Here’s What’s Really Going On With Mark Zuckerberg’s Hawaiian Land Battle

HONOLULU ― Facebook founder  Mark Zuckerberg is making a lot of noise on the quiet Hawaiian island of Kauai after word got out that lawsuits he filed last month to secure his beachfront estate could force Hawaii residents to sell their inherited land.  Zuckerberg’s 700-acre property, which the billionaire purchased for more than $100 million in 2014, contains almost a dozen smaller parcels known as “kuleana” lands,  according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Local families hold rights to these lands under The Kuleana Act of 1850 and can legally enter Zuckerberg’s estate to reach their parcels. To keep his new property private, three of Zuckerberg’s Hawaii-based companies filed eight lawsuits, called “quiet title and partition” actions, on Dec. 30 against hundreds of people , living and dead, who have partial rights to kuleana lands on the estate, according to court records. A quiet title claim is a common way of establishing real estate ownership, and ultimately may lead to a judge ordering the land sold at auction, the Star-Advertiser reported

Big Changes On White House Website As Donald Trump Takes Over

WASHINGTON ― With a new president comes a new presidential website . Gone are sections like “Civil Rights” and “Reducing Gun Violence” and in are pages like “America First Energy Plan” and “America First Foreign Policy.” But people also quickly noticed that certain pages seemed to have disappeared altogether. Searches for LGBT turn up nothing and the section on climate change goes to a broken link.  Advocacy groups for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality quickly condemned the Trump administration for scrubbing mentions of their community. There is a good chance that Trump’s WhiteHouse.gov will not have a specific section on LGBTQ rights.

Barack Obama Tweets As A Private Citizen For First Time

The office of the president has changed hands, and so has the official @POTUS Twitter account. After Barack Obama handed the country and the Twitter handle over to Donald Trump , the outgoing president wasted little time in tweeting from his private Twitter account, which had been basically only used to retweet from the POTUS account since Jan. 19, 2009. Obama may have worried his old account was a little rusty.

Fujifilm Announces the Fuji GFX, X-T20, and X100F

Fujifilm is having a crazy awesome day today and has released 3 new cameras and a host of new lenses in to the wild. The newly released Fuji X-T2 which I recently reviewed was my favorite new camera of 2016 and many of those features have worked their way into these new mirrorless cameras. So let’s have a look at some of the new gear from one of my new favorite camera brands. Preorder: Fujifilm GFX: B&H Photo | Adorama Fujifilm X100F: B&H Photo | Adorama Fujifilm X-T20: B&H Photo | Adorama Fujifilm GFX 50S The Fuji GFX is a medium format monster with 51.4MP, a 3.2″ touchscreen, and a 117pt contrast detection AF system. Compared to Hasselblad’s X1D , the Fuji is significantly larger (although still fairly light for it’s size) but as a result of the mirrorless design, it remains smaller than other medium format cameras.

A Dashboard For The Earth

Deep learning neural net technologies / ExtremeTech If we want our planet to be able to house 10 billion people and also want to preserve biodiversity in the future, then we need to leverage the new technologies associated with “big data” and artificial intelligence. Using these sets of new technologies, we can create a dashboard for the planet, with up-to-the-minute data on ecosystem functions continuously feeding in. We can create a unified system that “interrogates the environmental condition of the Earth,” said Microsoft scientist Lucas Joppa at a conference organized by the Renewable Natural Resources Foundation (RNRF ) in Washington, D.C. Unfortunately, today we are nowhere near this “Bloomberg terminal” for the planet. Discussions throughout the conference were a strange mix of extreme optimism about the capacity of technology to solve our problems and deep concern for the state of the global environment. While Joppa seemed pessimistic about the climate and health of our ecosystems, he lauded the potential of new technologies to be applied to ecological conservation and restoration.
