Pacific nations lose shortwave radio services that evade dictators and warn of natural disasters

US Geological Survey Alexandra Wake , RMIT University As a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of the Solomon Islands, triggering a tsunami warning across the Pacific, many residents of the tiny country would have turned to shortwave radio for more information. The tsunami warning has since been called off, though assessments of damage from the quake are not yet complete. Sadly, this vital communication service is under threat in this already under-resourced region. AAP/United States Geological Survey For almost 80 years, Australia has provided such shortwave services, including vital emergency service information, to Asia and the Pacific. But government funding cuts saw Asian services turned off in January 2015. And now the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has decided to cut the remaining services to residents of remote parts of the Pacific, Papua New Guinea and parts of northern Australia by ceasing its shortwave radio services to the Pacific from the end of January 2017.

Students Create Brilliant Extension That Identifies Fake News

As the influence of fake news on the recent presidential election continues to be a hot topic, one group of students may have found a solution to getting duped by inaccurate sources.  A team of four graduate and undergrad students recently created “FiB,” a Google Chrome extension that verifies the authenticity of posts on Facebook to combat the circulation of fake news. What’s more, the group created the prototype in under 36 hours at a hackathon last month at Princeton University in New Jersey.  The tool is currently unavailable for public use, but Anant Goel, a freshman at Purdue University who’s involved in the project, told The Huffington Post in an email that the team plans to officially release it during the first week of January.  “We wanted to create a proof of concept that the issue of fake news in social media can be tackled at a large scale,” Goel told NBC News of the project.  The FiB extension helps users separate the real from the fake through its two verification models, Goel explained to HuffPost. It first gives the source of the news, link or image a confidence score based on the source’s past credibility, he said. The extension also takes a step further by looking at the content, extracting keywords, and getting a summary of the article.  “We perform multiple searches on keywords and summaries. Depending on the results of these searches we give it another confidence score,” Goel explained, adding that depending on if the scores pass a certain threshold, they’re marked either “verified” or “unverified.”  Following the election, companies like Facebook and Google came under fire when the propagation of fake news, which was hosted on the platforms, was said to have had a hand in swinging the decision in Donald Trump’s favor.

Weekend Roundup: How Social Media Splits the Global Conversation

Every year The WorldPost joins with MIT collective intelligence   research scientist Peter Gloor and the Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute in Zurich to measure the most influential thought leaders and the top platforms for the exchange of ideas in the global digital realm. The latest results are reported in the 2016 Global Thought Leaders Index , which examines the English, Spanish, German, Chinese and Arabic language areas on the web. You can find the methodology here .  As the map below of the globally-dominant English language web shows, The WorldPost/Huffington Post is the most prominent idea-spreading digital platform along with  The New York Times outside of social media, which is dominated by Facebook and Twitter.  What this year’s analysis also reveals, as I write in my summary of the key findings, is that, “the passionate political environment of 2016 appears to have marked a tipping point … where the influence of individuals sharing information on social media surpassed that of established media platforms. This shift matches the inversion of the old pyramid in which the authority and influence of elites in both society and the media once held the most sway over the majority of the population.”  Today, most now trust their peers but distrust elites and public institutions. “The combined result of these related developments …

Ageless Innovators: Market Disruptors Over 60

Photo Credit: Sean Su Most entrepreneurship programs and incubators focus on the young. Seasoned professionals are typically seen as a good source of unpaid labor as portrayed by Robert DeNiro in the movie The Intern . Like a fine wine that gets better with age, older professionals offer invaluable skills and are often overlooked as innovators. Vera Wang, Julia Childs, Nina Zagat, Stan Lee, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Chris Gardner and more were over the age of 40 before success embraced them.

Social Media Advertising Spend to Exceed Newspapers By 2020

It is no secret that social media is now an integral part of modern life. The exponential growth of social networks, coinciding with increased mobile use, means that advertisers are seeing a far bigger opportunity to reach their audience than by traditional methods. A new survey from Zenith has revealed that over the next four years we will see a tipping point when spend on social channels will outweigh that on physical newspapers. Much like modern day Citizen Kane, Zuckerberg and his disruptive peers are the new guardians of news content and communication. The rate of growth is remarkable and each year seems to put another nail in newspaper’s ‘Rosebud’-like coffin. Ad spend on social media is rising 20% every year, and in 2019 it is expected to reach £50.2bn surging past print’s £50.7bn spend in 2020. Facebook and Twitter are the biggest players, expecting to share 20% of all future online advertising
