This CEO Is Famous For His Social Activism, But He’s Silent On Trump

A few major companies and chief executives are starting to mobilize against Donald Trump, but one CEO remains notably mum. Marc Benioff, the outspoken “social activist” leader of software company Salesforce, has so far said next to nothing about the presumptive GOP presidential nominee. Pressed repeatedly by The Huffington Post for his thoughts on Trump, whose stances against Muslims, immigrants and women have earned him, most recently, the ire of tech powerhouse Apple , Benioff has declined comment. Just last month, The Wall Street Journal dubbed the 51-year-old Benioff an “activist CEO,” a new kind of corporate leader unafraid to take on the kinds of controversial issues typical corporate chieftains fear to touch.

Apple Withholds Support For GOP Convention Because Of Donald Trump

Apple will not contribute funds or other resources for the Republican National Convention due to presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump’s prejudiced remarks, Politico reported on Saturday . The decision by one of the United States’ largest and most popular companies is the biggest corporate defection from the Republican convention, where the party will formally nominate Donald Trump. And it marks a significant win for progressive groups, which are pressuring major companies to boycott the convention over Trump. Apple specifically pointed to Trump’s comments about minority groups, immigrants and women in explaining its choice, two sources with knowledge of the decision told Politico. “The Apple news raises the bar for other corporations,” Rashad Robinson, a spokesman for ColorOfChange PAC, said in a statement. The PAC is leading efforts to pressure companies not to participate in this year’s GOP gathering.

WASHINGTON — When it comes to haters, first lady Michelle Obama just doesn’t listen to them. During a conversation with Oprah Winfrey at the United State of Women summit in Washington on Tuesday, the first lady said she’s learned to tune out people who criticize her online. ” Well, when it comes to social media — there are just times I turn off the world, you know.  There are just some times you have to give yourself space to be quiet, which means you’ve got to set those phones down,” she said. “You can’t be reading all that stuff.  I mean, that’s like letting somebody just walk up and slap you, you know?

Bringing An Inuit Language Into The Digital Age

Nunavut’s language experts looked to the past to invent new words for the digital age. “Meet the North,” a series that ventures into the lives of some of the 4 million people who call the Arctic home, learns how a language stays strong in the Facebook era. OTTAWA – I’m sitting at a patio table with two of Nunavut’s foremost language experts, Leena Evic and Eva Aariak. We’re in Eva’s backyard drinking tea, eating homemade cookies and talking about the internet. And they’re about to blow my mind. The Inuktitut word for internet, “ikiaqqijjut,” is often translated as “the tool to travel through layers.” But Eva stresses that it needs more explanation

In The Future, ‘Made In China’ Could Become ‘Made In Africa’

There’s a pretty good chance that some of the clothes you’re wearing, the shoes on your feet and even the device you’re using to read this were made in China. Even as its economy slows, China remains the world’s factory, churning out billions of dollars every year of goods. The government, though, wants to change this, which could be a huge opportunity for countries like Ethiopia — and the continent of Africa as a whole. As China transitions its economy from manufacturing to services , some  85 million jobs will be up for grabs as a lot of that industrial production looks for a new home. Ethiopia , for its part, is aggressively positioning itself as a destination for some  of that Chinese manufacturing
