A Day in the Life of a Computational Biologist

What are some of the interesting projects you have worked on in the field of Computational Biology? originally appeared on Quora – the knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights . Answer by Sebastian Raschka , Author of Python Machine Learning . Computational Biology PhD candidate at MSU, on Quora . Most of my other projects are concerned with large-scale virtual screening applications: In collaboration with labs that do experimental biology, we develop and apply methods to predict candidate molecules that either inhibit (or activate, depending on the project) an individual protein, in absence or presence of a protein crystal structure.

Snapchat Files For IPO That Would Be Biggest In Years For Tech

Snapchat has filed for an initial public offering, sources familiar with the situation said on Tuesday, which puts the messaging app a step closer to the biggest U.S. stock market debut since 2014. The Venice, California-based company could go public as soon as March and be valued at $20 billion to $25 billion, making it the largest IPO since Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd’s went public two years ago valued at $170.9 billion. It would be the largest U.S. technology IPO since Facebook Inc’s debut in 2012 with a value of $81.2 billion. Snapchat filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission under the U.S

Facebook, Google Take Small Steps To Stop Spread Of Fake News

Facebook and Google announced Monday that they were taking steps to restrict ads from fake news outlets after facing criticism that hoax stories helped swing the presidential election in favor of Donald Trump . Facebook said Monday that it would ban fake news sites from using its Facebook Audience Network, which allows websites to generate revenue   by including Facebook ads. Also Monday, Google said it would work to prevent websites selling fake news from using its AdSense advertising network. While both companies are taking a step in the right direction, the efforts won’t completely fix the problem of fake news stories bubbling up on the two major websites. “Facebook’s move doesn’t address the fake news that appears in users’ news feeds, the focus of criticism of the social network,” the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. It’s also not clear how the social network will identify what’s fake and what’s real.

Big Business Now The Only Thing Standing Between Trump And Climate Devastation

Microsoft announced on Monday that it has made its largest wind energy purchase yet. The tech giant bought 237 megawatts of wind energy to completely power its newly built datacenter in Cheyenne, Wyoming, a state where nearly 88 percent of electricity comes from heavy pollutant coal. The latest purchase brings Microsoft’s total wind power capacity up to 500 megawatts ― a significant number, but small when you consider that it’s less than one-eighth of what one nuclear plant produces. Last year, when the Redmond, Washington-based company publicized plans to open the datacenter, Wyoming Gov. Matthew Mead (R) touted  his state’s cheap electricity

Mark Zuckerberg Continues To Insist Facebook Could Not Possibly Have Influenced Election

Under increasing criticism, Mark Zuckerberg over the weekend again insisted that Facebook played no real role in influencing the outcome of the presidential election. A claim that’s been undercut by the company’s own employees in at least two recent media reports. “Of all the content on Facebook, more than 99% of what people see is authentic,” Zuckerberg wrote in a status update posted Saturday. “The hoaxes that do exist are not limited to one partisan view, or even to politics. Overall, this makes it extremely unlikely hoaxes changed the outcome of this election in one direction or the other.” Responding to a question in the comments, Zuckerberg said that the 99 percent number refers to all of the content posted to the social network. Critics called it a laughable data point.

Want Better Journalism? You Have To Support It.

This election will and should lead to an autopsy of the Democratic establishment , the media , and especially the polling and analytics field that duped us into a false sense of confidence. As a journalist, it’s disheartening that trust in the media has hit rock bottom. As an American, Donald Trump’s election has left my faith in humanity lacking. Both can be restored, but it’s on all of us to fix it. Some of the arguments I’ve seen for how election expectations were so wrong point the finger at an elite and urban-based media that’s woefully out of touch with the economic plight and political disillusionment of “real America”.

Facebook Temporarily Killed Off A Lot Of Its Users

There’s no worse way to find out you’re dead than through Facebook. Facebook killed me. pic.twitter.com/xrMW0QSc2j — Rowaida Abdelaziz (@Rowaida_Abdel) November 11, 2016 Numerous users of the site found that their personal pages had apparently been “memorialized”  — a designation normally reserved for the deceased — around 3:45 p.m. on Friday.

Is There Room to Disrupt the Cloud Industry?

Is the Cloud industry already dominated or does it have room for disruption? originally appeared on Quora – the knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights . Answer by Steve Herrod , Managing Director at General Catalyst, Former CTO of VMWare, on Quora . “Cloud” means different things to different people – in part thanks to the ” cloud washing ” that our industry is rife with (this author may be partly responsible for some of that. Sorry.) Just to set a foundation for discussion, the definition of “cloud” typically has two different axes: Where is it running it? If a company runs their own cloud, it is referred to as “private”
