Meet Jordan Reeves. She’s 11 years old and invented a prosthetic arm that shoots glitter. So, basically, she’s our new hero. Jordan was born with a left arm that stops above the elbow. Last January, she had the chance to attend a special camp, where she designed her flashy prosthetic arm. She named the effort Project Unicorn “because unicorns are awesome and sparkly,” Jordan’s mom Jen told The Huffington Post.

Outdoor Gear Show Folds Its Tents Over Utah’s Attacks On Public Lands

The state of Utah just let a very big fish off its hook. After months of sparring with Utah politicians over their repeated attacks on public land protections, including the creation of Bears Ears National Monument, the world’s largest outdoor retail show has decided to part ways with Salt Lake City and find a new home. The decision was announced Thursday after officials of  Outdoor Retailer , the Outdoor Industry Association, Patagonia, The North Face and REI participated in what clearly proved to be a fruitless teleconference with Utah Gov. Gary Herbert.  “Salt Lake City has been hospitable to Outdoor Retailer and our industry for the past 20 years, but we are in lockstep with the outdoor community and are working on finding our new home,” Marisa Nicholson, show director for Outdoor Retailer, said in a statement.  In its own announcement, the  Outdoor Industry Association , one of several sponsors of the biannual event in Salt Lake, said it is clear the Republican governor has a different perspective ― one it feels is “ bad for our American heritage ” and the 1,200 businesses it represents. “It is important to our membership, and to our bottom line that we partner with states and elected officials who share our views on the truly unique American value of public lands for the people and conserving our outdoor heritage for the next generation,” Amy Roberts, executive director of Outdoor Industry Association, said in a statement.  The biannual outdoor gear show has been held in Salt Lake for more than two decades. Each year, it draws hundreds of brands and suppliers, and roughly  40,000 visitors .

Samsung Plant Catches Fire Because Of — You Guessed It — Batteries

In what can only be described as a blaze of irony, batteries are being blamed for a fire that occurred Wednesday at a Samsung factory in China. Samsung, which last month blamed batteries for its exploding Galaxy Note 7 smartphones, said the fire broke out  in an area of the company’s Tianjin plant used to store faulty batteries and other waste products. The Wuqing branch of the Tianjin Fire Department reported in a verified social media post that it sent 110 firefighters and 19 trucks to the scene. The fire department specifically cited lithium batteries as the fuel behind the conflagration. The Korean company called the fire “minor” and said that it didn’t affect production. Video posted on social media showed black plumes of smoke  rising from a building.

Twitter is all Bark and no Bite with $167million loss

The continued performance failure of $167million reported loss in last three months of 2016 and a stagnant 4% growth of total users at Twitter is part of an underlying structural problem and culture at the company inability to move beyond its early foundations of a simple microblog. The use of Twitter by Trump for his political campaign is just a side show when it’s 319 million user base are simply not engaged enough in direct revenue generation for the company. Perhaps it is Twitter unique position as a social media voice that is easy to use, after all it is just 140 characters right? But this is missing the point abut its role as a monetizable mediator to other industries and social groups that as yet seems to be an unfulfilled dream. Twitter management while investing is media streaming and niche changes to the website, have failed to grasp the opportunities that Facebook and LinkedIn have in monetizing their users by advertising or selling subscriptions for communities and lifestyles

Video Views – Has Facebook Been Lying To Advertisers?

Early news from Nielsen in Australia has perhaps revealed the true performance of Facebook’s video ad streaming. A recent change in the way Nielsen  reports video views indicates that Facebook has been hugely inflating the volume of actual video streams on their platform. It flies in the face of many commentators who claimed Facebook was taking over YouTube as the main video consumption platform, and is sure to make all Facebook advertisers re-examine their media plans in 2017. This news has come after a recent announcement that Facebook had  overestimated the length of its video views by possibly 80% last year. This had huge repercussion for advertisers, who felt they were guided by unreliable metrics and who potentially spent a lot more budget on Facebook than they would have knowing the true impact.

‘Fake News’ And Runaway Technology

Societies are shaped by technology. That’s always been true.  Be it: fire, the wheel, fermented drinks, the stirrup, the printing press, the internal combustion engine, electricity, the computer.  The applications and management of technological innovation trace a more complex trajectory than the techniques themselves. Nothing is compelling or automatic. These days, the most radical technological innovations are occurring in the field of digital communications

We Tried Hater, The Dating App That Matches People Based On What They Hate

If you hate a lot of things (but don’t hate online dating) then this app might be for you. A new dating app called  Hater , which publicly launches February 8th (yes, just in time for Valentine’s Day), takes the concept of matching people based on things they both like, and flips it on its head. So if you don’t like long walks on the beach, drinking pina coladas, and taking walks in the rain, Hater will find you someone who despises those very things too.  The app allows users to swipe in four different directions to select whether they love, hate, like, or dislike a person, activity or concept.  Hater launched in beta in December, and the creators told HuffPost that about 10,000 people are using the app before its official roll out. In the name of journalism, we checked it out too. In playing around on Hater, the app’s design is sleek and chic.
