How Brianna Wu Went From Gamergate Victim To Congressional Candidate

Last week, Brianna Wu woke up to find a rock sitting on her living room floor, surrounded by shards of glass from the window it was thrown through. Sadly, for Wu, a video game designer and Head of Development at Giant Spacekat , this is nothing new. For almost three years, Wu has been the target of malicious abuse and harassment, predominantly online. In August 2014, Wu, along with other women in the video game industry like  Anita Sarkeesian and Zoë Quinn , became a target of the Gamergate controversy , in which some of the internet’s worst trolls unintentionally exposed the misogynist underbelly of the gaming community and its hostility toward women and minorities .  Gamergate was sparked after a smear campaign, led by Quinn’s ex-boyfriend, resulted in vicious online attacks against Quinn. Wu and Sarkeesian, who were both outspoken critics of the treatment of women in video games themselves and within the gaming industry, became targets soon after.  What at first looked like disagreement about the culture of the gaming community quickly revealed itself as a thriving microcosm of misogyny and rape culture: Wu, Sarkeesian and Quinn were (and continue to be) threatened with rape and murder, stalked, doxxed, and harassed.  The women found little to no support from law enforcement.

Fox News Anchor Shepard Smith Has Simply Had It With Kellyanne Conway

Fox News anchor Shepard Smith seems to have reached his limit of White House adviser Kellyanne Conway .  Smith said Monday, “We really don’t quote Conway much anymore because, well, history,” as he reported on her explanation of “ microwaves that turn into cameras .” Conway made the widely mocked comments when asked about President Donald Trump ’s accusation that former President Barack Obama had “ wiretapped ” Trump Tower before the election.  She called microwave/cameras “a fact of modern life.” Smith was having none of it.  “Microwaves do not not turn into cameras. Fox News can now confirm microwaves heat food,” he said. “Cameras take pictures.” Conway later walked back those comments, claiming she was speaking “ about surveillance articles in news & techniques generally , not about campaign.” 2/2: response to Bergen Record was about surveillance articles in news & techniques generally, not about campaign. Dakota Access Protesters Fighting Warrant To Search Their Facebook Accounts

An investigation into a traffic pileup at a protest last month in Washington state has led to a fight over a search warrant that targets the private Facebook accounts of  Dakota Access Pipeline  critics. Attempts by Whatcom County officials to retrieve private messages, log-in history and other account information for members of the Bellingham #NoDAPL Coalition have opened up th court battle.  The American Civil Liberties Union of Washington is trying to quash the warrant on behalf of the Facebook users. The warrant is “ an overbroad and unconstitutional request for private data ,” according to an ACLU motion filed this week in Washington state Superior Court. Providing authorities with the requested data violates First Amendment freedoms of speech and association, and Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable search, the ACLU motion said.  If upheld after a hearing on Tuesday, the search warrant would affect a wide range of people who posted to the #NoDAPL coalition page from Feb. 4-15 or simply interacted on Facebook with people who “liked” the group during that period. The number of users potentially affected is easily in the hundreds.  Boston College law professor Robert Bloom told The Huffington Post that the search warrant “looks a little troubling.” The request from Whatcom County officials “needs to be specific so police can’t go rummaging around, so to speak,” he added.  The dispute over the search warrant originated with an investigation by the Whatcom County prosecutor and sheriff’s office into a protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline that blocked part of an interstate highway in Bellingham in February.  About 100 demonstrators obstructed several lanes for more than an hour, causing a 4-mile traffic jam Feb. 11, according to The Bellingham Herald

Congress Warns Donald Trump: Stop Deleting Your Tweets

WASHINGTON ― When President Donald Trump or a member of his staff deletes a tweet, they may be violating federal law, two top congressmen warned the White House this week. Reps. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) and Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), chairman and ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, sent a letter to White House counsel Don McGahn  on Wednesday expressing concerns about the Trump administration’s record keeping habits and its nontransparent use of social media and other forms of electronic communication. One example the lawmakers cited is Trump’s habit of misspelling and then deleting tweets , which they warned “could pose a violation to the Presidential Records Act ” if the deleted tweets are not archived. “Many of the messages sent from these accounts are likely to be presidential records and therefore must be preserved,” they wrote, referring to both Trump’s personal @realDonaldTrump account and his official @POTUS account.

Apple Has Already Patched Many Of The WikiLeaks Exploits

After the hubbub died down, the first of  WikiLeaks ’ much-touted “Vault 7” dumps  turns out to have revealed little about the CIA’s hacking abilities. In fact, numerous information security experts say it demonstrates quite the opposite: That instead of widespread, unchecked hacking capabilities (of the sort Edward Snowden revealed in 2013), the CIA now has to develop (and pay for) expensive exploits, then apply them to individual devices on a selective basis. Read more on that here . What’s more, the exploits it detailed were manageable enough that Apple had already patched many of them, the company told HuffPost in a statement. “While our initial analysis indicates that many of the issues leaked today were already patched in the latest iOS, we will continue work to rapidly address any identified vulnerabilities,” Apple said. The company urged users to install the latest updates, as that’s always the best way to keep devices secure.
