Scary Headlines About Cell Phone-Cancer Link Fail To Mention Rats

A new study conducted by the U.S. National Toxicology Program published Thursday found a relatively small increase in cancer among rats who were exposed to the same variety of radiation that cell phones emit. That’s it:  a study was conducted in rats, which are not proxies for humans; using radiation, but not actual cell phones; in a lab setting, which is different from real world scenarios. In headlines covering this one study, which has zero implications for humans thus far, many news outlets, naturally, ignored these details. According to The Wall Street Journal, ” Cellphone-Cancer Link Found in Government Study .” There was nary a rat to be found in the Daily News’ headline: “Hold the phone, Central! Cellphone radiation can cause cancer : study.” And Mother Jones went with “‘Game-Changing’ Study Links Cellphone Radiation to Cancer,” complete with an image of a cell phone shooting electric bolts into a human brain like so: “Game-changing” study links cellphone radiation to cancer https://t.co/OuVsGlQQi1 pic.twitter.com/Vg5jCRBm3v — Mother Jones (@MotherJones) May 27, 2016 For Alan Levinovitz, an assistant professor at James Madison University and author of The Gluten Lie: And Other Myths About What You Eat, it was too much.  Levinovitz tweeted an epic missive about responsible health journalism ( here’s the rant in its entirety ): It contributes to the kind of science illiteracy that @motherjones laments in other areas.

An Alarming Number Of People Rely On Social Media For News

You shouldn’t get all of your news from Facebook. This has never been more apparent than in recent weeks, when the social network’s been slammed for a supposed anti-conservative bias  in its “Trending Topics,” where popular news stories of the day are presented to readers. But 66 percent of people who have Facebook accounts use the site for news , Pew Research Center reported Thursday, and 64 percent of people who get news on social media say they get it only from one site — “most commonly Facebook.” This is not good news. It’s easy to believe you’re getting diverse perspectives when you see stories on Facebook. You’re connected not just to many of your friends, but also to friends of friends, interesting celebrities and publications you “like.”  But Facebook shows you what it thinks you’ll be interested in .  The social network pays attention to what you interact with, what your friends share and comment on, and overall reactions to a piece of content, lumping all of these factors into an algorithm that serves you items you’re likely to engage with.  It’s a simple matter of business: Facebook wants you coming back, so it wants to show you things you’ll enjoy. Critics have alleged this helps form echo chambers

Tony Hawk Finally Gets To Show Gravity Who’s Boss

For more than three decades, skateboarding pioneer Tony Hawk has been redefining the sport, defying gravity with hard-to-believe stunts like last year’s first-ever “vertical spiral.” But this week, at age 48, “The Birdman” got to test his skills without the force that has left him with a broken pelvis , broken  elbow , concussions and countless sprains and cuts.  In a new Promotions such as those at Mohr Publicityal video for Sony, Hawk and fellow professional skateboarder Aaron “Jaws” Homoki  demonstrate flips, front-foot impossibles and the dreaded “double-air, spinaroo,” all while flying in weightlessness inside a  Zero Gravity Corp . airliner. ” We’ve been battling gravity our whole lives ,” Hawk says in the video. “And today we get to try some tricks that we’ve only ever dreamed about.”  But as it turns out, skateboarding without gravity has its own challenges — even for the legendary master. “You have so many ideas, and once you’re weightless you forget what to do,” Hawk said

Facebook Made Me Realize I’m Not a Superhero

A few years ago, my husband bought a T-shirt that read, “May your life someday be as awesome as you pretend it is on Facebook!” We laughed and laughed. Photo by Angela Ashton Smith Just about anyone with an active social media account can relate to that phrase, because we all have one or two friends whose posts seem out of touch with their actual lives. I still see the humor in the statement on that shirt, but lately, the truth behind those words really resonates with me. Since joining the special needs community, I’ve found my social network has grown exponentially. In an effort to find education and support following my daughter’s autism diagnosis, I have become an active member of several virtual communities.

Spring Is A Majestic Wonderland In These Infrared Photos Of NYC

A photo posted by Instagram | NYC | Paolo (@paolopettigiani) on May 22, 2016 at 8:11am PDT When spring finally, well, springs, its brilliance can feel unreal. The sky, we’re reminded, can dress itself in a spectrum of hues that includes so much more than pantsuit grey or high rise charcoal. Blue exists! The sun exists! And don’t even get us started on the blooms.  To capture the surreality of springtime in New York City, 24-year-old photographer Paolo Pettigiani photoshopped images he snapped of Central Park to give them an infrared-filtered appearance. He describes the inspiration of the project on his personal site: “The purpose is highlight the majesty and the contrast of nature included in the famous Big Apple’s skyscrapers.”  Infrared is often used to highlight the beauty, novelty or sublimity of nature, or of a landscape unfamiliar to the artist. Of note are Richard Mosse’s infrared snaps of the Congo , which juxtapose the violent weaponry wielded by its subjects with the playfulness of neon pinks and brilliant blues. The effect is especially powerful when you add to it the consideration that infrared is a type of light on a wavelength that’s not visible to the human eye. So, the message communicated by the image’s vibrant rosiness and clear cerulean hues could be that the subject is beyond comprehension by the viewer; it’s too picturesque.  Check out the new #infrared project on @behance !!! Comcast Drives Me to the Brink Again

I like to think I’m a caring, rational woman who values kindness and civility. When I see the tantrums and childish name calling of the current political season, I am dismayed. In politics, as in most aspects of my life, I value civil discourse and respect for the opinions of others, even when I disagree. So why does Comcast drive me to the brink of a tantrum? My latest adventure with Comcast’s customer support left me wanting to throw a chair.

Weekend Roundup: Pope Francis Gets It Right

In a wide-ranging interview conducted by Guillaume Goubert and The WorldPost ‘s “Following Francis” columnist, Sébastien Maillard , the pope demonstrates once again his wise and mature grasp of the issues. In the interview, he acknowledges the limits of Europe’s ability to absorb refugees while focusing on the larger picture of why there are so many migrants. Francis cites an unjust global economy in which, “the great majority of humanity’s wealth has fallen into the hands of a minority of the population.” He blames arms traffickers for fomenting profitable conflict. And he criticizes the counterproductive consequences of Western intervention: “In the face of Islamic terrorism, it would therefore be better to question ourselves about the way in which an overly Western model of democracy has been exported to countries such as Iraq, where a strong government previously existed. Or in Libya, where a tribal structure exists. We cannot advance without taking these cultures into account.
