Facebook Prioritizes What Makes You ‘Sad’ Or ‘Angry’ Over What You ‘Like’

Facebook just revealed a really intriguing secret behind their “like” button options. The company’s algorithm weighs your “reactions” to posts ― love, haha, wow, sad and angry ― over just regular “likes” to determine what sort of content to put in your News Feed. In conjunction with the first anniversary of reactions, Facebook has determined over the last year that if someone takes the extra step to select a reaction, it’s “an even stronger signal that they would want to see that type of post than if they left a Like on the post,” a spokesperson told us. Strangely, all reactions are weighted the same, which means the News Feed prioritizes things you “love” equally to things that make you “angry” or “sad.” And it prioritizes all of those over things you merely “like.”     So, if you wondered why you were constantly seeing that random high school friend’s wedding photos, it’s probably from that time you were scrolling through Facebook after a night out and felt particularly generous with your “love” on their engagement photos. H/T Mashable — This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms. It may be used for personal consumption, but may not be distributed on a website.

If You Have One Of These Toys In Your House, You May Want To Stop Using It

Sloppy data security practices at a toy company that sells a line of internet-connected stuffed animals has exposed the personal information of more than 800,000 customers, and some 2 million voice recordings ― many of them from children. The toy animals, manufactured by CloudPets , have the ability to store and replay voice messages sent to them via the internet. Ideally, that means traveling parents ― for instance, a deployed military member ― could send a heartfelt message to their child’s teddy bear at home, to be replayed when their child interacts with the bear: But since at least Christmas Day of last year, information on the CloudPets server ― including customers’ login and password information and voice recordings ― was stored in an exposed database easily accessible to anyone on the internet who knew where to look. Online security expert Troy Hunt is one of the first to have noticed the issue . He and several others attempted to alert CloudPets to the security oversight numerous times, yet never heard back.

Elon Musk Is Sticking With Trump For SpaceX Contracts

These are troubling times for Elon Musk. Last week, Tesla, his electric car manufacturer, announced the company’s latest round of bad financial news; for the fourth quarter of 2016, Tesla lost 69 cents a share, a larger loss than Wall Street analysts had expected. Even more troubling, Chief Financial Officer Jason Wheeler announced he would step down in April, continuing a trend of, according to one financial outlet, “ executives ….leaving the company in droves.” With Tesla looking at more financial losses in the future, Musk revealed that to avoid getting “close to the edge,” which would “probably not be the best thing for shareholders,” he intended to raise additional capital — yet again. Musk may need the money if the United Auto Workers gets its way and organizes Tesla’s currently nonunionized workers — a move vehemently opposed by Musk, who has gone so far as to denounce one Tesla worker’s allegation that he and his fellow employees sometimes face unsafe working conditions as “ morally outrageous .” Musk’s comment offended some progressives. Then again, ever since the election in November, the left has been disturbed by Musk’s apparent deference to President Trump

Google Doodle Celebrates Planetary Discovery In The Most Adorable Way

View post on imgur.com Google is celebrating this week’s planetary discovery with a home page doodle that’s out of this world. In an adorable cartoon, Earth is seen peering out into space with a telescope as the moon ― a.k.a. “Earth’s little buddy,” as Canadian  astronaut Chris Hadfield described it ― watches from behind. That’s when Earth comes across one lone exoplanet smiling back at it, leading to an ambush of six other cosmic characters. One even waves back.  The colorful doodle, which was crafted by Nate Swinehart , graced the home page one day after NASA announced the discovery of seven exoplanets some 40 light-years away, part of what scientists have named the TRAPPIST-1 system ― after the TRAPPIST telescope that found them.

Facebook Donates Some $100,000 To CPAC, Reminding Users Again That It’s Not Liberal

Facebook and the Conservative Political Action Conference are in a relationship. It’s complicated. A Facebook spokesperson confirmed to HuffPost Wednesday that it is helping to underwrite the prominent conservative gathering next week in Washington. This isn’t the social network’s first year at CPAC. But the 2017 event follows an election year in which Facebook drew fire from the right and the left over the role its vast platform plays in politics. This year CPAC offers panels  like “If Heaven Has a Gate, A Wall, and Extreme Vetting, Why Can’t America?” and “Armed and Fabulous: The New Normal.” And it was all set to give a speaking slot to Milo Yiannopoulos and his racist, sexist and transphobic views before the far-right provocateur appeared to condone sex with 13-year-olds.

Uber Taps Eric Holder To Lead Investigation Into Sexual Harassment Claims

Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder will lead Uber ’s investigation into sexual harassment claims made by an ex-employee, the company told its workforce on Monday.  In an email obtained by Reuters , The Guardian and other news organizations, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick told his employees that Holder will lead an “independent review” of the claims that former Uber engineer Susan Fowler made in her now-viral blog post , as well as broader diversity issues at the company.  “It is my number one priority that we come through this a better organization where we live our values and fight for and support those who experience injustice,” Kalanick wrote in the memo, according to The Guardian . Fowler, who wrote about the year she spent working at the ride-hailing company, described an office culture that permitted rampant sexual harassment and gender discrimination, and a human resources department that did little to protect her and her female colleagues. At one point, Fowler says, she was told she was on “thin ice” and in risk of being fired if she continued to report cases to HR.  “I reported his threat immediately after the meeting to both HR and to the CTO: they both admitted that this was illegal, but none of them did anything,” Fowler wrote. Holder will be joined by his colleague Tammy Albarran, who is also a partner at the law firm Covington & Burling.

Why The Tech Industry Needs A “Day Without Immigrants”

By Amy Bhatt and Sareeta Amrute On #ADayWithoutImmigrants, workers who are vital to the operation of restaurants to agriculture to healthcare stayed home to protest the current White House’s appalling immigration policy agenda. Visibly missing from these protests were the scores of immigrants from India (though not all ) who keep the U.S. technology and finance sectors running as temporary workers. Why is this the case? Among Indians, there have been mixed responses about the White House actions, even though Indians are the second largest immigrant group after Mexicans and the fastest growing population of undocumented immigrants. In a 2016 campaign video, the current president declared that Indians and Indian Americans would have a true friend in the White House in Hindi
