Elon Musk Just Launched A New Startup

Does Elon Musk ever sleep? Probably. But whatever the amount, it’s likely diminished even more now, as the serial entrepreneur ― already busy with Tesla, SpaceX and Solar City, not to mention  The Boring Company  and Hyperloop ― has launched another company. His newest venture, called Neuralink, will research how to connect the human brain and computers by way of tiny, implanted electrodes. Max Hodak, a company insider at Neuralink, confirmed the news to the Wall Street Journal Monday, describing the state of the startup as “embryonic.” While Neuralink may be brand new, the concept it hopes to capitalize on is not. Musk spoke publicly about the idea at Recode’s 2016 Code Conference , describing a need for some sort of “neural lace” to enable direct human/computer interfacing.

Don’t Blame The Batteries For Every Lithium-Ion Explosion

By Tim Moynihan for WIRED . Lithium-ion batteries have been making headlines for all the wrong reasons. The latest marquee moment involved a pair of exploding headphones on a plane. That incendiary incident came hot on the heels of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 (double) recall and major issues with “hoverboard” batteries. You can’t chalk it all up to incompetence, either

Donald Trump Signs Bill Authorizing NASA Budget, Mars Exploration

President Donald Trump signed a bill into law on Tuesday that authorizes $19.5 billion in NASA funding for the 2018 budget year and adds human exploration of Mars as an agency objective, The Associated Press  reports. Trump signed the NASA Transition Authorization Act as astronauts and the bill’s sponsors, including Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), looked on. The new law allows NASA to redouble its deep space exploration efforts and develop a manned mission to Mars.  The Trump administration released a preliminary budget last week  that proposed a $19.1 billion budget for the space agency next year, down $200 million from the current budget of $19.3 billion. However, Tuesday’s bill reversed course, boosting NASA’s budget to $19.5 billion for the 2018 fiscal year, which begins October 1

11 Women Who Did Groundbreaking Things That Men Got The Credit For

The man who invented Monopoly did not invent Monopoly.  Charles Darrow made millions off the game that he sold to Parker Brothers ― 30 years after a woman named Elizabeth Magie created it. It’s a tale as old as time: A man took credit for a woman’s idea. We’ve seen this theme play out through history, with women’s work being erased from the labor movement, civil rights movements, and over and over again in science.  In the spirit of unearthing the “hidden figures” whose stories often go untold, we’re highlighting remarkable women who, despite their contributions, were sidelined by men. Happy Women’s History Month! This  Women’s History Month , remember that we have the power to make history every day. And in 2017, that feels more urgent than ever

Thinx Controversy Proves You Can’t Sell Feminism

Up until this week,  former CEO and founder of Thinx period underwear Miki Agrawal was lauded as a “visionary” and a “badass,”  who has helped change  the way we talk about women’s health . The company’s controversial ads ― grapefruits that look like vaginas, for instance ― and “period-proof” underwear racked up  significant and largely positive  media coverage , including in  this publication . And Argrawal’s been loud about her values and the way they fit into Thinx as a brand. “I have built a business that is centered around my beliefs in gender equality,” she declared in an essay last February.  But now Argrawal seems to be bumping up against the limits of her brand of product-based feminism.

Airbus’ Driving/Flying Pod Concept Has Us Dreaming Traffic Is Over

Traffic could be a thing of the past if this  new concept design  from Airbus ever comes to fruition. The Pop.Up is the aircraft company’s epic idea for a hybrid driving and flying machine that would serve commuters in a transportation network. Its detachable capsule  connects to either a four-wheeled driving base or a set of high-tech wings, depending on road conditions. Simply plug your destination into the capsule’s app , wait for it to arrive, and let it drive or fly you from Point A to B.  Airbus and design brand  Italdesign  unveiled a non-working prototype  of Pop.Up this week at the Geneva Motor Show. The vehicle, which theoretically drives or pilots itself with zero emissions, is meant to benefit both travelers and the environment.  “Urban transportation is moving into the third dimension , exploring city skies to contribute to relieving congested roads and reducing emissions,” Airbus said in a press release, adding their vehicle “makes full use of both ground and airspace.” There isn’t a timeline for when or if these pods become a reality, and Engadget notes “any practical use is going to be years away .” We’ll keep muddling through freeway traffic , but we won’t stop dreaming.  — This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms.
