Dakota Access Protesters Fighting Warrant To Search Their Facebook Accounts

An investigation into a traffic pileup at a protest last month in Washington state has led to a fight over a search warrant that targets the private Facebook accounts of  Dakota Access Pipeline  critics. Attempts by Whatcom County officials to retrieve private messages, log-in history and other account information for members of the Bellingham #NoDAPL Coalition have opened up th court battle.  The American Civil Liberties Union of Washington is trying to quash the warrant on behalf of the Facebook users. The warrant is “ an overbroad and unconstitutional request for private data ,” according to an ACLU motion filed this week in Washington state Superior Court. Providing authorities with the requested data violates First Amendment freedoms of speech and association, and Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable search, the ACLU motion said.  If upheld after a hearing on Tuesday, the search warrant would affect a wide range of people who posted to the #NoDAPL coalition page from Feb. 4-15 or simply interacted on Facebook with people who “liked” the group during that period. The number of users potentially affected is easily in the hundreds.  Boston College law professor Robert Bloom told The Huffington Post that the search warrant “looks a little troubling.” The request from Whatcom County officials “needs to be specific so police can’t go rummaging around, so to speak,” he added.  The dispute over the search warrant originated with an investigation by the Whatcom County prosecutor and sheriff’s office into a protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline that blocked part of an interstate highway in Bellingham in February.  About 100 demonstrators obstructed several lanes for more than an hour, causing a 4-mile traffic jam Feb. 11, according to The Bellingham Herald

Airbus’ Driving/Flying Pod Concept Has Us Dreaming Traffic Is Over

Traffic could be a thing of the past if this  new concept design  from Airbus ever comes to fruition. The Pop.Up is the aircraft company’s epic idea for a hybrid driving and flying machine that would serve commuters in a transportation network. Its detachable capsule  connects to either a four-wheeled driving base or a set of high-tech wings, depending on road conditions. Simply plug your destination into the capsule’s app , wait for it to arrive, and let it drive or fly you from Point A to B.  Airbus and design brand  Italdesign  unveiled a non-working prototype  of Pop.Up this week at the Geneva Motor Show. The vehicle, which theoretically drives or pilots itself with zero emissions, is meant to benefit both travelers and the environment.  “Urban transportation is moving into the third dimension , exploring city skies to contribute to relieving congested roads and reducing emissions,” Airbus said in a press release, adding their vehicle “makes full use of both ground and airspace.” There isn’t a timeline for when or if these pods become a reality, and Engadget notes “any practical use is going to be years away .” We’ll keep muddling through freeway traffic , but we won’t stop dreaming.  — This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms. This Is A Story About ‘This Is Sparta!’

There was once a time when “This is Sparta” was arguably one of the more boring phrases in the English language ― reviewed on a projector that’s lightbulb always seemed to be dying during high school history class. If you went to high school in the late 2000s, you likely witnessed the tidal wave moment when the phrase rose from seemingly nothing to a generational obsession. The movie  “300” debuted 10 years ago on March 9, 2007. It went on to gross nearly half a billion dollars worldwide, but its true accomplishment was domination over the American teen lexicon. The movie was intentionally ridiculous and bombastic, which led to it being, for a time, infinitely quotable.  The most memorable scene came when the protagonist, King Leonidas of Sparta (Gerard Butler), declines peace with the Persians by kicking their messenger into a giant man-made hole while screaming ― you guessed it ― “This is Sparta!” A whole industry sprouted up, parodying and referencing the movie. The horribly reviewed “Meet the Spartans” was a 2008 movie in the vain of the satirical “Scary Movie.” Despite getting a 2-percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes , it earned nearly $85 million in the box office as “300” held onto culture.

You Thought Tech Bros Were Bad

This column originally appeared in Emily Peck’s newsletter, a weekly email that looks at the convergence of women, economics, business and politics. Sign up here .  Welp, you thought Silicon Valley bros were bad. But if you’re looking for the headquarters of the modern-day  He-Man Woman Hater’s club , it’s the U.S. Marines you’re after.   Apparently 30,000 of them were members of a closed Facebook group where they’d share nude photos of female marines, the MarineTimes first reported. Sometimes nude pics were accompanied by a woman’s name and rank.

Gunslinging Woman Chases Drone After It Starts Filming Her Home

Dramatic video reportedly taken by a drone last week in Washington state appears to show a woman trying to shoot the device out of the sky after it flew way too close to her home for her liking. The 35-second YouTube video that has since gone viral shows the woman first throwing items at the flying pest before going inside and returning with what looks like a firearm. Though the incident may seem staged, police in Bellevue, where the video’s description lists it as being filmed, told The Huffington Post that on Wednesday they received a call about a drone flying “above and around” a home that matches this one’s description. Public Information Officer Seth Tyler said that though the drone clearly set its camera on the woman’s home, an investigation didn’t find any criminal offenses committed. “The laws apply to unsafe operations,” Tyler told HuffPost Tuesday. “In this case, it appears that they were flying in a public area.” Regarding any voyeurism laws being broken, he suggested that the homeowner did not have a reasonable expectation of privacy because her window curtains were open
