The Facebook Video View Controversy

For the past year-and-a-half, we’ve heard the drumbeat: “Facebook Video is growing rapidly, as YouTube and others are being overrun by the social network.” The sheer speed of Facebook’s growth was stunning and took the marketing community by surprise. So, when David Fischer of Facebook confessed that they’d been over-reporting video views, marketers took a deep breath. Facebook shared in a blog post that it artificially inflated its metric for the average time users spent watching videos because it was only factoring in video views of more than three seconds. How big is this inflated metric? Turns out it’s huge. As reported in the Wall Street Journal, “Ad buying agency Publicis Media was told by Facebook that the earlier counting method likely overestimated average time spent watching videos by between 60% and 80%.” In a blog post , Facebook VP of marketing David Fischer said: About a month ago, we found an error in the way we calculate one of the video metrics on our dashboard – average duration of video viewed.

The AI Episode Of ‘Black Mirror’ Is Closer To Reality Thanks To Russian Coders

In “Be Right Back,” an episode of the British futurist drama “Black Mirror,” a woman named Martha loses her fiancée, Ash, in a car accident. The young couple had each been active social media users, and, in the world of the episode, that digital footprint enables Martha to recreate her dead loved one. After starting small, holding text conversations with the artificial-intelligence version of Ash, she moves on to phone calls and, soon, a life-sized android.  The episode aired just three years ago, but a Russian woman named Eugenia Kuyda has debuted a strangely similar project  ― without the androids ― detailed in a bittersweet feature published this week by The Verge.  Kuyda’s close friend Roman Mazurenko was killed in a Moscow hit-and-run car accident in November 2015. After his sudden death, Kuyda took advantage of resources she’d been using to build a messaging app to see if she could recreate her friend’s voice in text. With over 8,000 lines of text messages from Mazurenko donated from friends and family, Kuyda debuted  a digital version of her friend through her existing app , Luka, in May. Users could chat with Mazurenko, who was deeply involved in the tech sphere himself, by tagging @Roman.

Google moving into "Hardware" as the Internet of things Era takes hold

Google’s strategic move into selling own branded Mobile phones is another step in the merging of “Software plus Hardware” that Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and recently Facebook have realized at the making of the “Internet of Things” Era. This is the critical issue of not just providing the software and operating system but increasing the value in the devices that become the Interface to the Customer: the smart phone, the smart tablet/laptop of Microsoft Surface, the Smart Speaker of Amazon Echo and Alexa, and the Facebook Oculus Rift and Microsoft Hololens that are the new foundations of Natural Language speech recognition services and the VR Virtual Reality and AR Augmented Reality breaking now and into 2017 and onward. Google’s long-term market is changing , the advertising revenue from search engines while still strong is now seeing new ways to search via speech or Virtual image recognition and virtual interaction Google has been late to realizing perhaps the shift to software + hardware is where the Internet of Things may be shaping the market with the Connected Home, Connected Car and Connected Work through these devices. It’s all about “market marking” beyond just the big cloud data centers and big data analytics to how to build out the edge of the cloud network with all these potentially billions of connected sensors and devices. If the Mobile phone is becoming the “remote control to this world” and platforms the “fabric of social networks and connected experiences” then Google like others is rushing to get into this space with stronger software and hardware offerings — This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms.
