So THAT’S What Those ‘Ding’ Sounds During Flights Are All About

If you fly, you’re likely familiar with the  ding sound  made when the “fasten seat belt” sign turns off, signaling you’re free to move about the cabin. But discerning ears may have noticed the ding, or chime, occurs at other times during the flight , too: Sometimes it’s a single chime long before the seat belt sign turns off, and sometimes it’s a two-toned rhythm, with a high-pitched chime followed by a low one. Other times, the sound is more like a “boing.”  Of course, these noises aren’t random . Turns out they’re all part of a carrier’s secret code for its cabin crew. Take Qantas Airways , for example.  “On our  Airbus aircraft you’ll hear the ‘boing’ sound shortly after take-off ― this sound lets crew know that the landing gear is being retracted . The second boing is usually when the seat belt sign is switched off,” the airline explained in a blog post last year.  Qantas uses a single chime  to alert crew when a passenger is asking for assistance at their seat. A high-low chime combination  is the sound of the crew calling each other on their in-flight phone system

Russian Malware Operation Linked To Britney Spears’ Instagram

Oops, they did it again. Russian hackers that is, this time hiding a sophisticated malware operation in Britney Spears ’ Instagram account. A gang of Russian hackers notorious for spying on foreign governments, diplomats and military facilities has come up with a clever back-door Trojan marriage between their operation and social media — most notably Spears’ Instagram, according to Slovakian cyber-security firm ESET , which discovered the ruse. The account — hopefully — wasn’t being used to target victims. Rather, it was used as a kind of camouflaged command center for the Turla hacker system. Comments posted to the site linked to a central server that sent instructions and trafficked hacked stolen data to and from computers infected by malware

Instagram is kicking Pride month off with a colorful new initiative that aims to encourage support for queer people around the world. Recently-crowned Miss USA Kára McCullough has some powerful words for women and girls who wish to pursue a career in STEM.  In a video for Now This  posted on Wednesday, McCullough talks about how much she loves her position as emergency preparedness specialist with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission , but how it wasn’t an easy journey to get there.  “Being a woman in the science industry is truly empowering,” she says. “I walk into my agency knowing that I am meant to be here.” McCullough, who majored in chemistry in college, touches on her struggles with math and how having those struggles inspired her to push herself even harder.  Prior to being crowned Miss USA, she started a community program,  Science Exploration for Kids , to encourage young girls and boys to get enthusiastic about STEM subjects, especially those who, like her, struggle with certain aspects of it.  McCullough hopes to use her platform as Miss USA to encourage young girls to explore the STEM fields, and stay confident even if they feel out of place.  “Don’t ever give up on yourself,” she says in the video. “I struggled with math as a child but I allowed myself to not be limited by those inabilities.” Hear, hear.  type=type=RelatedArticlesblockTitle=Related… + articlesList=591b4566e4b05dd15f0bf678,59193e17e4b0fe039b35aa65,5919176de4b00f308cf6396a — This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms.
