The Crazy New Camera Tech That Made ‘Planet Earth 2’ Possible

By David Pierce for WIRED . Plenty of people know that leopards wander the streets of Mumbai, but few people ever see them. The elusive cats hunt at night, shrouded by darkness and the din of the city. That made Gordon Buchanan’s job tricky. The BBC sent Buchanan to Mumbai to film those cats for “Planet Earth II,” the epic nature documentary series that wraps up this weekend on BBC America. Filming wildlife isn’t like shooting a movie; the stars ignore your schedule and rarely appear when or where you want them to. You make your best guess about what might happen, set up your gear, and wait — sometimes for days. Buchanan did just that, erecting infrared “camera traps” throughout the leopard’s territory and checking them daily to discern its routine.

How To Protect Your iCloud Account Against Hackers

By Lily Hay Newman for WIRED . A hacker group called Turkish Crime Family says that it can access 250 million iCloud accounts, and will do so on April 7 to reset the password, locking people out of their accounts. They’ve even threatened to wipe people’s linked iPhones if Apple doesn’t pay up. And while it’s hard to tell how legitimate the threat is, their assertions make now as good a time to lock down your iCloud as ever.

Elon Musk Just Launched A New Startup

Does Elon Musk ever sleep? Probably. But whatever the amount, it’s likely diminished even more now, as the serial entrepreneur ― already busy with Tesla, SpaceX and Solar City, not to mention  The Boring Company  and Hyperloop ― has launched another company. His newest venture, called Neuralink, will research how to connect the human brain and computers by way of tiny, implanted electrodes. Max Hodak, a company insider at Neuralink, confirmed the news to the Wall Street Journal Monday, describing the state of the startup as “embryonic.” While Neuralink may be brand new, the concept it hopes to capitalize on is not. Musk spoke publicly about the idea at Recode’s 2016 Code Conference , describing a need for some sort of “neural lace” to enable direct human/computer interfacing.

Flying Taxis Could Soon Be Coming To A Sky Near You

Flying taxis and other futuristic passenger vehicles are about to take a giant leap out of science fiction and into reality. It’s not exactly the vision of the “ Back To The Future ” film trilogy, which predicted that by 2015 we’d fill the skies with flying cars and get around on personal anti-gravity hoverboards. But it turns out the movies may have just been a few years off. Singapore plans to have airborne cabs taking flight by 2030, according to the island city-state’s  Business Times  daily newspaper.

Senate Republicans Vote To Overturn Internet Privacy Protections

By David Shepardson WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Senate on Thursday voted narrowly to repeal regulations requiring internet service providers to do more to protect customers’ privacy than websites like Alphabet Inc’s Google or Facebook Inc . The vote was along party lines, with 50 Republicans approving the measure and 48 Democrats rejecting it. The two remaining Republicans in the Senate were absent and did not cast a vote. According to the rules approved by the Federal Communications Commission in October under then-President Barack Obama, internet providers would need to obtain consumer consent before using precise geolocation, financial information, health information, children’s information and web browsing history for advertising and internal marketing

Laptops, Other Electronics Banned On Some Flights To U.S.

The United States and United Kingdom have banned laptops, tablets and other electronic devices in the cabins of some flights from airlines operating in parts of North Africa and the Middle East. The U.S. ban, which affects devices larger than a cellphone ― including cameras, DVD players and electronic games ― went into effect Tuesday morning, senior Trump administration officials said in a conference call with reporters.  Federal officials, requesting anonymity, said intensifying threats from terrorist groups against commercial airlines and airports prompted the new rules. Officials from the Departments of Homeland Security and Transportation imposed the change, officials said in the conference call.  “Evaluated intelligence indicates that terrorist groups continue to target commercial aviation, to include smuggling explosive devices in various consumer items,” said a DHS fact sheet released Tuesday. “The record of terrorist attempts to destroy aircraft in flight is longstanding and well-known.” The rules affect passengers on direct flights to the U.S.
