There’s A New App Called YayYo. It’s Like Uber, But For Empty Promises.

Ramy El-Batrawi has founded 27 companies that are now inactive or dissolved, hawking everything from relationship counseling to futures trading to van rentals to Alaskan fishing vacations, a HuffPost review of state records finds. He even ran a travel agency in Palm Beach, Florida, with a Saudi arms dealer involved in the Iran-Contra affair, and was named as a go-between for an offshore entity  listed in the Panama Papers. In 2010, the Securities and Exchange Commission barred El-Batrawi from being an executive in a publicly traded company for five years as part of the settlement over a $130 million stock fraud case against a company he led until it collapsed in 2001. Now that his prohibition period is over, El-Batrawi has something new to sell: shares in YayYo, a price-comparing ride-sharing app that doesn’t currently work and is pronounced like outdated slang for cocaine. The company, with El-Batrawi as CEO, is trying to sell $50 million in stock ― which it can do thanks to newly relaxed securities laws that let speculative startups raise money from mom-and-pop investors.

Mark Zuckerberg Is Making Good On His Wedding Promise To Priscilla Chan

Happy anniversary to Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan ! On Friday, the Facebook CEO and his wife ― a philanthropist and pediatrician ― celebrated their fifth  wedding anniversary. Zuckerberg marked the occasion with a sweet Facebook post (naturally!) that also told the funny story of how their wedding ended up falling just one day after the social media company went public back in 2012.  I can't believe it's been a year! And she kissed me on the cheek for the first time yesterday :). Here's to many more years of happiness and health for Max and all children around the world. A post shared by Mark Zuckerberg (@zuck) on Nov 30, 2016 at 12:46pm PST “Priscilla and I wanted a low key wedding so we decided to make it a surprise and have it in our backyard. I sent our friends and family an email telling them I was throwing a surprise party for Priscilla to celebrate her graduation from medical school. Since they thought it was a surprise for Priscilla, they kept it quiet

Jeff Goldblum Says He Was Almost The Voice Of Apple

Jeff Goldblum was almost Siri and we are shook about it. The “Jurassic Park” actor recently said in an interview with Australia’s “Today” show that Apple’s late CEO Steve Jobs attempted to convince him to become the “voice of Apple,” according to CNET . Really. “Steve Jobs called me up a few decades ago to be the voice of Apple,” Goldblum told interviewer Richard Wilkins. “That was early on, and I did not know it was Steve Jobs.” Siri can be really irritating when she goes off in your pocket accidentally, but if it was Jeff Goldblum talking to us, we probably wouldn’t hate it as much. If you’re thinking “Why Jeff Goldblum?” then you probably forgot he was actually an Apple ad man for a little while

Woman’s Anti-Gay ‘Last Man Standing’ Rant Causes Her To Lose Her Job

Fans of “ Last Man Standing ” were stunned last week when ABC announced the comedy series, which stars Tim Allen, would be canceled after six seasons.  Speculation over whether or not politics played a role in ABC’s decision to ax the show began to heat up after the May 10 announcement . After all, Allen is  an outspoken supporter of President Donald Trump , and has compared being a Republican in Hollywood  to “’30s Germany.” Among those who bought into the rumors was Debbie Odom Massey, who was the executive director of the Madison-Rivergate Chamber of Commerce in Madison, Tennessee. Massey blasted her “favorite” show’s cancelation in a May 11 Facebook post , calling the decision “discrimination” and a violation of free speech.  The post reportedly read as follows:   “I can’t believe that I am supposed to be ok with shows like Grays Anatomy or Nashville or any other show that promotes LGBT blah blah blah..,WHATEVER! Cramming same sex making out into our Homes! But I can’t watch MY FAVORITE show! ‘Last Man Standing’! Talk about discrimination!! ABC needs to listen to the majority ― not the 2% -Afraid of lawsuit? Maybe we should scream, riot, wine and create law suits against EVERYBODY that doesn’t make us feel good, then we can get our way!! ‘Last Man Standing’ also offered the counter viewpoint…it’s not like you didn’t hear the other side. It is obvious they wish to only present their views and only wish to INDOCTRINATE people. We live in a country of FREE speech, if we believe it we should practice it and not support those who suppress it!”  Though Massey appears to have deleted her post later that day, her words nonetheless sparked a firestorm of controversy.

This Refugee Is Building Homes Out Of Plastic Bottles

This story is part of a series on ocean plastics . In a refugee camp in the Sahara desert, one man is making homes more durable in the face of tough weather conditions ― and he’s using trash to do it. Tateh Lehbib Breica, a Sahrawi refugee living in a camp in Tindouf, Algeria, is building homes for other refugees out of plastic bottles filled with sand, according to the  United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) video  above that was posted last week. Breica lives in Awserd refugee camp, one of five camps around Tindouf where Sahrawi refugees have lived for over 40 years , according to a January UNHCR post. Thousands of Sahrawi people, an indigenous group of the Western Sahara , were displaced to Algeria in 1975 during the Western Sahara War, and many have remained there since, according to the BBC

Mass Hacking: Time To Go Off-Line

Last week’s mass cyber-attack could produce the wrong lessons. The immediate takeaway seems to be that large institutions need much better cyber-security systems. But there’s a much simpler and better solution: Vital systems that can’t withstand the catastrophic risk of malicious hacking should just go offline. Hackers will always be able to find ways of getting into networked systems. The fantasy of ever better cyber-security is delusional.
