If You Have One Of These Toys In Your House, You May Want To Stop Using It

Sloppy data security practices at a toy company that sells a line of internet-connected stuffed animals has exposed the personal information of more than 800,000 customers, and some 2 million voice recordings ― many of them from children. The toy animals, manufactured by CloudPets , have the ability to store and replay voice messages sent to them via the internet. Ideally, that means traveling parents ― for instance, a deployed military member ― could send a heartfelt message to their child’s teddy bear at home, to be replayed when their child interacts with the bear: But since at least Christmas Day of last year, information on the CloudPets server ― including customers’ login and password information and voice recordings ― was stored in an exposed database easily accessible to anyone on the internet who knew where to look. Online security expert Troy Hunt is one of the first to have noticed the issue . He and several others attempted to alert CloudPets to the security oversight numerous times, yet never heard back.

People Who Live Without Screens Don’t Sleep Any Better Than The Rest Of Us

Sleep experts are quick to blame bright street lights, TVs and the ever-distracting smartphone as the reasons why nearly one-third of U.S. adults don’t clock enough sleep  on a regular basis. (For good reason ― some types of light can seriously mess with the body’s ability to wind down before sleep .) But a new study published in the journal Human Biology this month suggests that even without distractions from artificial light sources and other modern technology, human sleep patterns can  still  be far from ideal. A group of researchers, most of them from Duke University, tracked the sleep patterns of people living in a Madagascar farming village without electricity and few other sources of artificial light. The data showed the villagers  slept less than a similarly sized group of people of the same ages in the U.S. and another similar group in Italy

YouTube Is Getting Into The Live TV Game

Good news for cord cutters, YouTube is getting into live TV. On Tuesday, the company announced its launching a new live and on-demand internet TV streaming service called YouTube TV. Subscribers will have access to more than 30 networks, including ABC, CBS FOX, NBC, USA, FX and 10 sports networks, including ESPN, Fox Sports and NBCSN for $35 per month, in addition to paid YouTube content from YouTube Red. That price also includes six accounts, which allows for personalized recommendations for each member of the household, though only three accounts can stream at one time.  Notably absent from YouTube’s service are Viacom-owned channels Discovery, A&E, AMC, TBS, TNT, MTV, Comedy Central and CNN.  While no specific launch date has been announced as of yet, YouTube TV joins the growing space of internet TV streaming services as more people look for ways to say goodbye to traditional cable. In addition to the more established Sling TV and Sony’s Playstation Vue , AT&T recently launched a similar service with DirecTVNow , though it seems to have been launched prematurely.

NASA scientists caused a stir when they announced the discovery of seven previously unknown Earth-sized planets on Wednesday. Google Doodle Celebrates Planetary Discovery In The Most Adorable Way

View post on imgur.com Google is celebrating this week’s planetary discovery with a home page doodle that’s out of this world. In an adorable cartoon, Earth is seen peering out into space with a telescope as the moon ― a.k.a. “Earth’s little buddy,” as Canadian  astronaut Chris Hadfield described it ― watches from behind. That’s when Earth comes across one lone exoplanet smiling back at it, leading to an ambush of six other cosmic characters. One even waves back.  The colorful doodle, which was crafted by Nate Swinehart , graced the home page one day after NASA announced the discovery of seven exoplanets some 40 light-years away, part of what scientists have named the TRAPPIST-1 system ― after the TRAPPIST telescope that found them.

Donald Trump Promised To Build Infrastructure, Delays Bay Area Railway Project Instead

Donald Trump promised Americans he would rebuild the country’s crumbling infrastructure , boasting on the campaign trail that he would put $1 trillion of public and private funds into rebuilding roads and bridges. He later drastically decreased that number to $550 billion . So where is that money going? Not to California, where plans to revitalize the Bay Area’s Caltrain transit system have just been delayed by his administration. Trump’s newly appointed transportation secretary, Elaine Chao ― who oversees the Federal Transit Administration ― has slammed the brakes on the project, which would change the diesel-powered trains to electric  and cost about $2 billion, according to SF Gate.  Last Friday, Chao halted the $647 million federal grant that helps cover the project until an audit can be completed .

Facebook Donates Some $100,000 To CPAC, Reminding Users Again That It’s Not Liberal

Facebook and the Conservative Political Action Conference are in a relationship. It’s complicated. A Facebook spokesperson confirmed to HuffPost Wednesday that it is helping to underwrite the prominent conservative gathering next week in Washington. This isn’t the social network’s first year at CPAC. But the 2017 event follows an election year in which Facebook drew fire from the right and the left over the role its vast platform plays in politics. This year CPAC offers panels  like “If Heaven Has a Gate, A Wall, and Extreme Vetting, Why Can’t America?” and “Armed and Fabulous: The New Normal.” And it was all set to give a speaking slot to Milo Yiannopoulos and his racist, sexist and transphobic views before the far-right provocateur appeared to condone sex with 13-year-olds.

#DeleteUber Is Back, Thanks To Former Employee’s Description Of Sexual Harassment

Uber probably wishes it could just be done with #DeleteUber already ― but the ride-hailing company can’t seem to put the protest in the rearview mirror. The movement is seeing a revival thanks to a blog published by former Uber engineer Susan Fowler  Sunday, in which she recalls her decision to leave the startup due to what she says was a nightmarish, sexist work environment. Among other things, Fowler says that her manager sent her inappropriate sexual messages ― and that the institutional response was wildly disappointing. “When I reported the situation,” she writes, “I was told by both HR and upper management that even though this was clearly sexual harassment and he was propositioning me, it was this man’s first offense, and that they wouldn’t feel comfortable giving him anything other than a warning and a stern talking-to.” In response to what Fowler calls her “ strange, fascinating, and slightly horrifying story ,” people on Twitter dusted off the hashtag and once again called for users to delete Uber in protest: I should have done this a while back but it's definitely well past time to #deleteuber https://t.co/lZavepr6AX pic.twitter.com/hh4fzfHjlE — Leigh Honeywell (@hypatiadotca) February 19, 2017 Goodbye forever @Uber .
