What It’s Like To Be Harassed Online Every Day As A Feminist

As a columnist who covers feminism for  The Guardian U.S. ,  Jessica Valenti has experienced it all when it comes to internet trolls . Especially since she’s received the most blocked comments in the online history of the publication. Valenti juggles between responding sarcastically to commenters and walking away from her computer altogether. While Valenti says she tries to “take some of that power away” from trolls by lightly making fun of them, it’s not easy receiving so many horrible comments on a daily basis. “Asking women to sort of remove themselves from public spaces — which is what the internet is now — it’s sort of like telling them if you don’t like being harassed stay off the street,” Valenti explains.  There’s no one thing that’s going to prevent women and girls from being harassed in any realm, but Valenti encourages young women to speak out about their experiences with online trolls and share their stories with other women.  Check out the video above for more of Valenti’s story.  — This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms.

‘Kraken’ Sea Monster Spotted Off Antarctica On Google Earth Is Almost Certainly Just A Rock

Is it a Kraken? The Loch Ness Monster’s icy cousin? Cthulhu waking up to run for president ?  Try none of the above.  A video going viral shows a “massive disturbance” in the ocean near Antarctica. Indeed, a quick search of Google Earth does reveal something  in a dark patch of sea near Deception Island: Measurements in the clip show the main portion of the “thing” to be about 75 feet across, creating a disturbance that is several hundred feet wide.  However, it’s not a sea monster. The waters in the area are known for rocks, and this one appears to be a feature called Sail Rock. Andrew David Thaler of Southern Fried Science posted a nautical chart showing the location of the rock as well as an image of the rock itself . The rock is nearly 100 feet tall, and it’s located in the same place as “the thing” on Google Maps.  Eagle-eyed Google Earth viewers occasionally spot unusual features on land and at sea, but most turn out to have mundane explanations. In one of the most widely publicized incidents, some people claimed that they had found evidence of the lost city of Atlantis . Google later said it was a data artifact, and “Atlantis” vanished from the images during a 2012 upgrade .  — This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms.

Big Tech Squashes New York’s ‘Right To Repair’ Bill

Major tech companies like Apple have trampled legislation that would have helped consumers and small businesses fix broken gadgets. New York state legislation that would have required manufacturers to provide information  about how to repair devices like the iPhone failed to get a vote, ending any chance of passage this legislative session. Similar measures have met the same fate in Minnesota, Nebraska, Massachusetts and, yes, even previously in New York . Essentially, politicians never get to vote on so-called right to repair legislation because groups petitioning on behalf of the electronics industry gum up the proceedings. “We were disappointed that it wasn’t brought to the floor, but we were successful in bringing more attention to the issue,” New York state Sen. Phil Boyle (R), a sponsor of the bill, told The Huffington Post Friday.

Weekend Roundup: The Orlando Shooting Reveals the Clash of Civilizations Within

It is de rigueur among tolerant liberals who don’t want to divide society further in our unsettling times to dismiss Samuel Huntington’s thesis of a ” clash of civilizations .” But Huntington was right — though perhaps in a way he didn’t grasp. The clash between the personal freedom of liberal modernity and traditional communitarian or tribal values doesn’t just, or even primarily, take place at the geopolitical level between the West and Islamic cultures, as Huntington saw it (He also a envisioned a clash with Hindu and Confucian-rooted Asian societies). It plays out within civilizations undergoing transition and in the very intimate interstices of the personal life of individuals. As globalization and the post-traumatic stress of military intervention bring immigrants to the West, and as Western mass culture spreads to all corners of the planet, the conflict between tradition and modernity seeps not only into each other’s territory but into the formation of personal identity itself.

Justin Bieber’s Songs Get The ’80s Reworking He Never Knew They Needed

Justin Bieber wasn’t around in the 1980s. But what if he had been? YouTuber TRONICBOX has reimagined how the Canadian pop star’s songs could have sounded if he’d been born a couple of decades earlier than his actual birth year of 1994. His smash hit ” What do you mean? ” is transformed into a breathy, synth-heavy love ballad — just watch out for that saxophone solo.  Check it out here: ” Love Yourself ” has also been given a phenomenal makeover. Forget the pared-back original.
