Weekend Roundup: The Olympic Prism

The modern Olympics have become a global platform through which countries project their image to the rest of the world. They have become a prism that refracts geopolitical and geocultural realities and aspirations. The most expensive Olympics ever, the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, showcased Russia’s revival as a strong state under the guidance of President Vladimir Putin after the humiliation of losing the Cold War. As Tokyo’s new governor Yuriko Koike wrote last week in The WorldPost , she intends to use the 2020 games there to rebrand Japan as the leading edge of Asian modernization. The 2016 Summer Olympics that kicked off last weekend in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil reflect the very rich culture of a weak state with a global outlook. The opening ceremonies highlighted the planetary theme of climate change mixed in with Brazil’s trademark samba and a catwalk by its iconic model, Gisele Bundchen.

6 Companies That Are Setting the Bar in Native Advertising

According to a recent survey by eMarketer, more than 25% of Internet users use an adblocker and ad blocking is expected to cost publishers $35 billion by 2020 . To anyone (or basically every Internet user) who has ever had their browser crash from a rogue banner ad or seen a mobile advertisement so big they couldn’t close it, it’s no surprise that the demand for ad blocking tools is so attractive. While publishers are frantically trying to reinvent their revenue models that have been so heavily powered by impression or click-based advertising, advertisers are also scrambling to find a new way to reach their target audiences. A popular solution that seems to satisfy all stakeholders (publishers, advertisers and consumers) is sponsored content. Everything, from boring text to viral content, falls under the umbrella of sponsored content. Here are six examples of companies that are consistently raising the bar on what can be considered the ideal form of sponsored content.

Facebook, Flexing Its Muscle, Announces Plans To Combat Clickbait

Facebook, tired of headlines promising “shocking” things you “won’t believe,” is fed up with clickbait and will soon implement changes to its algorithm that’ll remove such stories from your newsfeed. In a blog post  Thursday the social media network with more than 1.7 billion monthly users said it would institute a new system to show people “the stories most relevant to them” in an effort to shift away from “misleading and spammy” headlines. “We’ve heard from people that they specifically want to see fewer stories with clickbait headlines or link titles,” reads the post, written by Facebook’s Alex Peysakhovich and Kristin Henrix. “These are headlines that intentionally leave out crucial information, or mislead people, forcing people to click to find out the answer.” The shift in Facebook’s News Feed will target two types of headline: those that withhold information that necessitates users clicking through to an external website   and those that exaggerate and mislead to heighten expectations.

Strangers Play Pokemon Go With Teen With Autism After He Was Called The R-Word

This teen got some serious experience points in human kindness. Dozens of strangers turned up to play Pokemon Go with a 15-year-old who lives with autism after they found out he was bullied while playing the popular augmented reality game. On July 28, Ty and his mother, Angie Swartout, were playing Pokemon Go at Tempe Beach Park in Arizona when they were approached by two men, who appeared to be students at Arizona State University, according to a post Ty’s sister wrote on Facebook . The two men then stomped on a bottle of barbecue sauce and squirted it all over Ty and Swartout. “And I just stood there, and then I heard them laugh and say ‘Yeah, we got the r-word,’”  Swartout told ABC15

No, You Can’t Hatch Pokemon Go Eggs Faster Using A Vibrator

As the Pokemon Go craze completes its first month of existence, players are looking for any way to get an edge. One method that’s getting a buzz in Japan is attaching a vibrator to the phone to make it think the user is walking when they’re really just sitting around watching a buzzing vibrator they’ve attached to their phone. This is supposed to make Pokemon Go eggs hatch faster, according to RocketNews24.com, which hooked up a vibrator to a smartphone to see if it really worked. Does it? The results can only be described as, “Meh.” The researchers said the vibrator tricked the game into thinking the player had walked 400 meters in 10 minutes. Sounds good until you consider that the average human can walk 800 meters in 10 minutes.  RocketNews24.com did its test with only one kind of vibe: a Daito Thrive Handy Massager. Tom Nardone, who owns Vibrators.com, wanted to see if other vibrators might provide better results. So he attached three kinds of vibes to phones playing Pokemon Go: a traditional fast-buzzing vibe called “The Romance”; the “Gyrator,” which vibrates hard and slower; and the “Stroker,” which goes slow.
