Pokemon Go Players Rescue Dozens Of Abandoned Animals

Twenty-seven small animals can thank Pokemon Go for saving their lives. Sara Perez and her friend Matthew Teague were playing the game at a park in South Houston on Tuesday when they stumbled upon a cage full of 20 hamsters and seven newborn mice, apparently abandoned in the strong heat. ”We were just surprised and confused, and we looked around the park and called out to see if anyone was there, but there was no one,” Perez told Click2 Houston. The cage was inside a box with no water and just a bit of birdseed. “There was no one else at the park,” Perez told The Huffington Post in an email, noting that she and Teague rushed the animals back to her home

Here’s An Innovative Way To Get More Women Into The Boardroom

There still aren’t many women at the upper echelons of the tech industry ― especially at private companies that may at some point go public. Women hold just 7 percent of the board seats on private tech companies and 10 percent of the seats on the ‘unicorn’ startups valued at $1 billion or more, according to data released Thursday by the Boardlist, a year-old venture aiming to recruit more female directors.  By comparison, about 20 percent of the board seats on the Fortune 500 are held by women ― nowhere near parity, of course, but far better than these tech outfits. For their survey, Boardlist looked at 169 unicorn companies and 200 private tech companies. These private companies are the future of the industry ― they may be the next Google or Facebook and it’s important for them to get gender diversity right early on, Boardlist founder Sukhinder Singh Cassidy told The Huffington Post. The longer you wait to fix these problems, the harder it gets.    “We need solutions,” said Singh Cassidy, who is also CEO of video shopping platform Joyus and formerly worked at Google and Amazon. A year ago she launched her solution: The Boardlist, a searchable database of qualified female board candidates that companies can access when they’re searching for directors

Manhattanhenge Returns To The Big Apple For The Last Time In 2016

Happy  Manhattanhenge ! The spectacular sunset that aligns perfectly with Manhattan’s street grid returns to New York City  on Monday and Tuesday at 8:20 p.m. EST. These are the last times to see the semiannual phenomenon in 2016. Manhattanhenge creates “a radiant glow of light across Manhattan’s brick and steel canyons , simultaneously illuminating both the north and south sides of every cross street of the borough’s grid.”  At least that’s how astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson has described the phenomenon. And it was Tyson, a native Manhattanite, who first popularized the term “Manhattanhenge.” Manhattanhenge ― the name is a nod to the prehistoric monument Stonehenge, which was built to align with the rising sun during the summer solstice ― occurs because of the roughly east-west alignment of the borough’s street grid.

Tech Guy Celebrates Marissa Mayer For All The Wrong Reasons

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is so committed to her job that just minutes after giving birth she was back to work, a friend and Silicon Valley entrepreneur recently boasted.  “Mayer is by far the hardest working person in Silicon Valley,” Max Levchin told Pando’s Sarah Lacy . “She gave birth to twins and then traded emails with me about a feature of a product she was launching in a week, within, from what I could tell, 20 minutes of giving birth,” said the PayPal cofounder, speaking before a group of people.  The audience tittered. “She is intensely committed to her cause. She’s awesome,” said Levchin, who is now devoted mainly to a new consumer finance startup called Affirm. He also talked about how much he respects Mayer for being a pioneer and one of the few women to ascend to such a high level in tech. “She is a woman who rose through the ranks in the male-dominated world,” he said. “I think that’s pretty special.” Levchin’s comments do more than just celebrate his friend, though. Applauding such an extreme work ethic sends a pretty clear message to those interested in growing and developing their careers: Work all the time and give up everything if you want to succeed.  Every time an influential person makes a statement like Levchin’s ― celebrating someone’s obvious personal sacrifice, it sets both men and women back just a bit.

Facebook Denies Report That Police Deleted Philando Castile Video

Facebook denied a provocative report on Friday claiming that police deleted a video of the shooting of Philando Castile, the black man killed by a white officer during a traffic stop in Minnesota. Reached by The Huffington Post, a spokeswoman for Facebook maintained that a technical glitch caused the temporary removal of the video , which shows footage of the 32-year-old slumped over in his seat, covered in blood, after the officer shot him four times as he reached for his ID.  Earlier on Friday, The Register, a tech news website based in London, published a report  claiming police had deleted the video after handcuffing Castile’s fiancée, Diamond “Lavish” Reynolds, who filmed the incident from the passenger seat of their car. “Multiple sources with knowledge of the event have tonight confirmed to The Register that someone – highly suspected to be the city’s police – used her phone to remove her recording from public view shortly after the shooting,” the website wrote. It’s unclear who those sources are and how the video would have been returned to Facebook if police deleted it. Recording live video via the Facebook app does not automatically create a locally saved video file on your phone, and deleting a live video from your profile generates a warning that the move is permanent

Google, Airbnb, Other Tech Giants Waste Tons Of Food. This Group Rescues It

While getting free lobster, Sriracha vanilla yogurt and crab artichoke ravioli at work may boost collaboration among employees , it also generates an unwanted byproduct — plenty of food waste.  In Silicon Valley, where booming tech companies provide ample amounts of gratis grub, having hordes of perfectly edible leftovers has become the norm. Many of these companies, though, won’t send the uneaten fare to the trash. A number of them have partnered with Food Runners , a local nonprofit that picks up food from companies and distributes it to people in need. And the need in San Francisco is “tremendous,” according to L’Ann Bingham, Food Runners community relations representative. There, one in seven people struggles with hunger, according to Feeding America.  The partnership between Food Runners and area tech companies is so strong that they provide about half of the goods Food Runners retrieves, BuzzFeed reported last year. The group delivers 5,000 meals a week, Bingham told The Huffington Post.
