Congressman Expertly Trolls Donald Trump With Cheat Sheet For First Big Trip Abroad

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) majestically trolled Donald Trump by tweeting him a cheat sheet for his first big trip abroad as president. As Trump jetted off for his nine-day jaunt to the Middle East and Western Europe on Friday, Lieu thought it prudent to give the president some advice to ensure he stays out of trouble while overseas. “ DON’T leak classified information ,” was his top tip. He also felt compelled to state that Israel is an ally of the U.S., and Russia is not. To: @POTUS @realDonaldTrump Here's a cheat sheet for your 1st overseas visit

Senators Demand Answers After Reporter Is ‘Manhandled’ At FCC Hearing

Senators have complained to the Federal Communications Commission after a journalist said security guards pushed him to a wall while he was covering an FCC hearing on ending  net neutrality . Sens. Tom Udall (D-N.M.) and Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) complained in a  letter to the FCC Friday that the incident appears to be part of a “pattern of hostility toward the press characteristic of this administration, which underscores our serious concern.” CQ Roll Call reporter John Donnelly was covering the hearing, brought about as part of the Trump administration’s push to end net neutrality and allow service providers to restrict access to content. Donnelly was attempting to question FCC commissioner Michael O’Reilly after a press conference on Thursday when two guards suddenly “pinned” the journalist to the wall until the commissioner had left, according to a statement from the National Press Club.  One of the guards then “proceeded to force Donnelly to leave the building entirely under implied threat of force,” the press club statement said.

Google Uses Kids To Promote Its Brand In The Classroom

I’m not writing about the Disney Channel or Nickelodeon, Marvel or Harry Potter. This blog is about how high-tech companies like Google use kids and schools to grab market shares and promote their brands and the negative consequences. On May 14, 2017, a front-page article in the New York Times reported on “How Google Took Over The USA Classroom.” According to the article, “Google, a unit of the $652 billion Alphabet, is the latest big contender in a decades-old battle among tech companies to hook students as future customers.” The report focused on one particular school in Chicago. “The sixth graders at Newton Bateman, a public elementary school here with a classic red brick facade, know the Google drill. In a social-science class last year, the students each grabbed a Google-powered laptop. They opened Google Classroom, an app where teachers make assignments

3D-Printed ‘Eyes’ Could Help Blind Children’s Faces Grow Naturally

BALTIMORE — Scientists and engineers are 3D printing all types of objects these days, including eyes: A group of eye specialists and eye-care providers from the Netherlands has used 3D-printing technology to create artificial eye structures, called conformers, in a small study of five children. The technique could help children with conditions called microphthalmia and anophthalmia, in which they are born with underdeveloped or missing eyes, respectively, the research team says. These conditions, which can occur in one or both eyes, affect more than 10 percent of blind children worldwide and as many as 30 in 100,000 children, according to previous studies. Although the sculpted eyes don’t enable the child to see, they do provide critical support of the eye socket so that the child’s face can have a natural, proportional look, the researchers said today (May 11) here at the annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), the world’s largest gathering of eye and vision researchers. “If there’s no eye present, there’s not enough adequate stimulus for the bone around the eye socket to grow,” Maayke Kuijten, a postdoctoral fellow at the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam who conducted a study on five children fitted with the conformers, said at ARVO. The 10 Weirdest Things Created by 3D Printing Because children with these conditions may have malformed eye sockets, the face and the areas around the eyes cannot expand to their natural contour, Kuijten said.

The White House: Who’s Listening In?

The president is on a tear about all things (and people) that record and perhaps some that may have been on or near his person during meetings with now former FBI director, James Comey “James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press,” a duly agitated President Trump wrote on Twitter . It wasn’t really clear whether it was the prez himself who was the bearer of the hidden microphone. Yes, it was White House high drama at a level not seen since Alexander Butterfield revealed the presence of a secret White House taping system during Nixon’s tenure in the Oval Office and the current kerfuffle captures much of the aroma that infused Francis Ford Coppola’s 1974 Hollywood thriller, The Conversation (although I doubt, that unlike the film, whomever is doing the recording will have a crisis of conscience similar to the one endured by the flic’s protagonist played perfectly by Gene Hackman). I’ve had a fascination for all things that record and chalk that up to my father’s love of “gadgets.” Despite having little money to spare – living in a walk-up tenement in Brooklyn – he’d invest in stuff like an early 1950s Webcor reel-to-reel tape recorder, periodically parking it – and me – in front of our tiny-screen black and white TV to record live opera (when the networks were imbued with a bit of high culture). I’ve fond memories of watching the recorder’s green “magic eye” pulse along with the arias of Madame Butterly; becoming so mesmerized I’d often miss the moment when the reel end of 3M tape spun wildly in finality while I scrambled to thread a new one. At NYU Film School – in James Manilla’s sound course, circa 1970 – I was introduced to a piece of technology: so beautiful, so perfect, I still get thrills just looking at it.

The Tech Giant Suing Uber Is Taking Its Technology To Lyft

Having already stabbed Uber by way of a potentially disastrous lawsuit , Waymo is now twisting the knife. The Google spinoff says it will partner with Lyft , Uber’s biggest ride-hailing rival, to help test and launch self-driving cars. Having access to this new technology would be a big coup for Lyft, as Waymo’s self-driving efforts are ― quite literally ―  miles ahead of the pack . Waymo announced last month that it plans to add 500 self-driving cars to its fleet, and the vehicles are improving as they come online. Compared to Waymo ― and Uber, which has an entire division dedicated to autonomous research ― Lyft’s efforts on self-driving vehicles are badly lagging.

Researchers See Possible North Korea Link To Global Cyber Attack

Cyber security researchers have found technical evidence they said could link North Korea with the global WannaCry “ransomware” cyber attack that has infected more than 300,000 computers in 150 countries since Friday. Symantec ( SYMC.O ) and Kaspersky Lab said on Monday that some code in an earlier version of the WannaCry software had also appeared in programs used by the Lazarus Group, which researchers from many companies have identified as a North Korea-run hacking operation. “This is the best clue we have seen to date as to the origins of WannaCry,” Kaspersky Lab researcher Kurt Baumgartner told Reuters. Both firms said it was too early to tell whether North Korea was involved in the attacks, based on the evidence that was published on Twitter by Google security researcher Neel Mehta. The attacks, which slowed on Monday, are among the fastest-spreading extortion campaigns on record. The research will be closely followed by law enforcement agencies around the world, including Washington, where President Donald Trump’s homeland security adviser said on Monday that both foreign nations and cyber criminals were possible culprits
