Yahoo In Jeopardy, Facebook Restates Numbers. Hacking TV

Hacking TV #0059 Dreams and disappointments aplenty on this week’s Hacking TV. Starting with cruel reality, Yahoo had to confess that it was the victim of the biggest identity hack in history two years ago, but it only found out right when it was trying to sell itself to Verizon. Meanwhile the egos of the video publishers on Facebook took a hit last week, when they found out the company overstated the time people spent watching their video… by 200 percent.

Future of AI – Demonetization

As a follow-up to my writings on Artificial Intelligence, my friend Som Das sent me an article by Peter Diamandis on  demonetization and the “abundance” that will be created with the help of technology . People are concerned about how AI and robotics are taking jobs and destroying livelihoods… reducing our earning capacity, and subsequently destroying the economy. In anticipation, countries like Canada, India and Finland are running experiments to pilot the idea of “universal basic income” – the unconditional provision of a regular sum of money from the government to support livelihood independent of employment. But what people aren’t talking about, and what’s getting my attention, is a forthcoming rapid  demonetization  of the cost of living.

When Things Trend Wrong

It was interesting to have an Indian film industry icon, Kareena Kapoor Khan, pop up on my news feed, but the reason she popped up surprised me. Kareena Kapoor Khan started trending on my news feed two days ago, after she was seen “eating with friends”. The exact dialogue that Facebook used was the following: “Kareena Kapoor Khan is having a ball of a time nowadars. Yesterday, Bebo partied with her best friends Amrita Arora, Malaika Arora and Natasha Poonwala. Recommended: ‘Saif says I have been eating too much,’ reveals expecting mom Kareena!” What comes highly unacknowledged with Kareena Kapoor Khan and this particular headline is that in an age where India is repeatedly under fire for gendercide, sexist behavior, and archaic cultural resolutions regarding women’s rights, Kareena at a minimal level is trying to alter India’s perception. Her efforts aren’t making astronomical waves but she should have been trending instead for her attempts to lend a voice and promote gender equality with her speech at the Global Citizen India launch event in Mumbai.

YouTube’s Enthusiastic Ad-Friendly Policy Upsets Content Producers

A few days ago a hashtag trending on Twitter – #YouTubeIsOverParty – had over 100,000 tweets. Along with this, many of the top YouTuber stars were making videos with a similar name. YouTube personality Philip DeFranco for example created a firestorm when he announced that the platform was shutting down his channel due to controversial content. So what the hell was going on!? The online star, who has more than 4.6 million subscribers on the service, said that he was notified that YouTube was removing ads on some of his videos because it was not “advertiser-friendly,” and contained “graphic content or excessive strong language.” In total, DeFranco noticed 12 of his videos did not have ads.

Facebook Created A Very Cheery Slideshow Of This Man’s Car Crash

Josh Gibson was traveling down University Parkway in Orem, Utah , in his green Toyota 4Runner when another car rear-ended him, causing Gibson to lose control and flip his truck. The sunroof shattered and his truck slid on its roof. “I was mostly hanging from my seatbelt,” Gibson recalled in a Reddit comment, “but had to also hold my left elbow down against the sliding concrete to prevent my head from sliding.” When the vehicle finally came to a halt, Gibson made sure he wasn’t seriously injured and crawled out. “My legs were shaking pretty uncontrollably for a while as I walked around cracking stupid jokes with the firefighters and highway patrol officers.” Everyone involved was shocked but ultimately OK. So, surely this isn’t an experience Gibson looks back on fondly, right? Well, as a nice reminder, Facebook auto-created a bubbly slideshow using the photos and video Gibson took of the accident. He was kind enough to share the slideshow, and his recollection, with everyone on Reddit

Oliver Stone: Snowden Is A Patriot Who Wants To Come Home

The famed director of “JFK” and “Wall Street” talks about his new film, “Snowden,” about Edward Snowden the man, the totalitarian character of “surveillance capitalism” and Russian President Vladimir Putin. You portray Edward Snowden in your film not as a traitor, but as an information age patriot defending American citizens from their own intelligence agencies. At one point in the film, Snowden and his colleagues are shocked to learn that the incidence of surveillance on Americans was greater than on America’s adversaries, the Chinese and Russians. Since the Snowden revelations, security laws have been revamped to curb a broad collection of metadata on U.S. citizens. Do you see these as sufficient safeguards on civil liberties, or weak rules easily rolled back if there is another major terror attack ― or if Donald Trump wins the presidency

Weekend Roundup: China’s Slump Tests Brazil’s Democracy

What global interdependence giveth it can also take away. As long as China’s economy grew rapidly, as it did over recent decades, the demand for Brazil’s iron ore, oil and soybeans generated enough rising prosperity to disguise the cracks in the democratic system of Latin America’s largest country. China’s slump has now exposed the malignant corruption and mismanagement that festered in the shadows of the ” Brazilian miracle, ” sending the nation into a downward spiral of deep recession, high inflation and burdensome debt. Social unrest and massive demonstrations have regularly filled the streets, culminating in the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff. Animated chart representing China and Brazil’s economic relationship. (Getty) Writing from Sao Paulo, Brazil’s revered former president, Fernando Henrique Cardoso says, “Brazil has turned a sad page in its history.
