Facebook Knows When Teens Feel ‘Worthless,’ Swears It Doesn’t Use That To Sell Ads

Facebook sees all ― including teenagers’ feelings of inadequacy. That’s according to a confidential report a Facebook employee  leaked to The Australian  about a project at Facebook Australia that identifies insecure young people and strategizes how advertisers might target them. According to the Australian, the report says Facebook can pinpoint “moments when young people need a confidence boost” or feel “worthless,” as well as employ image-recognition software to glean uncomfortable insights about users from the photos they post on Facebook and Instagram, which Facebook owns. The Australian says Facebook is drawing its insights from a database of 6.4 million young people in Australia and New Zealand, ranging from high school students to young workers with an average age of 26. It’s unclear if Facebook has conducted similar research elsewhere

Facebook Says It Will Ramp Up Fight Against Propaganda

Facebook Inc acknowledged on Thursday that it has become a battleground for governments seeking to manipulate public opinion in other countries and outlined new measures it is taking to combat what it calls “information operations” that go well beyond the phenomenon known as fake news. In a report and summary of response plans on its website on Thursday, Facebook describes well-funded and subtle efforts by nations and other organizations to spread misleading information and falsehoods for geopolitical goals. These initiatives go much further than posting fake news stories to include amplification – essentially widening the circulation of posts through a variety of means – carried out by government employees or paid professionals, often using fake accounts. Reuters reviewed an advance copy of the 13-page report, which was written by two veteran security analysts who joined Facebook from cyber security firms FireEye Inc and Dell SecureWorks, along with Facebook’s chief security officer.

This Teen Dancer Went Viral For Her Body Image. Now Comes The Aftermath.

NEW YORK ― It was a late January evening, and Lizzy Howell’s iPhone would not stop buzzing. The 15-year-old from Milford, Delaware, watched in bewilderment as notification after notification flashed on her screen until her battery died. Quite by accident, a video she’d posted of herself on Instagram a few months before had gone viral. In the 10-second clip, Lizzy, wearing a maroon leotard and footless tights, is spinning on her toes, practicing a classical ballet move called fouetté turns . Eleven times she twirls, gracefully extending her leg and whipping it around. Behind her, several young dancers watch in appreciation.

‘The Circle’ Is A Messy Adaptation And A Feeble Addition To The Cyber-Panic Genre

“ The Circle ” commits a terrible movie crime: It botches its own premise, coming up hollow and spineless.  There’s no use trying to be more measured. The big-screen adaptation of Dave Eggers’ best-selling 2013 novel about a surveillance-happy internet corporation betrays stories that tackle techno-panic in our increasingly digital world. Eggers’ book is a pulpy page-turner that updates elements of  1984  and Brave New World , even if its execution isn’t as immersive or clever. In movie form, almost everything gets lost in translation. The tone isn’t alarming enough to be a thriller, nor is it witty enough to be a satire, offering no effective commentary about the breadth of our electronic footprints. No movie should be required to preach a message, but what’s the point in depicting the ills of technology without offering a point of view

Trump’s Wall Is Worthless If He Doesn’t Back It Up With Tech

By Issie Lapowsky and Lily Hay Newman for WIRED . If Congress were to fail to pass a spending bill before the end of the day Friday, the government could shut down. That’s why President Trump just blinked. He shelved a plan to demand that funding for a border wall be included in that bill after both Democrats and Republicans voiced fierce opposition. President Trump seemed intent on avoiding the humiliation of seeing his plan for a “big, beautiful wall” shut down along with the government, particularly when his own party controls Congress

For the second time in roughly a week, a brutal killing has been uploaded to Facebook. Drunk Man Arrested For Tackling Parking Lot Security Robot

The battle for the future of humanity escalated last week, thanks to a drunk man who tackled a security robot in a Silicon Valley parking lot. Next stop: “The Matrix,” if we’re lucky. Otherwise? Probably “The Terminator.” Jason Sylvain, 41, attacked the crime-fighting K5 droid in the parking lot of robot manufacturer  Knightscope  the evening of April 19, Mountain View Police Department spokeswoman Katie Nelson told HuffPost. She said an employee for Knightscope detained Sylvain before officers got to the scene. “When we arrived, we met with Sylvain, and as we were speaking with him, he appeared confused, had red, glassy eyes and a strong odor of alcohol emitted from him,” Nelson said.
