Leaving The Misery Machine (Facebook)

“Man, you did it,” My friend Casey said. “I applaud you.” • • • He was referencing my leaving Facebook a month ago. He’s heard me mention wanting to leave many times over the past five years that we’ve known each other, with increasing frequency coming into the end of 2016. But he never thought I’d actually do it. Hell, I never thought I’d actually do it, to be honest

Astronauts Take Mannequin Challenge To New Heights In International Space Station

We got the whole crew together and took the #MannequinChallenge to new heights #Proxima pic.twitter.com/vlOglQ3lEh — Thomas Pesquet (@Thom_astro) December 29, 2016 It’s hard to look frozen when you’re floating, weightless in space. But the crew aboard the International Space Station somehow managed to do it — and in spectacular style. European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Pesquet tweeted a video Thursday of himself and four colleagues doing the mannequin challenge, one-upping everyone on the planet who’d ever attempted the viral craze in the process. Some clearly are hooking a foot or hand over some solid support to help them remain motionless as the cameraman floats by in the French astronaut’s video, above. Bizarrely, a crewmember holding a camera is also part of the outer-space “tableau.” “We got the whole crew together and took the # MannequinChallenge to new heights,” crowed Pesquet  on Twitter in English and French. “The result is kind of sci-fi spooky don’t you think?” he wrote on Facebook. Pesquet said the crew had their “bit of fun in microgravity” on their day off Sunday.

Why I’m Slowly Leaving WordPress To Blog At Medium

Hmm, how do I put this? I’m in love with a platform called Medium. What’s Medium? It’s kind of like a mash-up of Twitter and WordPress, where you can import stories, write stories, and follow other writers you enjoyed reading. The best part is, it’s taking off. VentureBeat reported a month ago that Medium grew by 140% this year , attracting 60 million monthly visitors.

Has the Term ‘Engineer’ Lost Its Value?

Is the term “engineer” losing its value? originally appeared on Quora – the knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights . Answer by Kynan Eng , Tech startups & research: neuromorphic engineering, mobile big data, VR, on Quora : The etymology of the word “engineer” has seen the usage of the word expand and change over the years: 1300s: maker of war machines 1400s: inventor, designer 1600s: builder of public works (civil engineer) 1832: steam locomotive driver 1900s: clear split into multiple overlapping disciplines (mechanical, civil, chemical, aerospace, biomedical, electrical, materials) 1980s: addition of software, meaning the design and implementation of computer programs 1990s: addition of dealing with software systems at an abstract level (installation and maintenance of computer systems) As of the 1950s onwards, the general definition of engineering could be summarized as a technical job needing differential equations and control systems theory to do it properly. The problem is that software engineering, while clearly a highly-skilled profession, does not require differential equations (unless you are working on particular algorithms). Hence the argument with the other disciplines. So what happened to the “engineering” in software

Why Won’t Best Buy Let Me Return This Lemon?

Katherine Szczerbinski's Lenovo laptop is a lemon. Can she get the manufacturer — or Best Buy — to fix it? Question : I have several issues with my Lenovo Yoga laptop that I bought at Best Buy. I’m hoping you can help me, since I have been without use of my laptop for weeks. My problems started with a charger that didn’t work, a nonworking mute button and a broken screen. I sent my unit back to Lenovo for repairs, but they didn’t fix it.
