Facebook Cracks Down On 30,000 Fake News Accounts Ahead of French Election

Too late for the U.S. presidential election, Facebook is going after 30,000 phony accounts used to distribute fake news  in France, ahead of the national vote there. The company is using automated methods to help screen out the fakes, such as finding content repeated on hundreds of the phony sites. Facebook said in a statement Friday that it’s taking “decisive action” against the accounts, presumably shutting them down. “While these most recent improvements will not result in the removal of every fake account , we are dedicated to continually improving our effectiveness,” Facebook technical program manager Shabnam Shaik wrote in a post. The company is relying on “improvements to recognize these inauthentic accounts more easily by identifying patterns of activity without assessing the content itself,” Shaik added.

An iPhone Turned Up In This Guy’s Subaru Dashboard, Prompting The Most Entertaining Internet Mystery Of All Time

This is it. The most entertaining Facebook thread of all time. Oh, you disagree? Then please point me to a better (and true ) story than this one, prompted by a mechanic finding an old iPhone ― locked and stuck in airplane mode ― in a Subaru’s dashboard airbag compartment (yep, you read that correctly). Then the car owner goes on a tireless search to figure out not only who it belongs to, but how it got there.

When Being Truly Audience-First Means Giving Content A Back Seat

Welcome to HuffPost’s Keeping It 100. From infusing our culture with data to figuring out how to reach Gen Z and cultivate niche distributed communities, we’ll give you an inside look at the hits and misses of HuffPost’s biggest bets.  Over the past year, HuffPost has transitioned from a content-first organization to an audience-first one ― zeroing in on who we’re serving at every step of the editorial process. Our latest experiment took this one step further, going so audience-first that content creation wasn’t even a part of the road map for the first few months. To truly be 100 percent audience-first, we decided to invest in niche Facebook communities as appendages of the HuffPost brand. The pages wouldn’t push HuffPost content or even bear the HuffPost name.

Would You Fly In A SpaceX Rocket?

If nothing else, Elon Musk, the mastermind behind Tesla Motors, SolarCity, and SpaceX, knows how to get attention. Recently, he made headlines when he revealed that next year SpaceX, the private space exploration company he founded in 2002, intends to fly two paying customers on a mission that would travel to the moon, orbit the moon without landing, and then return to land on Earth. A private space company has never sent a manned mission into space. The main reason is obvious. No private space company has the history needed to guarantee the safety of the passengers, whether they are astronauts or, in the case of SpaceX’s proposed mission, mega-wealthy customers

Facebook Releases New Tools To Combat Revenge Porn

On Wednesday, Facebook unveiled a handful of new tools aimed at reducing the spread of so-called “revenge porn” on the site, a category  Mark Zuckerberg defined as “any intimate photo shared without permission.” To be clear, Facebook has never permitted this type of content, and generally restricts nudity of all sorts. These new tools simply enable Facebook to remove a photo faster when a user reports it.  Critically, they will also automatically flag the photo if it’s uploaded again elsewhere, thereby keeping Facebook censors from playing an endless game of whack-a-mole and scrapping photos one by one. “If someone tries to share the image after it’s been reported and removed,” Facebook Head of Global Safety Antigone Davis explained in a blog post on the subject, “we will alert them that it violates our policies and that we have stopped their attempt to share it.” The company said it typically also disables the accounts of people who share intimate images without permission. A spokesperson told The Huffington Post the initiative arose from a series of roundtables with women’s safety organizations. A 2016 study by the Data & Society Research Institute and the Center for Innovative Public Health Research found one in 25 Americans has been a victim of revenge porn, with that number skyrocketing to one in 10 women under the age of 30.

Wellness Apps Evade The FDA, Only To Land In Court

By Megan Molteni for WIRED . Smartphone apps are great at lots of things, from sending selfies, to solving late-night taco cravings. And even if they occasionally fail, the stakes are usually low — unless you consider being carnitas-less at 2:00 AM a life-threatening situation. The exception is with apps that claim to measure your heart rate, monitor your blood pressure, improve your memory, coordination, or vision. These apps aren’t offering diagnoses, but they do give users an impression about their health. And for the most part, the FDA lets these apps run wild, not requiring them to go through any rigorous vetting process to ensure they are both safe and effective

Silicon Valley’s Plot To Reinvent The Dreaded Conference Call

By David Pierce for WIRED . Stepping into one of the “project rooms” at speaker-maker Sonos’s office in downtown Boston is like opening a teleportation portal. The large, messy space, cluttered with half-built soundbars and heaping piles of screws, almost exactly replicates a room 3,000 miles away in Santa Barbara. Two screens hang on the wall of each one, displaying live feeds from both offices. Microphones around the room make it impossible to even whisper without being heard across the country; a surgical camera hanging overhead can zoom in on tiny screws anywhere on the table.
