Living With The Incivility Of Trolls Online And Surviving

Anyone is capable of troll behavior, according to recent research from Stanford University and Cornell University. Wake-up on the wrong of bed, having a bad day or simply become irate over an online discussion and your fingers may go flying before your brain kicks in to bring it to a screeching halt. Did you know according to a UCLA study , people that overshare online are less like to receive empathy or help from others if they are being harassed or abused digitally by trolls? So humble braggers beware, if you’re constantly exaggerating (or oversharing) about your life events and suddenly find yourself as a target of online harassment, don’t be shocked if some of your friends aren’t stepping in to defend you. Trolls have been with us since the dawn of time; there will always be some incivility Pew Research Center and Elon University’s Imagining the Internet Center just released a new study that surveyed more than 1,500 technologists and scholars about the forces shaping the way people interact with one another online

Cards Against Humanity Founder Vows To Expose Lawmakers’ Web Histories

Cards Against Humanity wants to teach Republican lawmakers a lesson in internet privacy. Max Temkin, co-founder of the irreverent card game, tweeted on Monday that if Congress passed a bill allowing telecom and cable companies to share customers’ personal information without their consent, he would buy Congress members’ web browsing histories and publish them online. If this shit passes I will buy the browser history of every congressman and congressional aide and publish it. cc @SpeakerRyan https://t.co/cOL3mx6JuG — Max Temkin (@MaxTemkin) March 27, 2017 When the House of Representatives passed the bill, known as S.J.Res. 34, on Tuesday, Temkin doubled down on his threat  and announced that he was  matching donations to the digital rights nonprofit Electronic Frontier Foundation up to $10,000.  “The desire for privacy is just fundamental to human dignity,” Temkin told The Huffington Post on Thursday

SpaceX Launches And Lands The First Recycled Orbital Rocket Ever

SpaceX flew a previously used rocket on Thursday in an unprecedented test of the durability of space equipment.  The Falcon 9 booster took off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida and landed on an ocean platform called “ Of Course I Still Love You .” The aerospace company founded by Elon Musk said it was the “ world’s first reflight of an orbital class rocket .” If such rockets can be used more than once, the cost of orbital flights by SpaceX (and others) could be vastly reduced.  Falcon 9 first stage has landed on Of Course I Still Love You — world’s first reflight of an orbital class rocket. — SpaceX (@SpaceX) March 30, 2017 The Falcon 9 booster was previously used in April 2016. Denmark Just Drove Uber Out Of The Country

Ride-hailing group Uber Technologies will withdraw services in Denmark next month due to a taxi law that sets out new requirements for drivers such as mandatory fare meters, the company said on Tuesday. Uber has faced headwinds since its app went online in Denmark in November 2014 as local taxi driver unions, companies and politicians complained that Uber posed unfair competition by not meeting legal standards required for established taxi firms. Uber, which says about 2,000 Danish drivers and 300,000 riders use its app, said in a statement that it would shut down its services in Denmark on April 18 due to the new law. “For us to operate in Denmark again the proposed regulations need to change. We will continue to work with the government in the hope that they will update their proposed regulations and enable Danes to enjoy the benefits of modern technologies like Uber,” Uber said. Despite the minority liberal government’s ambitions to deregulate the taxi business and accommodate new operations like Uber, the taxi law passed in February introduced measures such as mandatory fare meters and seat sensors

Laptops, Other Electronics Banned On Some Flights To U.S.

The United States and United Kingdom have banned laptops, tablets and other electronic devices in the cabins of some flights from airlines operating in parts of North Africa and the Middle East. The U.S. ban, which affects devices larger than a cellphone ― including cameras, DVD players and electronic games ― went into effect Tuesday morning, senior Trump administration officials said in a conference call with reporters.  Federal officials, requesting anonymity, said intensifying threats from terrorist groups against commercial airlines and airports prompted the new rules. Officials from the Departments of Homeland Security and Transportation imposed the change, officials said in the conference call.  “Evaluated intelligence indicates that terrorist groups continue to target commercial aviation, to include smuggling explosive devices in various consumer items,” said a DHS fact sheet released Tuesday. “The record of terrorist attempts to destroy aircraft in flight is longstanding and well-known.” The rules affect passengers on direct flights to the U.S.
