Germany Considers Fining Social Media Sites For Hate Speech, Fake News

Germany is considering a crackdown on illegal social media content, including fake news stories, with threats to fine offenders up to $53 million if the lawbreaking material isn’t promptly removed. According to a law proposed Tuesday by German Justice Minister Heiko Maas, social media sites would be required to staff 24-hour helplines that would respond to user complaints flagging criminal content. The proposal could apply to hate speech, which Germany bans as criminal content, and to fake news articles if they’re slanderous, defamatory or libelous, Maas said, according to the BBC.  Anything deemed “obviously criminal” would have to be deleted or blocked within 24 hours, while less-glaring complaints would have to be resolved within seven days.  The proposal comes just one week after a Syrian refugee living in Germany lost a lawsuit against Facebook that sought the removal of a photo that wrongly identified him as a terrorist.

How Brianna Wu Went From Gamergate Victim To Congressional Candidate

Last week, Brianna Wu woke up to find a rock sitting on her living room floor, surrounded by shards of glass from the window it was thrown through. Sadly, for Wu, a video game designer and Head of Development at Giant Spacekat , this is nothing new. For almost three years, Wu has been the target of malicious abuse and harassment, predominantly online. In August 2014, Wu, along with other women in the video game industry like  Anita Sarkeesian and Zoë Quinn , became a target of the Gamergate controversy , in which some of the internet’s worst trolls unintentionally exposed the misogynist underbelly of the gaming community and its hostility toward women and minorities .  Gamergate was sparked after a smear campaign, led by Quinn’s ex-boyfriend, resulted in vicious online attacks against Quinn. Wu and Sarkeesian, who were both outspoken critics of the treatment of women in video games themselves and within the gaming industry, became targets soon after.  What at first looked like disagreement about the culture of the gaming community quickly revealed itself as a thriving microcosm of misogyny and rape culture: Wu, Sarkeesian and Quinn were (and continue to be) threatened with rape and murder, stalked, doxxed, and harassed.  The women found little to no support from law enforcement.

Mark Zuckerberg On Lack Of Diversity In Tech: ‘That’s Our Problem To Figure Out’

Mark Zuckerberg believes it’s up to tech companies themselves to diversify the white, male-dominated industry. The Facebook CEO joined students at North Carolina A&T, a historically black college and university (HBCU), to kick off the chancellor’s speakers series on Monday. During the discussion, which was streamed live from his page , a student asked Zuckerberg how he plans to make his company more inclusive. She also asked what people of color can do to get jobs in those non-inclusive spaces. He told her that was the onus is on tech companies to fix the problem.  “Frankly, I think that’s our problem to figure out,” he replied

Dakota Access Protesters Fighting Warrant To Search Their Facebook Accounts

An investigation into a traffic pileup at a protest last month in Washington state has led to a fight over a search warrant that targets the private Facebook accounts of  Dakota Access Pipeline  critics. Attempts by Whatcom County officials to retrieve private messages, log-in history and other account information for members of the Bellingham #NoDAPL Coalition have opened up th court battle.  The American Civil Liberties Union of Washington is trying to quash the warrant on behalf of the Facebook users. The warrant is “ an overbroad and unconstitutional request for private data ,” according to an ACLU motion filed this week in Washington state Superior Court. Providing authorities with the requested data violates First Amendment freedoms of speech and association, and Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable search, the ACLU motion said.  If upheld after a hearing on Tuesday, the search warrant would affect a wide range of people who posted to the #NoDAPL coalition page from Feb. 4-15 or simply interacted on Facebook with people who “liked” the group during that period. The number of users potentially affected is easily in the hundreds.  Boston College law professor Robert Bloom told The Huffington Post that the search warrant “looks a little troubling.” The request from Whatcom County officials “needs to be specific so police can’t go rummaging around, so to speak,” he added.  The dispute over the search warrant originated with an investigation by the Whatcom County prosecutor and sheriff’s office into a protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline that blocked part of an interstate highway in Bellingham in February.  About 100 demonstrators obstructed several lanes for more than an hour, causing a 4-mile traffic jam Feb. 11, according to The Bellingham Herald

This Is A Story About ‘This Is Sparta!’

There was once a time when “This is Sparta” was arguably one of the more boring phrases in the English language ― reviewed on a projector that’s lightbulb always seemed to be dying during high school history class. If you went to high school in the late 2000s, you likely witnessed the tidal wave moment when the phrase rose from seemingly nothing to a generational obsession. The movie  “300” debuted 10 years ago on March 9, 2007. It went on to gross nearly half a billion dollars worldwide, but its true accomplishment was domination over the American teen lexicon. The movie was intentionally ridiculous and bombastic, which led to it being, for a time, infinitely quotable.  The most memorable scene came when the protagonist, King Leonidas of Sparta (Gerard Butler), declines peace with the Persians by kicking their messenger into a giant man-made hole while screaming ― you guessed it ― “This is Sparta!” A whole industry sprouted up, parodying and referencing the movie. The horribly reviewed “Meet the Spartans” was a 2008 movie in the vain of the satirical “Scary Movie.” Despite getting a 2-percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes , it earned nearly $85 million in the box office as “300” held onto culture.

You Thought Tech Bros Were Bad

This column originally appeared in Emily Peck’s newsletter, a weekly email that looks at the convergence of women, economics, business and politics. Sign up here .  Welp, you thought Silicon Valley bros were bad. But if you’re looking for the headquarters of the modern-day  He-Man Woman Hater’s club , it’s the U.S. Marines you’re after.   Apparently 30,000 of them were members of a closed Facebook group where they’d share nude photos of female marines, the MarineTimes first reported. Sometimes nude pics were accompanied by a woman’s name and rank.
