Republicans Are About To Sell Your Browser History. Here’s How To Protect Yourself.

Comcast has done the impossible. Somehow, Americans are about to hate it (and just about every other large internet service provider in the country) more than  they already do . Thanks in no small part to the efforts of those ISPs, the House of Representatives passed a bill Tuesday that would allow internet and telecom companies to share customers’ personal information, including web browsing history , without their consent. Rep.  Marsha Blackburn  (R-Tenn.), who introduced the legislation in the House, has  received $693,000 from the internet and telecom industry  over the course of her 14-year political career, including $77,000 from Comcast, $98,600 from Verizon, and $104,000 from AT&T. While we’re on the subject,  here’s a complete list of every politician who voted for Tuesday’s bill , and how much the telecom industry gave them in their most recent election cycle.  Yeah

Uber Needs To Do Better When It Comes To Diversity

After years of keeping its diversity data hidden  away,  Uber released its first  diversity report Tuesday, under the direction of its new Chief Human Resources Officer Liane Hornsey. The report revealed that Uber employees are mostly white and mostly male, especially at the more senior levels of the company.  A full 78 percent of Uber’s workers at the director level or above are men, and 76.7 percent of the company leadership is white. Tuesday’s disclosure is part of a concerted PR effort to right the ship at the company after a series of scandals. Uber has faced  allegations of   rampant sexual harassment  from former employees; a high-profile lawsuit that contends Uber stole trade secrets from a Google-founded competitor;  numerous high-profile departures; and a video showing CEO Travis Kalanick  telling off a driver . “This report is a first step in showing that diversity and inclusion is a priority at Uber,” Kalanick said  in a statement

Elon Musk Just Launched A New Startup

Does Elon Musk ever sleep? Probably. But whatever the amount, it’s likely diminished even more now, as the serial entrepreneur ― already busy with Tesla, SpaceX and Solar City, not to mention  The Boring Company  and Hyperloop ― has launched another company. His newest venture, called Neuralink, will research how to connect the human brain and computers by way of tiny, implanted electrodes. Max Hodak, a company insider at Neuralink, confirmed the news to the Wall Street Journal Monday, describing the state of the startup as “embryonic.” While Neuralink may be brand new, the concept it hopes to capitalize on is not. Musk spoke publicly about the idea at Recode’s 2016 Code Conference , describing a need for some sort of “neural lace” to enable direct human/computer interfacing.

Increase the Quality of Facebook Leads With Context Cards

It used to be too simple to submit forms on Facebook. But based on advertiser feedback, the social network has changed its Lead Generation ad format recently to make it tougher for users to sign up. Facebook launched lead generation ads last year, which gave users a quick way to sign up for information from the brands they care about. Whether brands want to encourage people to subscribe to a newsletter, signup for an event, or get more information about a promotional offer, lead gen ads simplify the signup process.

Hell that no fury like a teenager denied their cell phone. A 15-year-old boy in southern Spain reported his mother to police after she confiscated his device in a bid to get him to study for a test. The mom, 37, asked her son to hand over his phone at their home in El Ejido, near Almeria, on Feb. 28 , La Voz De Almeria newspaper reports.

Weekend Roundup: The End Of (Human) History

Francis Fukuyama famously declared that the triumph of liberal democracy and free markets after the Cold War heralded “ the end of history .” Yuval Noah Harari  now predicts the end of human history as post-Promethean science grants us godlike powers to redesign our own species and create a new one in the form of artificial intelligence. Only time will tell if his vision of the future is closer to the mark than Fukuyama’s, and if humans as we know ourselves today will even be around to witness it. As the Israeli historian says in a WorldPost interview, “Human history began when men created gods. It will end when men become gods.” Harari contends that a new mythic authority ― “dataism” ― is being born and that the algorithm is its patron saint. “Authority came down from the clouds, moved to the human heart and now authority is shifting back to the Google cloud and the Microsoft cloud,” he provocatively quips

Uber Grounds Self-Driving Car Fleet After Serious Arizona Crash

Uber is suspending its entire self-driving car program while it investigates a serious crash of one of its vehicles in Arizona. Uber confirmed the accident after a photo was posted on Twitter showing an Uber SUV Volvo on its side next to another dented car with broken windows. The crash occurred in Tempe, but Uber offered few other details. A spokeswoman told Tech Crunch that Uber’s autonomous car program — currently being tested in Arizona, Pittsburgh and just recently again in San Francisco — has been suspended pending an investigation.

Flying Taxis Could Soon Be Coming To A Sky Near You

Flying taxis and other futuristic passenger vehicles are about to take a giant leap out of science fiction and into reality. It’s not exactly the vision of the “ Back To The Future ” film trilogy, which predicted that by 2015 we’d fill the skies with flying cars and get around on personal anti-gravity hoverboards. But it turns out the movies may have just been a few years off. Singapore plans to have airborne cabs taking flight by 2030, according to the island city-state’s  Business Times  daily newspaper.
