Harvard Scientists Say Aliens May Be Using Giant Radio Beams To Travel The Cosmos

Two Harvard University scientists are suggesting that mysterious fast radio bursts , detected in faraway galaxies, may be evidence of aliens traveling through the cosmos. FRBs are extremely bright flashes of radio waves that last for only a thousandth of a second and are detected by earthbound telescopes. Since the first one was observed 10 years ago, 17 have actually been reported, although scientists think there are thousands of them a day. At first, Abraham “Avi” Loeb said, he took a conservative approach to explaining them. “It looked like the simplest explanation would be flares from stars in the Milky Way galaxy,” said Loeb, a theoretical astrophysicist and chair of Harvard’s astronomy department.

9 Brands That Should Delete Their Account After That Tweet

Every Twitter “scandal” has a similar progression. First, a brand tweets an offensive or objectively funny thing, like McDonald’s did when its corporate Twitter published threw shade directed at President Donald Trump. Then, typically, the brands will attribute the errant tweet to a hack or a rogue employee ― and occasionally they will issue an apology. Last but not least, the rest of the internet makes fun of them or promises to boycott, and then we all move on. But some Twitter campaigns should not be forgotten, because they are very bad, and also serve as a warning to the next generation of tweeters: Stop tweeting. Delete your account.

11 Women Who Did Groundbreaking Things That Men Got The Credit For

The man who invented Monopoly did not invent Monopoly.  Charles Darrow made millions off the game that he sold to Parker Brothers ― 30 years after a woman named Elizabeth Magie created it. It’s a tale as old as time: A man took credit for a woman’s idea. We’ve seen this theme play out through history, with women’s work being erased from the labor movement, civil rights movements, and over and over again in science.  In the spirit of unearthing the “hidden figures” whose stories often go untold, we’re highlighting remarkable women who, despite their contributions, were sidelined by men. Happy Women’s History Month! This  Women’s History Month , remember that we have the power to make history every day. And in 2017, that feels more urgent than ever

Germany Considers Fining Social Media Sites For Hate Speech, Fake News

Germany is considering a crackdown on illegal social media content, including fake news stories, with threats to fine offenders up to $53 million if the lawbreaking material isn’t promptly removed. According to a law proposed Tuesday by German Justice Minister Heiko Maas, social media sites would be required to staff 24-hour helplines that would respond to user complaints flagging criminal content. The proposal could apply to hate speech, which Germany bans as criminal content, and to fake news articles if they’re slanderous, defamatory or libelous, Maas said, according to the BBC.  Anything deemed “obviously criminal” would have to be deleted or blocked within 24 hours, while less-glaring complaints would have to be resolved within seven days.  The proposal comes just one week after a Syrian refugee living in Germany lost a lawsuit against Facebook that sought the removal of a photo that wrongly identified him as a terrorist.

Hackers Attack High-Profile Twitter Accounts, Post Swastikas And Pro-Erdogan Content

Hackers gained access to many high-profile Twitter accounts on Wednesday and posted tweets in support of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Amnesty International, BBC North America, Duke University, Forbes, PBS Food, U-Haul and UNICEF USA were among the verified accounts affected by the hack. The cyberattack appeared to involve accessing the accounts and posting swastikas, comments in support of Erdogan and the hashtags  #Nazialmanya  (Nazi Germany) and #Nazihollanda (Nazi Holland). The tweets, which were written in Turkish, also included a link to a YouTube video featuring clips of Erdogan.   Amid an escalating row over Turkish officials’ access to the Netherlands.  Erdogan has suspended high-level diplomatic ties  and refused to allow the Dutch ambassador to Ankara to return to Turkey, CNN reported. According to Reuters, several of the hacked tweets mentioned the phrase “See you on April 16,” which is an apparent reference to the date of Turkey’s referendum to grant more powers to Erdogan

Thinx Controversy Proves You Can’t Sell Feminism

Up until this week,  former CEO and founder of Thinx period underwear Miki Agrawal was lauded as a “visionary” and a “badass,”  who has helped change  the way we talk about women’s health . The company’s controversial ads ― grapefruits that look like vaginas, for instance ― and “period-proof” underwear racked up  significant and largely positive  media coverage , including in  this publication . And Argrawal’s been loud about her values and the way they fit into Thinx as a brand. “I have built a business that is centered around my beliefs in gender equality,” she declared in an essay last February.  But now Argrawal seems to be bumping up against the limits of her brand of product-based feminism.
