In The Future, Your Thoughts May Become Tweets

Imagine it: In some not-so-distant future, instead of clicking a few buttons to push out your 140-character thought on Twitter, you can just think it up, and bam! There it will be!  It’s not impossible, according to a pair of gleeful technological futurists in “ Lo and Behold, Reveries of the Connected World .” Werner Herzog’s documentary, which opens Friday, offers 10 conflicting perspectives on the pros and cons of the internet. The Huffington Post and its parent company, AOL, have a joint exclusive clip that outlines how much more linked to the World Wide Web we might become. Weekend Roundup: What the Burkini Ban Reveals

In the wake of the terrorist attacks in Nice and elsewhere in the country, several towns along the sunny beaches in the south of France where a scantily clad Brigitte Bardot once frolicked have banned the burkini. This ban on covering up reveals not only a cleavage between conservative Islamic norms and the liberal West, but between the concepts of secularism within the West itself as well. Notably, sympathy with the ban has united the otherwise querulous left and right in France. The Socialist Prime Minister Manuel Valls says he sees behind fashion concepts like the burkini, “the idea that by their nature women are immodest, impure, that they should therefore be completely covered.

Chinese-Built Infrastructure In Africa May Not Be As Bad As Some Think

China is building  more infrastructure in Africa than any other country. Chinese banks are financing billions of dollars in new loans , aid packages and other deals to build badly-needed infrastructure across the continent, and it’s Chinese companies that are doing most of the engineering and construction work. Between 2009 and 2014, the Chinese signed approximately $328 billion in construction projects in Africa, an average of about $54 billion a year, according to data from the international law firm Baker & McKenzie . This trend is widely expected to continue as Beijing turns to its new development bank, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank , to focus more of its economic diplomacy around the world on building infrastructure. Even though the Chinese are making an enormous contribution to Africa’s infrastructure development, there is still a pervasive misperception that Chinese-built roads, bridges and other construction projects are of poor quality.

Dude Takes The Trippiest Picture After He Sees His Phone Background IRL

Sometimes, life can be as pretty as a picture. Literally.  Jarrod Robertson from Birmingham, Alabama, was at the top of a ski lift in the Italian municipality of  Kastelruth  when he realized the view before him miraculously matched the phone background he’d had for two years.  Robertson recently shared his story on Reddit along with a picture of himself holding his phone against the IRL Dolomites mountain range landscape. Social media users were understandably impressed.   After having it for 2 years, I accidentally FOUND my phone background the other day near santa cristina, italy! Trippy, right?  The Redditor, who lived in Italy for about 6 months, told The Huffington Post that before moving there, he searched for picturesque mountain towns to visit, found a pic featuring a gorgeous view and made it his phone background before trekking out to see it in all its glory.  He knew the mountain range featured in the photo and that the picture was taken somewhere around the Seiser Alm area in Northern Italy, but didn’t have much information beyond that. Still, he set out to find not only the mountain but the exact view in the shot.  His first attempt was unsuccessful. Instead, he discovered the municipality  of Santa Cristina Gherdëina,  where he ended up taking his family months later

City Planner’s Scathing Resignation Letter Perfectly Nails Silicon Valley Housing Crisis

This is how bad the housing crisis  has gotten in Silicon Valley: A lawyer who lives in Palo Alto, California, and advises the city on housing can no longer afford to live there. Citing Palo Alto’s “astronomical” housing costs, attorney Kate Downing explained in a public letter this week why she’s resigning from her position on the city’s Planning and Transportation Commission . Downing, who works for a tech company, has been fighting for affordable housing as a founding member of the citizens group Palo Alto Forward . She says that she and her husband, a software engineer, rent a home with another couple for $6,200 a month but are now moving to Santa Cruz. “It’s clear that if professionals like me cannot raise a family here, then all of our teachers, first responders, and service workers are in dire straits,” Downing wrote in the letter, which was addressed to city council members and residents. “We already see openings at our police department that we can’t fill and numerous teacher contracts that we can’t renew because the cost of housing is astronomical not just in Palo Alto but many miles in each direction.”   We should take care to remember that Palo Alto is famous the world over for its residents’ accomplishments, but none of those people would be able to live in Palo Alto were they starting out today.

6 Companies That Are Setting the Bar in Native Advertising

According to a recent survey by eMarketer, more than 25% of Internet users use an adblocker and ad blocking is expected to cost publishers $35 billion by 2020 . To anyone (or basically every Internet user) who has ever had their browser crash from a rogue banner ad or seen a mobile advertisement so big they couldn’t close it, it’s no surprise that the demand for ad blocking tools is so attractive. While publishers are frantically trying to reinvent their revenue models that have been so heavily powered by impression or click-based advertising, advertisers are also scrambling to find a new way to reach their target audiences. A popular solution that seems to satisfy all stakeholders (publishers, advertisers and consumers) is sponsored content. Everything, from boring text to viral content, falls under the umbrella of sponsored content. Here are six examples of companies that are consistently raising the bar on what can be considered the ideal form of sponsored content.
