Two Men Fall Off A Cliff While Playing ‘Pokemon Go’ In San Diego

Two men trying to catch Pokemon instead caught some serious air after they fell off a cliff in San Diego on Wednesday, authorities said. The two pokédopes were chasing the virtual reality monsters using the “Pokemon Go” app, a smartphone game that puts an overlay on a user’s surroundings. They ignored warning signs and crossed a fence bordering the edge of a beachside cliff, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department confirmed. “They were searching for a character … and then went a little too far out on the cliff,” Sgt. Rich Eaton told The Huffington Post.

Tech Guy Celebrates Marissa Mayer For All The Wrong Reasons

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is so committed to her job that just minutes after giving birth she was back to work, a friend and Silicon Valley entrepreneur recently boasted.  “Mayer is by far the hardest working person in Silicon Valley,” Max Levchin told Pando’s Sarah Lacy . “She gave birth to twins and then traded emails with me about a feature of a product she was launching in a week, within, from what I could tell, 20 minutes of giving birth,” said the PayPal cofounder, speaking before a group of people.  The audience tittered. “She is intensely committed to her cause. She’s awesome,” said Levchin, who is now devoted mainly to a new consumer finance startup called Affirm. He also talked about how much he respects Mayer for being a pioneer and one of the few women to ascend to such a high level in tech. “She is a woman who rose through the ranks in the male-dominated world,” he said. “I think that’s pretty special.” Levchin’s comments do more than just celebrate his friend, though. Applauding such an extreme work ethic sends a pretty clear message to those interested in growing and developing their careers: Work all the time and give up everything if you want to succeed.  Every time an influential person makes a statement like Levchin’s ― celebrating someone’s obvious personal sacrifice, it sets both men and women back just a bit.

Following Sniper Attacks, Images Of Love Profess Support For Dallas

Today, citizens of Dallas are mourning the deaths of  five police officers  who were killed in an “ambush-style” attack that occurred during a Black Lives Matter protest on Thursday night. The attack has been described as the deadliest day for police  in the U.S. since Sept. 11. At least seven other police officers and two civilians were injured in the shooting, which took place just days after the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile , who were shot and killed by police.  “ Lives were lost and chaos and pain were experienced yet again during an already tragic week ,” HuffPost’s Lilly Workneh wrote earlier today.

C Level Need To Focus On Realignment And Opportunities Post Britex In Tech And Business, Not Tactical Noise

Examining the Office of National Statistics data on “How important is the European Union to UK trade and investment?” from June 2015 highlights interesting issues. It is clear that from an macro economic perspective that the current UK structures are 40 to 50% connected with the main land continent, but several out side performance growth figures points to faster markets outside the EU. Source: http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20160105160709/ http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/international-transactions/outward-foreign-affiliates-statistics/how-important-is-the-european-union-to-uk-trade-and-investment-/sty-eu It is also noticeable the amount and type of analysts commentary in the media from consultancies and industry reactions that seem to range from small micro project management issues of “maintaining digital skills and customer service” to broader statements of trade deficits and difficult times ahead. Perhaps we are still in what ever the opposite of honeymoon period we are in.

In A Twist, Kim Kardashian Gets People To Click Away From Instagram

Leave it to Kim Kardashian,  app mogul  and social media virtuoso , to ignite a traffic explosion from the last place anyone expected. A recent cover story about Kardashian in GQ generated a record number of referrals from Instagram, the magazine’s editor-in-chief, Jim Nelson, told Digiday on Tuesday . In layman’s terms: A whole lot of people found Caity Weaver’s article through the image-sharing service, and that’s kind of remarkable. “We saw 360,000 referrals coming through Instagram, a platform almost unanimously known for not generating referral traffic,” Nelson told Digiday. “For the first time, Instagram eclipsed Facebook as our top referrer for this story.” Instagram doesn’t let users click on links in comments posted under pictures, which makes it hard for businesses to leverage the platform for traffic

Weekend Roundup: Present at the Unraveling

” Present at the Creation ” was the title Dean Acheson, the famed American secretary of state from 1949-1953, gave to his memoir, which recounts the vision and construction of the post-World War II institutions of global order such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the trade-opening precursor to the World Trade Organization, and NATO that followed on the heels of the United Nations. In that same era, French diplomat Robert Schuman , considered “the father of Europe,” planted the seeds of European integration that have grown for the last several decades into a club of 28 countries with a population of 500 million. Both efforts, aimed at extinguishing the nationalism and protectionism seen as the root cause of world war, fostered the era of globalization now coming to an end. Brexit, like the Trump campaign in the U.S. and the rise of the anti-European Union right on the European continent, marks an historic turn of the tide.

Google, Airbnb, Other Tech Giants Waste Tons Of Food. This Group Rescues It

While getting free lobster, Sriracha vanilla yogurt and crab artichoke ravioli at work may boost collaboration among employees , it also generates an unwanted byproduct — plenty of food waste.  In Silicon Valley, where booming tech companies provide ample amounts of gratis grub, having hordes of perfectly edible leftovers has become the norm. Many of these companies, though, won’t send the uneaten fare to the trash. A number of them have partnered with Food Runners , a local nonprofit that picks up food from companies and distributes it to people in need. And the need in San Francisco is “tremendous,” according to L’Ann Bingham, Food Runners community relations representative. There, one in seven people struggles with hunger, according to Feeding America.  The partnership between Food Runners and area tech companies is so strong that they provide about half of the goods Food Runners retrieves, BuzzFeed reported last year. The group delivers 5,000 meals a week, Bingham told The Huffington Post.
