Russian Malware Operation Linked To Britney Spears’ Instagram

Oops, they did it again. Russian hackers that is, this time hiding a sophisticated malware operation in Britney Spears ’ Instagram account. A gang of Russian hackers notorious for spying on foreign governments, diplomats and military facilities has come up with a clever back-door Trojan marriage between their operation and social media — most notably Spears’ Instagram, according to Slovakian cyber-security firm ESET , which discovered the ruse. The account — hopefully — wasn’t being used to target victims. Rather, it was used as a kind of camouflaged command center for the Turla hacker system. Comments posted to the site linked to a central server that sent instructions and trafficked hacked stolen data to and from computers infected by malware

Uber’s Sexist Culture Won’t Change Until Its Bro-In-Chief Departs

Can Uber really change its toxic bro culture if bro-in-chief Travis Kalanick sticks around?  As the company scrambles to fix a broken workplace, rife with inexperienced managers, weak human resource processes, sexual harassment and bullying, it’s hard to tell if CEO Kalanick, the Uber co-founder known for arrogance and misogyny, is capable of change. On Tuesday, Uber fired a stunning 20 employees ― some senior executives ― for a variety of offenses, including sexual harassment, bullying, bias and retaliation unearthed by an outside law firm. The departed may include one executive who mishandled the case of a customer raped by an Uber driver, tracking down her medical records and sharing them with colleagues. More firings are likely. Next week, Uber is expected to release a report on harassment and discrimination at a company-wide meeting, the result of a separate investigation led by former attorney general Eric Holder, now a partner at a big D.C. law firm.  The company is desperately seeking to change its reputation, in the gutter since at least February, when former engineer Susan Fowler published a blog post detailing horrifying sexual harassment

Uber Fires 20 After Harassment Probe

Uber has fired 20 employees as part of a larger inquiry into harassment claims, the company confirmed to HuffPost. The firings came after an independent law firm completed an investigation into 215 human resources claims , Bloomberg reported Tuesday. Of the 215 claims, 100 resulted in no action; 31 required employees to receive additional training; seven prompted written warnings; and 57 are still being investigated. Uber announced the firings at an all-hands on Tuesday, according to The New York Times . Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is leading a separate investigation into sexual harassment and discrimination claims at company. Uber board member Arianna Huffington, the former editor-in-chief of HuffPost, is helping oversee Holder’s probe. That investigation has concluded, but has yet to be publicly addressed

Your iPhone Could Stop You From Texting And Driving Soon

Apple unveiled a new iPhone feature this week that aims to cut down on the number of distracted drivers. The “Do Not Disturb While Driving” setting will automatically silence incoming texts and notifications while an iPhone is connected to a car via Bluetooth or cable,  the tech giant announced Monday . DNDWD, which will be available in fall 2017 with the release of Apple’s mobile operating system iOS 11, will allow users to send autotomatic replies to contacts attempting to reach them while they are behind the wheel. The auto-reply messages will consist of two responses, according to New York Magazine . The first will read: “I’m driving with Do Not Disturb turned on. I’ll see your message when I get where I’m going,” followed by: “If this is urgent, reply ‘urgent’ to send a notification through with your original message.” Drivers can still use Apple Maps, the company’s navigation app, though they will be unable to input destinations while driving, reported CNN

Yesterday Apple  unveiled  HomePod , a home speaker system that plays music and takes commands. The cylindrical,  motor-driven device  comes in white and space gray  and  will retail for $349  when it hits stores in December. But  Twitter  isn’t convinced the invention is entirely original. Instagram’s Latest Colorful Move For LGBTQ People Is A Must-See

Instagram is kicking Pride month off with a colorful new initiative that aims to encourage support for queer people around the world. On Wednesday, the app transformed the all-pink, oft-photographed facade of Paul Smith’s Los Angeles store into the first of its five “rainbow walls.” The wall was unveiled by Mayor Eric Garcetti at an evening ceremony that was attended by Instagram influencers Justin Blake ,  Raymond Braun  and  Jacob Tobia , along with other members of the city’s LGBTQ community.  The walls, which will also debut in London, Madrid, Nashville and Cleveland later in June, will each be emblazoned with the #KindComments hashtag so that visitors can use the photo-sharing app to find a “community of support” nearby, according to Instagram’s Chief Operating Officer Marne Levine .   In honor of Pride month, @instagram painted the famous @paulsmithwall on Melrose ✨ Stop by the geotag above and celebrate equality and love #kindcomments A post shared by Gray Malin (@graymalin) on May 31, 2017 at 5:27pm PDT The company’s mission, Levine said, is “to strengthen relationships through shared experiences,” and the “rainbow wall” initiative is one of many similar efforts that aim to do just that. “Every day we see members of our community coming to Instagram to share their passions and experiences,” she told HuffPost.

Our Data Could Be The Biggest Monopoly Ever

Imagine a commodity that immediately creates an unstoppable, ridiculously lucrative industry force that invades every aspect of our socio-economic infrastructure. If I asked you this in 1920 at a corner speakeasy, you’d tell me that oil was the product in question. Fast-forward nearly a century, and we’ve seen the very same degree of monopolistic dominance brought about by an entirely different good – the privatized data of others. Just as Rockefeller’s horizontally-integrated empire controlled the refinery of 90% of the oil sold in the US, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have continued to shock the world with egregious profits and a very similar stranglehold on the data of internet users. Whether or not you support the direction of these enterprises, one thing is for certain: your data has become the oil of the internet age, and it’s revolutionizing the way we perceive technology, economics, and social good. I think what many of us gloss over is the sheer amount of profitable data that each of us creates on a daily basis.

Mark Zuckerberg’s Sweet Bedtime Ritual For His Daughter

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has identified himself as an atheist  in the past, but it seems there are some spiritual traditions that he’s passing onto his daughter.  During a commencement speech at Harvard University last week , the dad told graduates about a bedtime ritual he’s established with his 1-year-old daughter Max. Zuckerberg, who was raised Jewish, said that he often turns to a Jewish prayer called “Mi Shebeirach” to round out the day with his child. “I am reminded of a prayer ‘Mi Shebeirach,’ that I say whenever I face a big challenge,” the 33-year-old tech entrepreneur said at the end of the speech. “That I sing to my daughter, thinking of her future when I tuck her in at night. And it goes, ‘May the source of strength who has blessed the ones before us help us find the courage to make our lives a blessing.’” “I hope you find the courage to make your life a blessing,” Zuckerberg told Harvard’s class of 2017 on Thursday.  Watch the full commencement speech below.
