Google Is Surreptitiously Making Amazing Movies From People’s Cat Photos

If you use Google Photos, you’ve probably experienced the app’s “assistant” feature taking the liberty of creating suggested collages, stories or mini-movies out of your pictures. If you’re like most people, you usually ignore these suggestions. If you’re a cat lover, however, you may be getting a suggestion soon that you definitely  won’t want to ignore. That’s because Google may be making you a “Meow Movie.” “I got a notification on my phone last night,” writer Courtney Gillette told HuffPost in an email. “It was from my Google Photos app, and it said, ‘Your Meow Movie is ready.’” The notification included a happy cat face emoji, she said. A “Meow Movie” is, well, what you might expect

A Glitch On Donald Trump’s Website Lets You Put Words Into His Mouth

A little glitch on President Donald Trump’s website is causing a lot of laughs. A seemingly inconspicuous bug is letting people create their own fake but still-functioning URLs that direct to his site’s press release page. By simply typing whatever they like after www.donaldjtrump.com/press-releases/ into an internet browser’s address bar, they can (almost) put words into the president’s mouth. Reddit users spotted the flaw  early Tuesday ― and soon began exploiting the vulnerability, to amusing effect: Comment from discussion Donald Trump's 'Muslim Ban” Disappears from Website After Sean Spicer Questioned About It .

First Look: AdWords New Interface

A handful of advertisers are being invited to try out the Alpha release of Google AdWords’ new interface. We got to take a first look at the new AdWords interface, and have some screen shots to share with you. The biggest change is in the navigation. Google’s opted to use a left-hand menu system, which works very well for wider screens. On the first page, the dashboard looks a lot more colourful, and includes some new data on it. Opportunities are a even more prominent now, as the tab is placed above Campaigns and Ad Groups. The layout is a bit easier to work with.

How To Bring Satellite Data Back Down To Earth

By Sarah Scoles for WIRED . Christopher Richins has had a somewhat obscure to-do item — “start a multinational space company” — on his list since he was a young guy. Back then, he worked for Sea Launch, a company that put Russian and Ukrainian rockets on Norwegian ships, sent the ships sailing toward the equator, and launched satellites from the middle of the ocean. “This was the coolest, most James-Bond thing I’d ever heard of,” Richins says.

The One Hire Facebook Really Needs To Make To Curb Violence

By Emily Dreyfuss for WIRED . On Wednesday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said his company will hire 3,000 people to watch for violent footage posted to the site. The decision comes after two horrific videos caught global attention in recent weeks: a man uploaded a video of himself murdering a grandfather in Cleveland, and a man in Thailand hanged his infant and then himself in a Facebook Live video the authorities saw too late. They will be joining the 4,500 people Facebook already pays to screen videos flagged by users around the world as inappropriate — work that in theory could at the very least prevent such atrocities from lingering on the site. It’s a commendable response, albeit of the brute-force, ex post facto variety.

FCC Chairman To Propose Reversing ‘Net Neutrality’ Rules

By David Shepardson WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The head of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission on Wednesday proposed overturning the landmark 2015 Obama-era net neutrality rules that prohibit broadband providers from giving or selling access to certain internet services over others. A plan to reverse the rules approved by the FCC under Democratic President Barack Obama is expected to set off a fight over the future of the internet regulation. Ajit Pai, who was named chair of the FCC by President Donald Trump in January, said at a speech in Washington he was aiming to reverse rules that gave the government greater regulatory powers over internet service providers, arguing they cost jobs and depressed investment. “Do we want the government to control the Internet? Or do we want to embrace the light-touch approach” in place since 1996 until revised in 2015, he asked.
