Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg Finally Details Fake News Countermeasures

Facebook Inc, facing withering criticism for failing to stem a flood of phony news articles in the run-up to the U.S. presidential election , is taking a series of steps to weed out hoaxes and other types of false information, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post Friday evening. Facebook has long insisted that it is a technology company and not a publisher, and rejects the idea that it should be held responsible for the content that its users circulate on the platform. Just after the election, Zuckerberg said the notion that fake or misleading news on Facebook had helped swing the election to Donald Trump was a “ crazy idea .” Zuckerberg then said last Saturday that more than 99 percent of what people see on Facebook is authentic, calling “only a very small amount” fake news and hoaxes. But in his Friday posting Zuckerberg struck a decidedly different tone. He said Facebook has been working on the issue of misinformation for a long time, calling the problem complex both technically and philosophically.

Are you Using Social Media Correctly?

Social media is about listening to and engaging with stakeholders. Establishing a relationship with your followers (always buy followers at Mohr Publicity) is more important than increasing the number of fans or measuring the return on investment. It’s about strengthening your online community, receiving feedback from those who matter most and creating more advocates for your brand. It’s no surprise that Facebook has more than 1.7 billion monthly active users worldwide, but did you know Instagram has surpassed 500 million monthly active users? People love sharing photos.

Twitter is Transforming How We Watch Football – What’s Next?

Thursday Night Football got an unexpected new home this season: Twitter. Earlier this spring, the social media platform famed for 140-character comments announced it would be teaming up with the NFL to broadcast ten games, throwing its hat into the live sports streaming arena. If you haven’t checked out a game with Twitter yet, maybe you should – it may be a tipping point that marks an interesting shift in the way we watch sports and other live video content.   While the first Thursday Night Football stream got off to an underwhelming start, with just 2.1 million viewers tuning in to watch the New York Jets beat the Buffalo Bills, Twitter has since seen a steady uptick – growing its audience by 31% to about 3.1 million viewers per game.

The Ugly Underside Of The Web: Hate Speech

Free speech is at the foundation of our liberties. And throughout history, we’ve argued passionately about issues, believes, ideas, and policies. It’s not always pretty – but the right to say what we believe, and to publish those beliefs has been an essential part of liberty. In this past year, something changed. Free speech morphed into hateful speech. Vile, angry, threatening, racist, misogynist epithets fired like weapons at political opponents.

Facebook, Google Take Small Steps To Stop Spread Of Fake News

Facebook and Google announced Monday that they were taking steps to restrict ads from fake news outlets after facing criticism that hoax stories helped swing the presidential election in favor of Donald Trump . Facebook said Monday that it would ban fake news sites from using its Facebook Audience Network, which allows websites to generate revenue   by including Facebook ads. Also Monday, Google said it would work to prevent websites selling fake news from using its AdSense advertising network. While both companies are taking a step in the right direction, the efforts won’t completely fix the problem of fake news stories bubbling up on the two major websites. “Facebook’s move doesn’t address the fake news that appears in users’ news feeds, the focus of criticism of the social network,” the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. It’s also not clear how the social network will identify what’s fake and what’s real.

This Dell Laptop Never Worked. How About A Refund?

Leslie Woz' Dell laptop is a lemon, and now it's out of warranty. Should the company honor an implied warranty? Question : I need your help with a Dell Inspiron laptop that died from a failed motherboard after 14 months. While on the surface it would seem that since this is beyond the 12-month warranty period, I believe that we had a valid case for an exception because the laptop did not function correctly from day one, required three onsite visits by technicians who took the laptop apart and replaced numerous parts, as well as several very long technical troubleshooting sessions over the phone in which it was discovered that the laptop had the wrong or outdated software. The laptop was finally repaired to the point of being usable three months after the purchase date, and I believe that it is only fair that the warranty should have started at that point.
