Beyond the Highlight Reel, When Living Out Loud Gets Hard

People often complain about the “highlight reel” of social media: the Photoshopped, Instagram-filtered perfect life-view depicting a constant stream of gorgeous landscapes and backdrops, once-in-a-lifetime adventures and of course, the perfect outfit. As a social media professional, it’s easy for me to recognize the carefully crafted shots and understand the effort it takes to capture moments like these, even for models traveling on yachts in the Mediterranean Sea. And as someone who has chosen to live my life out loud, I also understand what’s not being captured, like the long-lines, the rude customer service experience or the broken toenail from one too many glasses of wine the night before. As curators of content, we don’t post things people don’t want to consume. And as I recommend to my clients, while it’s important to always put your best self forward but also, and this is key — be honest, authentic and transparent about the not-so-good-stuff. When these things are all done well, in concert, social media is a beautiful work of art, a digital impressionist vision of reality

What If The Eggplant Emoji Was A Gay Horror Movie?

One of the most interesting things about living in the digital age is that way that technology has transformed how we communicate — including the way that we sext. Emojis have changed the game when it comes to talking to friends, family members and loved ones. The eggplant emoji, for example, is often used as a stand-in for the lack of an official penis emoji — especially among gay men when they send sexually explicit texts to each other. In this latest video from Davey Wavey, the gay YouTuber teams up with fellow YouTuber Machaizelli to present ” The Eggplant Emoji YouTube Trailer ,” a spoof on classic horror movie trailers, centered around miscommunication regarding the eggplant emoji and what it really represents.

Your Phone Is Likely the Reason for These Bad Habits

Last year I lost my phone on a trip to China. I’d lost it before I’d even gotten off the plane actually, and I spent two weeks exploring the country without it. I enjoyed the concept of phone-free living so much that I didn’t bother getting a new one when I got home. I then wrote about my experience in this post . The story got picked up by a national radio station and I was interviewed 19 times to talk about what it was like to live without a phone. People seemed to be really interested.

The Future Of Voting Could Be A Dystopian Nightmare

Enjoy the craziness of election season while you can: In the future, computers could become so adept at molding your behavior that you won’t really  choose who you vote for anymore. At least, that’s what one robotics expert at Carnegie Mellon University fears. Professor Illah Nourbakhsh  recently appeared on a panel called “Life in 2025” during a conference at MIT . He expressed concern that today’s germs of artificial intelligence technology could evolve into a full-blown disease that infects our political system.  Nourbakhsh envisioned a future where politicians control voters based on their data — the information they create when posting online, using a smartphone and so on.

NASA Time-Lapse Video Shows A Year In The Life Of The Sun

Catching a clear view of the sun at sunrise or sunset is a treat, but watching a full year of the sun’s activity in mere minutes? That’s scientific and cinematic magic. The time-lapse video , captured by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory spacecraft, shows the sun’s entire 2015 — and it’s awesome. The footage shows the sun in extreme ultraviolet , a wavelength that human eyes normally cannot see. This allows us to view all of the activity that occurs in the sun’s atmosphere, including solar filaments (arcs of plasma), coronal mass ejections (large explosions of magnetized plasma) and solar flares (flashes of light caused by the sudden release of energy).

The Problem With Millennials and Work Ethic

Dear Talia, After reading your post on Medium detailing the absolute struggle you dealt with while working for a Bay Area based corporation, I felt it imperative to address your concerns and above all, your obvious need for financial assistance. It sounds like you’ve hit some real post Haitian earthquake style hard times, so maybe some advice will help while you drink the incredibly expensive bourbon you posted on your Instagram account and eat that bag of rice, which was the only other thing you could afford! My name is Stefanie. I’m not much older than you. I will be turning the big 3-0 in three weeks time. It seems like a lifetime ago I sat in my sophomore year apartment crying about how I would never again be able to relate to “Baba O’Riley” or “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.” But here I am, having survived my 20s with some grace and a lot of humility. However, despite our less-than-a-decade difference in age, it seems we are worlds apart in the concept of work ethic
