond its early foundations of a simple microblog. The use of Twitter by Trump for his political campaign is just a side show when it’s 319 million user base are simply not engaged enough in direct revenue generation for the company. Perhaps it is Twitter unique position as a social media voice that is easy to use, after all it is just 140 characters right? But this is missing the point abut its role as a monetizable mediator to other industries and social groups that as yet seems to be an unfulfilled dream. Twitter management while investing is media streaming and niche changes to the website, have failed to grasp the opportunities that Facebook and LinkedIn have in monetizing their users by advertising or selling subscriptions for communities and lifestyles

Anyone Can Become An Internet Troll, According To Stanford Computer Scientists

Most people are quick to dismiss internet trolls as completely unlike themselves ― the fabled 400-pound guy sitting on his bed , for instance. And with partisan rage taking over Twitter  alongside the election of a  troller in chief , it can feel like we’re living in the golden age of internet trolling: Posting inflammatory and offensive comments online for the purpose of provoking others has become a sadly common phenomenon.  Thanks to a new study from computer scientists at Stanford and Cornell , we now have a better understanding of how ordinary people easily adopt this antisocial and damaging behavior.  The truth is, under the right circumstances, anyone can become a troll, posting comments or updates that are intended to be provocative, offensive and insulting.  The findings, which will be presented at the 2017 Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing , suggest that trolling isn’t an innate characteristic, but rather a behavior that can be stimulated.  “Certainly the sociopaths exist, but understanding that ordinary people aren’t completely innocent, and can be susceptible to trolling too, can help explain how trolling might spread through a community and become prevalent,” Justin Cheng, a Stanford computer scientist and one of the study’s lead authors, told The Huffington Post. How to build a troll in two steps  For the experiment, the researchers recruited 667 people through a crowdsourcing platform. The participants were given a test that was either simple or very difficult, and then were asked to answer questions about their mood.

The Raised Fist Emoji Is Social Media’s Resistance Symbol

We’ve long used emojis to communicate our feelings when words can’t. But what happens when they take on a deeper meaning, becoming a symbol for an entire movement? Recently, Hamdan Azhar , founder of data journalism lab Prismoji , decided to explore the use of emojis in viral movements. He analyzed about 60,000 tweets related to hot-button topics like #NoBanNoWall, #NoMuslimBan, #NotMyPresident, #TheResistance, and #WomensMarch to find out which emojis appeared most frequently in those messages. In a blog post for Emojipedia , Azhar outlined his findings.  The red heart (❤️️ ), tears of joy ( ), the American flag ( ) and the raised fist (✊) were among the most commonly used emojis. While it’s not surprising that people use the raised fist as an expression of solidarity, Azhar notes that it’s become “a signature emoji of progressive protest.” It even showed up as one of the top five emojis for all of the protest-related hashtags Azhar studied, including #BlackLivesMatter.

Remember That Fatal Tesla Crash? Politicians Might Be Partly To Blame.

Just who is to blame for a highly publicized fatal car crash involving a self-driving Tesla Model S and a tractor-trailer in May 2016? The driver, certainly, as a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration review made clear late last month . And ― according to  a report Tuesday by NBC’s “Today” show ― perhaps foot-dragging politicians are at fault, too. Investigative reporter Ronan Farrow dug into the category of accidents known as “underride collisions,” where cars collide with semitrailers and plow underneath them with devastating results. Turns out there’s a relatively simple fix, one that has been mandatory on most trucks in Europe since 1989: installing side guards that close off access to the dangerous trailer undercarriage.  The U.S

If Trump Tweeted About Actual Dangers The Way He Tweets About Refugees

The chances of an American being killed by a refugee in a terrorist attack are slim to none. In fact, the CATO Institute puts the number at  1 in 3.64 billion . But if President Trump’s tweets were any indication … Because the ban was lifted by a judge, many very bad and dangerous people may be pouring into our country. A terrible decision — Donald J. There Is Passive Income Hiding In Your Driveway

Image Courtesy of Pied Parker With more than 38 million people living in California, a surprisingly low number of on-street public parking spaces are made available. As a result, commuters waste time and experience frustration as they endlessly search to find parking. What we don’t know, however, is that this greatly impacts ALL of us, especially homeowners. The lack of parking spots creates significant traffic in the community. A distinguished research professor in the Department of Urban Planning at UCLA, Donald Shoup, estimates that searching for parking spaces is responsible for 30 percent or more of traffic congestion in cities. This added congestion also creates about 366,000 excess vehicle miles traveled and produces 325 tons of CO2 per year
