How Tech Overlooks Women Leaders

In a highly competitive marketplace in a fast-moving industry, only companies that create a business climate where talented workers can succeed will thrive. So why is the gap so wide between making the business case for unleashing women’s potential at the highest levels of high tech and actually making it happen? While STEM programs can help, it’s the culture awaiting women if and when they enter the industry that has to change. From an industry low of 12.5% nationally and 17% globally, which is Microsoft’s metric on female employment, to 23%, the high at Facebook and Yahoo, relatively few women make it from the cubicle to the C Suite. That’s not because women aren’t interested – 30 years ago, 37% of college students earning undergraduate degrees in computer science were women. The rate is 18% today, a decline that coincided with the hackers, nerds and start-ups that established the “Go Bro!” Silicon Valley ethos and rode it to its first big peak in the 90’s.

Amazon Removes Offensive Hindu Deities Doormats After Twitter Outcry

Amazon got serious heat from users after some very questionable items were being sold on the site. The hashtag #BoycottAmazon was trending on Twitter in India on Saturday, when users discovered doormats with images of Hindu gods and goddesses on the platform. Amazon has since removed the doormats in question, according to Mashable. People were upset at the retail giant for allowing the sale of items that place sacred symbols — including images of the deities Shiva, Vishnu, Krishna and Ganesha — on doormats, or that thing you use to wipe your dirty feet. Tweeters were calling the products an insult to Hinduism and an abuse of the deities: #BoycottAmazon @amazon @AmazonHelp STOP abusing Hindu Deities Enough is Enough REMOVE these products pic.twitter.com/qCm4NOZnFb — No Conversion (@noconversion) June 5, 2016 Very shocking to c @amazon openly insulting Hinduism.Time to teach them a big lesson

Instagram Introduces New Tools for Business Users

Good news for businesses: Instagram has officially announced the launch of new tools, including new business pages and Insights, its analytics offering. The update, which will be rolled out first in the USA, Australia and New Zealand, will be available everywhere by the end of the year. The new tools should be particularly welcome for Instagram’s small business users. Though big brands have been advertising on the platform for some time, there hasn’t been a dedicated experience for smaller organisations, which make up the “vast majority” of Instagram’s business users, according to Jim Squires, Instagram’s director of market operations. According to t he Financial Times , almost 60% of Instagram’s 400 million monthly active users have learnt about new products and services through the platform.

Weekend Roundup: Being Is Not an Algorithm

Recently, The WorldPost published an interview with “Sapiens” author Yuval Harari in which he envisioned a future where “organisms become algorithms” as computer and biological sciences converge. In a response, Deepak Chopra writes this week that being cannot be reduced to an algorithm, nor can the mind be reduced to the wiring of the brain which artificial intelligence strives to mimic. “Of all the weird contradictions that plague modern life,” Chopra says, “the strangest is the collapse of philosophy with the triumph of science. Aesthetics, morals, love, transcendence, idealism — all of these fields of thought, having persisted for thousands of years, in the East and in the West, mean nothing in scientific terms because they cannot be reduced to data, measurements and experimentation.” “What we need,” he concludes, “is a wholesale commitment to a meaningful life, placing our best hopes there, not in logic machines and their parody of having a mind.” In a related reflection, I explore how advances on the frontiers of science, especially our godlike capacity to read and write the genetic code, are paradoxically resurrecting the religious imagination by raising anew all the foundational questions of human origins and destiny. “Science has no knowledge of being,” I write by way of introducing several thinkers who have meditated deeply on the subject, “It can only report that we are a collection of cells

The Video Content Stack: How To Scale Video Production

To keep pace with surging demand for online video, publishers, agencies, and brands will need to build and embrace the video content stack Software may be eating the world, but video is feasting on the attention of today’s consumers. Snapchat recently announced it generates 10 billion video views per day , growing by two billion in as many months. According to Cisco’s Visual Networking Index , online video consumption will grow by more than 300 percent over the next four years. Which means that by 2020, video will account for 80 to 90 percent of all online traffic. What this means for publishers, agencies, and brands of all sizes is that production of video content must either keep pace with consumer demand or else risk becoming irrelevant and ultimately invisible.

Cheeky Video Explains The Entire Universe In Just Over 4 Minutes

Need some help in understanding the universe?  Then check out this entertaining — and slightly risqué — video by British YouTuber Exurb1a , who does his best to break it all down in just over four minutes. Exurb1a ‘s  humorous whistle-stop explainer begins with The Planck Length , before moving on to cover neutrinos, quarks and atoms, the periodic table and DNA.  He then focuses on the bigger stuff, such as the Solar System and black holes. However, as the 26-year-old notes, “Nothing means anything and we’re all going to die.” He has a point. Exurb1a , a philosophy PhD student who currently lives in eastern Europe, does go off-piste during the video.  There’s a dig at an ex-girlfriend, and he pokes fun at several celebrities. But that hasn’t stopped the clip, which he posted to YouTube on May 23, from going viral. Many viewers have likened it to Bill Wurtz’s similarly quirky 9-minute history of Japan . “I created the video after having the idea while I was out running, being certain that someone had done something similar,” Exurb1a, who plans on making more explainers , said via email.
