More Biometric Scanning Is Coming Soon To U.S. Airports

To many travelers, airport security  is already invasive enough . But things will get even more intense soon if Donald Trump  has his way. In both his original and revised executive orders on travel , the president called for quicker work  on  biometric exit , a program that aims to better verify international travelers’ identities by collecting data like fingerprints, face scans and eye scans as they leave the country. Ramped-up data collection like this  is already happening  in some U.S. airports, and will appear in more locations   next month.  Airports have been collecting biometric data on most non-U.S. citizens for years by  taking photos at Passport Control  when they enter the country and checking them against government databases, Jennifer Gabris, a Customs and Border Protection spokeswoman, told HuffPost. The catch is  there’s no photo taken when travelers leave, and not all visa holders turn in the required departure form.

How To Bring Satellite Data Back Down To Earth

By Sarah Scoles for WIRED . Christopher Richins has had a somewhat obscure to-do item — “start a multinational space company” — on his list since he was a young guy. Back then, he worked for Sea Launch, a company that put Russian and Ukrainian rockets on Norwegian ships, sent the ships sailing toward the equator, and launched satellites from the middle of the ocean. “This was the coolest, most James-Bond thing I’d ever heard of,” Richins says.

Don’t Open That Google Doc Unless You’re Positive It’s Legit

By Lily Hay Newman for WIRED . If you get a Google Doc link in your inbox today, scrutinize it carefully before you click — even if it looks like it comes from someone you trust. A nasty phishing scam that impersonates a Google Docs request has swept the internet today, including a decent chunk of media companies. You’ve heard “think before you click” a million times, but it really could save you from a whole lot of hassle. Google has taken steps to neutralize this particular phish. The company said in a statement that it has “disabled offending accounts

The One Hire Facebook Really Needs To Make To Curb Violence

By Emily Dreyfuss for WIRED . On Wednesday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said his company will hire 3,000 people to watch for violent footage posted to the site. The decision comes after two horrific videos caught global attention in recent weeks: a man uploaded a video of himself murdering a grandfather in Cleveland, and a man in Thailand hanged his infant and then himself in a Facebook Live video the authorities saw too late. They will be joining the 4,500 people Facebook already pays to screen videos flagged by users around the world as inappropriate — work that in theory could at the very least prevent such atrocities from lingering on the site. It’s a commendable response, albeit of the brute-force, ex post facto variety.

This Magazine Is For Girls Who Unapologetically Love Science

After realizing most magazine stands lacked publications for girls who are passionate about science, a mom of two has started one that encourages them to “embrace their intelligence.” Sarita Menon is the founder and editor of Smore magazine , which inspires girls to pursue science and other related fields. Last year, Menon saw a photo that went viral on social media that showed the cover of a Boys’ Life magazine next to the cover of a Girls’ Life magazine. According to the covers, boys were interested in exploring their future, while girls were into fall fashion and their “dream hair.” That side-by-side image stuck with Menon and inspired her to start Smore. “The picture clearly showed how we are sending completely different messages to our boys and our girls in terms of what they should aspire to,” she told HuffPost.

Thank You For Facing Addiction, Mark Zuckerberg. Now, Let’s Get To Work.

In a powerful, touching post this weekend, the CEO of Facebook highlighted the opioid addiction crisis that is impacting communities across America. “Treating an epidemic like this is complicated and the people I met say it’s years from even peaking,” he said. “But they also came back to the importance of connection and relationships.” By bringing his powerful voice to this cause at a critical time—when so many people are losing their lives to addiction—Zuckerberg is helping to change the conversation and prompt solutions to be brought to the forefront urgently. Zuckerberg met with families of loss and people in recovery in Dayton, Ohio on Saturday. They talked about how important it is to reduce the stigma that comes from being touched by addiction, and how criticizing or condemning people who have a substance use disorder makes it so much harder for them to seek treatment. The first-ever Surgeon General’s report on addiction, Facing Addiction in America , confirmed that only 1 in 10 people receive any kind of specialty treatment, but that “substance use disorders can be effectively treated, with recurrence rates no higher than those for other chronic illnesses such as diabetes, asthma, and hypertension.

Facebook Knows When Teens Feel ‘Worthless,’ Swears It Doesn’t Use That To Sell Ads

Facebook sees all ― including teenagers’ feelings of inadequacy. That’s according to a confidential report a Facebook employee  leaked to The Australian  about a project at Facebook Australia that identifies insecure young people and strategizes how advertisers might target them. According to the Australian, the report says Facebook can pinpoint “moments when young people need a confidence boost” or feel “worthless,” as well as employ image-recognition software to glean uncomfortable insights about users from the photos they post on Facebook and Instagram, which Facebook owns. The Australian says Facebook is drawing its insights from a database of 6.4 million young people in Australia and New Zealand, ranging from high school students to young workers with an average age of 26. It’s unclear if Facebook has conducted similar research elsewhere
