Police Could Get Your Location Data Without A Warrant. That Has To End

By Charles Blain for WIRED . The more we rely on technology, the more detailed a technological footprint we leave behind. A recent study from Deloitte shows that, on average, American millennials check their phones roughly 82 times a day. This dependence on technology has led to a world where most people are never more than a few feet away from their cell phone at any given time. Being constantly connected to the world is one of the many benefits of our advanced society, but unfortunately, privacy regulations haven’t kept pace with the advances we’ve made.

How Some Of Trump’s Bad Tweets Are Helping Puppies And Kittens

Here’s a little solace when you’re thinking about President Donald Trump’s rampant Twitter habit. Sometimes, those presidential barbs may be helping animals. Folks at digital marketing company The Think Tank, or T3 , noticed that when Trump’s tweets criticize a company — like when he complained about Boeing in a tweet about building a new 747 Air Force One — the company’s stock tends to briefly fall. So, they created “Trump and Dump,” a bot that picks up when Trump mentions a publicly traded company or brand in a tweet. The bot uses an algorithm to analyze whether the mention is positive or negative, and if it’s sufficiently negative, it immediately short-sells  that company’s shares.

Masaya Nakamura, Executive Behind ‘Pac-Man,’ Dead At 91

Masaya Nakamura, the founder of an innovative Japanese entertainment company that invented the video game “Pac-Man,” has died. He was 91. The Associated Press  reported Monday that game maker Bandai Namco, which includes the company Nakamura founded in 1955, confirmed his death, which occurred Jan. 22. Company officials did not reveal a cause, The New York Times reported.  Nakamura’s company, Namco, introduced “Pac-Man” in 1980, as the video game industry was in its infancy. The game became an instant hit with arcade players, who enjoyed racking up points by moving a chomping, circular Pac-Man around a board with an insatiable appetite to eat gold balls and elude ghosts.  Versions of “Pac-Man” were later made for home-gaming systems like Nintendo. Its popularity led to “Pac-Man”-themed merchandise and apparel, a short-lived animated television series, and spinoff games like “Ms.

Zuckerberg To Trump: Time For A Reality Check On Immigration

As President Donald Trump wraps up a week of turning campaign absurdities into nightmarish policies,  Facebook  CEO  Mark Zuckerberg on Friday joined dissenters with a post condemning Trump’s anti-immigrant actions . “The United States is a nation of immigrants, and we should be proud of that,” Zuckerberg writes  in a Facebook post. He noted that his grandparents immigrated from Europe, while his wife Priscilla’s parents were refugees from China and Vietnam. In his  first week as president, Trump has ordered construction of a wall on the border with Mexico and signed an executive order  that bans Syrians from taking refuge in the U.S., halts the refugee resettlement program and temporarily blocks people from a handful of unnamed countries from entering at all. Even legal immigrants are being warned  not to travel outside the U.S., lest they be barred from reentry.  The United States is a nation of immigrants, and we should be proud of that. Yes, Zuckerberg concedes, Americans’ safety matters

Here Are The Many Movies Netflix And Amazon Bought At Sundance

Every January, Hollywood executives huddle in Park City to acquire rights to movies that bow at the Sundance Film Festival . Relishing the energy of a (hopefully) euphoric premiere, indie-studio heads sometimes shovel out several million dollars per title, hoping to get their paws on whatever will become the year’s commercial hits and/or Oscar darlings. Fox Searchlight has lately been one of Sundance’s bigger spenders. The studio dropped a feverish $17.5 million for last year’s “The Birth of a Nation,” a record-setting sum that doesn’t look so hot in hindsight .

Facebook Inches Timidly Forward In Fight Against Fake News

Facebook has taken another small step forward in its battle to limit the proliferation of fake news on the social network. On Wednesday, the company announced that it would begin rolling out a redesigned “trending” module  that ― at least in theory ― should expose users to more reliably sourced content. That redesign consists of three changes: Trending stories will no longer be tailored to individual users. Instead, everyone in the same region will see the same stories.
