Facebook Raises The Bar For Supporting Grieving Employees

In one very heartfelt swoop, Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg has raised the bar on a very important employment benefit most people hope they’ll never use: paid bereavement leave ― the time off you need to recover from the loss of a loved one. The tech giant will now provide 20 days of paid bereavement leave, double the amount previously given. Sandberg knows from whence she speaks. She went back to work 10 days after her husband, Dave Goldberg, died in 2015.  “This is personal for me,” Sandberg said when making the announcement at the Makers conference , a women’s leadership event sponsored by AOL, the parent company of The Huffington Post. “ I lost my husband very suddenly . Facebook provided leave and flexibility, and now we’re doing more.”  Facebook employees will also be able to take off three additional days if they need to take care of family member with a short-term illness, and six weeks if they need to provide longer-term care for ailing family members.

Elizabeth Warren Puts GOP On Notice: This Is Just The Beginning

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) is putting newly confirmed Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Republican senators who approved him on notice.  GOP lawmakers on Tuesday night invoked Rule 19 , which forbids speaking ill of other senators, to silence Warren as she attempted to read a letter from Coretta Scott King criticizing Sessions.  “She was warned. She was given an explanation,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said. “Nevertheless, she persisted .” Less than 24 hours later, Warren fired off a blistering series of tweets noting that Sessions is no longer a senator ― and no longer protected by Rule 19.  She also had a warning for her GOP counterparts who confirmed him.  Here’s what she said Wednesday evening:  I’m deeply disappointed that the Senate voted to confirm Jeff Sessions as Attorney General tonight. — Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) February 9, 2017 Deeply disappointed that the Senate confirmed an AG whose record does not show he will faithfully & fairly enforce the law

Twitter is all Bark and no Bite with $167million loss

The continued performance failure of $167million reported loss in last three months of 2016 and a stagnant 4% growth of total users at Twitter is part of an underlying structural problem and culture at the company inability to move beyond its early foundations of a simple microblog. The use of Twitter by Trump for his political campaign is just a side show when it’s 319 million user base are simply not engaged enough in direct revenue generation for the company. Perhaps it is Twitter unique position as a social media voice that is easy to use, after all it is just 140 characters right? But this is missing the point abut its role as a monetizable mediator to other industries and social groups that as yet seems to be an unfulfilled dream. Twitter management while investing is media streaming and niche changes to the website, have failed to grasp the opportunities that Facebook and LinkedIn have in monetizing their users by advertising or selling subscriptions for communities and lifestyles

Video Views – Has Facebook Been Lying To Advertisers?

Early news from Nielsen in Australia has perhaps revealed the true performance of Facebook’s video ad streaming. A recent change in the way Nielsen  reports video views indicates that Facebook has been hugely inflating the volume of actual video streams on their platform. It flies in the face of many commentators who claimed Facebook was taking over YouTube as the main video consumption platform, and is sure to make all Facebook advertisers re-examine their media plans in 2017. This news has come after a recent announcement that Facebook had  overestimated the length of its video views by possibly 80% last year. This had huge repercussion for advertisers, who felt they were guided by unreliable metrics and who potentially spent a lot more budget on Facebook than they would have knowing the true impact.

3 Ways That Limiting My Phone Use Reconnected Me with My Family

Now that my son is a sophomore in college, he’s had some mental and physical distance from us, giving him insightful and at times critical perspective on our household. It’s rewarding when he appreciates home cooked meals, fresh smelling towels and sanitary conditions, but it’s frustrating when he points out flaws. Especially mine. “Mom, seriously! Can you put your phone down?

‘Fake News’ And Runaway Technology

Societies are shaped by technology. That’s always been true.  Be it: fire, the wheel, fermented drinks, the stirrup, the printing press, the internal combustion engine, electricity, the computer.  The applications and management of technological innovation trace a more complex trajectory than the techniques themselves. Nothing is compelling or automatic. These days, the most radical technological innovations are occurring in the field of digital communications
