Boston-Based Startup Simplifies Music Production

The music industry is a notoriously tough one to crack. With scores of musicians vying for recording contracts at labels such as Sony Music, the environment is intensely competitive. While it may seem like anyone equipped with a smartphone, a voice and a social media presence can become a star, the production process remains a challenge for many, even for those with music training. For beginners simply looking to learn the basics of music production, the learning curve is especially steep. SoundBridge , a startup comprised of a team of musicians, aims to change that

Dems Call GOP Effort To Protect Exxon An ‘Embarrassment’

The House Committee on Science, Space and Technology held a  hearing Wednesday seemingly with the goal of affirming that chairman Lamar Smith  (R-Texas) has the authority to subpoena those investigating whether  the oil industry covered up  what it knew about climate change. But Democrats on the committee used the hearing to slam Smith and the GOP for what they say are embarrassing efforts to defend the oil industry. Before a lengthy back-and-forth in which many, including three expert legal witnesses, came to Smith’s defense, ranking committee member Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Texas) blasted the  longtime climate change denier , calling his actions embarrassing, ironic and a brazen attempt to help ExxonMobil.  Since being established 58 years ago, Johnson said, the House committee has effectively and appropriately used its oversight authority. That’s no longer true, she said, because of Smith. “Today the majority party seems to  view its oversight powers as a political tool , and the committee’s investigative authority as unbounded,” Johnson said

Zuckerberg In Nigeria: How "Doing Business" Will Change Africa

When some think about entrepreneurship, they imagine how the Gates, Brins, Winfreys, and Dangotes of the world are feeding economic mobility and self-sufficiency. For me, however, the story of entrepreneurship not reserved for a select and privileged few begins in Lagos, Nigeria. Growing up in Nigeria I was surrounded by entrepreneurship, although we simply referred to it as “doing business.” I saw that entrepreneurial spirit in mother who ran three profitable businesses at any given time; my uncle, the medical doctor, who sold shoes and suits bought during his family’s Italian vacations to friends and family; and the street-hawkers who had everything I could possibly need to get through 3 hours in traffic on Third Mainland Bridge. From the very highly educated to those whose only education came from life lessons, the hustler mentality born out of economic need was alive and well. No matter your stated 9 to 5 (or lack thereof), you were expected to hold the moniker of businessman or businesswoman.

Ex-Apple Engineer Rejected For Genius Bar Job Adds Fuel To Ageism Debate

JK Scheinberg has quite the resume. He was one of the Apple engineers instrumental in moving the Mac to Intel processors. But when he tried to re-enter the workforce after retiring, he found it wasn’t so easy to get a job with his former employer. Scheinberg retired at the age of 54 ― after 21 years at Apple ― and later decided he wanted to get a new job to keep himself busy. He interviewed for a position with the Genius Bar, a tech support station at Apple retail stores that is run by people with extensive knowledge about the products’ hardware and software. Scheinberg didn’t get the job.  His experience was briefly featured by The New York Times in a Sept

The Power Of Community — Both Actual And Virtual — And A Lost Tortoise

Sometimes, it takes a village to rescue a tortoise. I was driving down my alley when I spied an animal ambling along the entrance to my garage. Was it a possum out during the day? A wounded cat? I got out of my car to avoid hitting it and …
