The FBI Is About To Get The Power To Hack Millions Of Computers

WASHINGTON — Congress had six months to debate granting President-elect Donald Trump’s FBI new legal powers to hack millions of computers, and Republican leaders objected to doing so on Wednesday. That means that starting Thursday, a Department of Justice official will be able to go to a single judge, assert that a computer crime may involve millions of networked devices, and get a warrant that lets the FBI hack all of those devices. According to three senators who tried to put the brakes on that new authority Wednesday so Congress could at least discuss it, there are no concrete assurances from law enforcement officials that privacy won’t be violated or that devices won’t be damaged. Nor was there any explanation of how authorities will hack Americans’ wired equipment. “At midnight tonight, this Senate will make one of the biggest mistakes in surveillance policy in years and years,” said Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), who tried with Sens.

When police in Gardner, Kansas, received reports of a mountain lion in the city’s Celebration Park, they set up a couple of trail cameras at night to try and confirm the sightings. They didn’t capture the majestic feline in action, but they did catch some, uh, other stuff. “We now have another different concern,” the department wrote in a Facebook post Monday. “We are attempting to identify some of the wildlife and activity in these images.” Let’s see if we can help them out.

Google Is Bringing Back Image Sitelinks

Google have unveiled a new beta product called “Visual Sitelinks” for mobile search ads. The new feature shows a series of swipeable images below search ads on mobile that link to deeper pages in the advertiser’s site. The feature is technically a comeback of sorts for Google – they tested something similar in 2013 with Image Extensions, which allowed advertisers to place their own relevant images on text ads on desktop. But this new feature is just for mobile – Google’s now preferred channel – with images in a carousel format that allow users to swipe through before clicking. The format has been tested in the US for the last few months and has now just recently arrived in other English language regions

Hillary Clinton Has Grounds To Challenge Election Results, Activists Say

A group of computer scientists and election lawyers are urging Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton to challenge her election loss, saying they have evidence the results in three key battleground states were compromised. According to New York magazine’s Gabriel Sherman , the activists say electronic voting systems in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania produced discrepancies that hurt Clinton.  The academics presented findings showing that in Wisconsin, Clinton received 7 percent fewer votes in counties that relied on electronic-voting machines compared with counties that used optical scanners and paper ballots. Based on this statistical analysis, Clinton may have been denied as many as 30,000 votes; she lost Wisconsin by 27,000. Clinton needed to win all three states for an election victory. Wisconsin and Pennsylvania went for Donald Trump by the smallest margins of all the states that he won. The race in Michigan hasn’t been certified, but the state is likely to go to Trump.

Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg Finally Details Fake News Countermeasures

Facebook Inc, facing withering criticism for failing to stem a flood of phony news articles in the run-up to the U.S. presidential election , is taking a series of steps to weed out hoaxes and other types of false information, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post Friday evening. Facebook has long insisted that it is a technology company and not a publisher, and rejects the idea that it should be held responsible for the content that its users circulate on the platform. Just after the election, Zuckerberg said the notion that fake or misleading news on Facebook had helped swing the election to Donald Trump was a “ crazy idea .” Zuckerberg then said last Saturday that more than 99 percent of what people see on Facebook is authentic, calling “only a very small amount” fake news and hoaxes. But in his Friday posting Zuckerberg struck a decidedly different tone. He said Facebook has been working on the issue of misinformation for a long time, calling the problem complex both technically and philosophically.
