Kelly Slater’s Perfect Artificial Wave Could Change Everything About Surfing

When world-famous professional surfer Kelly Slater unveiled his artificial wave pool in December after nearly 10 years of research and development , the entire surf world was stoked. This week, after Slater invited a group of professional surfers to try out what he has dubbed ” a freak of technology ,” it became clear the sport may never be the same. As wave after flawless wave rolled in, the surfers, including Carissa Moore, Nat Young, Stephanie Gilmore and Kanoa Igarashi, got some of the longest rides and most consistently perfect barrels we’ve ever seen. While the company has yet to disclose the pool’s location, Reddit users managed to find it  using Google Earth satellite imagery. They located the pool in Lemoore, California — about 100 miles from the coast. In the past, artificial waves haven’t met surfers’ expectations

Weekend Roundup: From Beijing to Moscow, a Digital Curtain Descends

In March 1946, Winston Churchill famously declared that an “iron curtain” had descended across the European continent, casting a decades-long chill between East and West known as the Cold War. A new chill is in the air once again as China and Russia seek to draw a new “digital curtain” across the world in a joint effort to thwart the Western web from penetrating their cultural space. If the arrival in Moscow last week of China’s Internet czar, Lu Wei, to advise his Russian counterpart on how to erect a “firewall” against the West is any indication, a new “Cominternet” for the 21st century seems to be in the works — analogous to the so-called ” Communist International ,” or “Comintern,” which linked communist parties around the world from Moscow to Beijing during the Stalin era. Writing from Moscow, Andrei Soldatov sees the Russia-China cybersecurity forum that convened last week as marking a shift in Vladimir Putin’s censorship strategy from “intimidation” to “technology” that fortifies net sovereignty against Western-dominated Internet companies and content. “Splinternet” author Scott Malcomson explains how Russia and China are cooperating to dismantle America’s dominance of the Internet. As these infographics surprisingly show, the U.S

Women in Tech Go Rogue at Collision Conference

Collision Conference , a tech conference from the producers of Web Summit , moved towards their 2016 event in New Orleans, La. with an intentional women in tech initiative in place as their small way of increasing female participation in the industry. 10,000 free tickets were gifted to female entrepreneurs across all of the organization’s events with a small margin allotted for Collision Conference, an offering that some considered both noble and relevant to the statistically undeniable. However, while their web copy claims that Collision desires “to inspire and connect female entrepreneurs, senior executives and leaders,” many female attendees felt the follow through beyond emailing free tickets to nominated women fell short of a true initiative. Meanwhile, other women did not feel the need to have a discussion about women versus men at all, and prefered to keep the dialogue focused on the startup environment and their roles simply as founders. The reality is only one female-focused session was planned by Collision

Here’s Why You Should Be Extra Careful Crossing The Street With Earbuds In

This guy needs a refresher on how to safely cross the street, preferably without his earbuds in. A man was almost knocked down by a motorbike after appearing to jaywalk in Manchester, England, last week. Dramatic video filmed on bike rider Chris Evans’ helmet camera shows the man crossing the road after the light turns green for the traffic: He then gets cut off by a car and turns back — but doesn’t spot Evans on his motorbike, and ends up just inches away from being struck. ” I thought it would be fine but he had his headphones in under his hood so he clearly didn’t hear my bike even though it makes quite a noise,” Evans told the Manchester Evening News. “When he moved back I thought I was going to hit him.

Dreaming the Virtual: Why Lucid Dreamers Should Steer the Digital Economy

Photo by Alice Popkorn Lucid dreaming is a hot topic. Within the last five years, The Atlantic has published two articles and a how-to video on the topic. Not to be outdone, Huffington Post published more than two dozen articles in 2015 alone. Beyond the flaky tomes that have lined the shelves of Barnes & Nobles’ New Age section for years, lucid dreaming is now the subject of substantial works in the philosophy of mind—most notably Evan Thompson’s Waking, Dreaming, Being and Jennifer Windt’s Dreaming .
