Sharing On Social Media Actually Boosts Your Memory, Study Finds

The first study to look at the effect of social media on memory suggests that maybe we all want to be sharing more.  Memory researchers have long-known that when people write about personal experiences, reflect on them or talk about them with others, they tend to remember those events much better, notes a press release on the study by Cornell University. Researchers asked 66 Cornell undergraduates to keep a daily diary for a week in which they briefly described the events that happened to them each day, excluding daily routines such as “had breakfast.” They noted whether they had posted the event on social media and rated the event’s personal importance and emotional intensity on five-point scales. At the end of the week and then again a week later, the students were tested on how many events they could recall. The researchers found that the online status of each event significantly predicted the likelihood of it being recalled at the end of both the first and second weeks. This was true even when they controlled for the personal importance and emotional intensity of the events. In other words, events posted online were more likely than those not posted online to be remembered over time, regardless of the characteristics of the events, noted the press release .

Florida Man Blames Samsung Galaxy Phone For Setting Jeep Ablaze

In Nathan Dornacher’s words, he didn’t get the barbecue he was expecting this Labor Day weekend. The St. Petersburg, Florida, man was running errands with his wife and daughter Monday when he says his Jeep suddenly burst into flames while parked in his driveway. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but he now suspects his cell phone, a recently recalled Samsung Galaxy Note 7  that had been charging inside the SUV, is to blame. “That’s the last thought in my head, that a brand new device, something as simple as a phone is going to burn down my car, my house, or hurt a family member,” he told Fox 13 News of his initial surprise. But now he said he’s pretty much convinced

Motorola and Hasselblad Team Up with 10X Zoom Phone Camera

Most people these days are more than happy with their cell phone cameras, but some of us still carry around digital cameras because of better lenses, better sensors and — very important — optical zoom. But now Motorola, a subsidiary of Lenovo, has a smart phone with an optional snap-on camera with a 10x zoom. And that camera is from Hasselblad — a legendary high-end camera maker who’s camera was used by astronaut Buzz Aldrin to snap a picture of his colleague Neil Armstrong on the moon. The camera, called Hasselblad True Zoom , is one of Moto Mods that also includes snap on JBL speakers and an “Insta-Share” projector. In addition to the zoom, the camera has a 12 megapixel sensor, a Xenon flash and allows you to shoot in RAW format to give photographers a great deal of flexibility when it comes to lighting and other controls after the picture has been shot.

Virtual Reality’s Distribution Frontier Is Heating Up

By Noah J. Nelson ( @noahjnelson ) One of the more interesting things about virtual reality is that it is going to be the first consumer medium whose distribution platform is native to the internet. Oh sure, websites are native to the internet, but the web pages of which they consist are riffs on print pages with embedded elements. We saw plenty of those during the CD-ROM era of multimedia efforts. While every other form of media–from music to video games to movies–have developed distribution ecosystems to either supplement or replace their traditional channels VR is starting online by default
