Your Media Business Will Not Be Saved

Cross-posted from Medium . A still from John Carpenter’s “Prince of Darkness” (it’s actually about Satan but whatever) Video will not save your media business. Nor will bots, newsletters, a “morning briefing” app, a “lean back” iPad experience, Slack integration, a Snapchat channel, or a great partnership with Twitter. All of these things together might help, but even then, you will not be saved by the magical New Thing that everyone else in the media community is convinced will be the answer to The Problem. I can tell you from personal experience over the last several months, having met with countless investors and leaders of media companies and editors and writers and technologists in the media world that there is a desperate belief that The Problem can be solved with the New Thing. And goddammit someone must have it in their pitch deck.

If Romeo And Juliet Used Tinder.. And Other Modern Twists On Classic Tales

Once upon a time, technology gave these iconic stories a serious twist.    Jazmin Batisti and Matt Lindley, who work for digital agency Verve Search, collaborated to create illustrations that show what some well-known novels would look like with the addition of modern technology. The result? “Modern Day Classics” that definitely don’t look like the stories we grew up with.  The series features some interesting remixes from Frodo using Google Maps to get to Mordor, to Willy Wonka getting candy ideas from Pinterest. Lindley told The Huffington Post that the illustrations were commissioned by publishing platform Flipsnack. Lindley helped come up with concepts while Batisti worked on the illustrations

Facebook Expands Its Legal Team

Facebook is expanding its legal team — perhaps just in time — and its newest hire comes from behind the bench. U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul Grewal will join the company in late June as its Deputy General Counsel, after serving in the North District of California since being appointed in December of 2010 — This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms. It may be used for personal consumption, but may not be distributed on a website.

One of today’s hottest trends is fostering innovation. It’s real important! There are books, conferences, certified experts and all sorts of things. Silicon Valley Enlisted To Fight North Carolina’s Anti-LGBT Law

The Human Rights Campaign is asking major tech companies to lend their support to the Justice Department’s case against North Carolina’s new anti-LGBT law. The LGBT equality group’s president, Chad Griffin, is in Silicon Valley meeting with dozens of companies that have expressed opposition to HB2 and asking them to sign an amicus brief in support of the Obama administration’s lawsuit.  “Governor McCrory has said he wanted to hear from businesses,” said HRC Communications Director Jay Brown in a statement. “To be clear, 200 some business leaders have already spoken out against HB2. And now, given their firm commitment to ensuring the best for their workforce and customers, we’re already seeing strong interest from dozens of companies in joining our amicus brief.”  An HRC spokesperson could not confirm which companies were contacted about the brief.  HB2, signed into law by Gov. Pat McCrory (R) in March, bars transgender people from using public bathrooms that match their gender identity, and prevents cities from establishing their own protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. On Monday, the Justice Department filed suit against the state of North Carolina, arguing that the measure violates federal civil rights law

High-Speed Hyperloop Hits 116 mph In 1.1 Seconds During First Public Test

Is this the future of travel?  Hyperloop One held the first public demonstration of its propulsion system on Wednesday, with a unmanned sled hitting 116 mph in just 1.1 seconds on a short stretch of track outside of Las Vegas.  Eventually, the company hopes the system will hit speeds of more than 700 mph.  According to The Wall Street Journal,  the hyperloop system doesn’t have brakes yet , so after the short test, the sled drove into a pool of sand: Hyperloop One is one of several companies working on transportation technology known as hyperloop, which will feature pods or cars racing through tubes in near-vacuum conditions with little to no air resistance to maximize efficiency and increase speed. Tesla cofounder Elon Musk released a white paper in 2013 in support of the technology. In an interview with All Things D, he called hyperloop ” a cross between a Concorde, a railgun and an air hockey table .” Earlier this week, the company announced that it had raised $80 million in financing and was changing its name from Hyperloop Technologies to Hyperloop One. The company is hoping its system will be operational within five years,  transporting passengers between Los Angeles and San Francisco in just 30 minutes , the BBC reported.  “When you think of hyperloop, you think maybe this is gonna happen years from now,” CEO Rob Lloyd said in a video released by the company. “It’s gonna happen much quicker than anyone imagines — and when it does, the world will never be the same .” Hyperloop One also said there will be more tests in the near future, and promised what it called a ” Kitty Hawk moment ” later this year. Kitty Hawk was the site where the Wright Brothers conducted their first successful flight  of the airplane in 1903

The Real Reason Uber and Lyft Left Austin

Right now, as a resident in Austin, Texas, I am unable to call an Uber or Lyft. As of 8 a.m. today, both companies have left the city of Austin with no public intention of ever coming back. The reason why the ridesharing companies left was because Proposition 1, a proposition that required a special election for the city of Austin on May 7, failed. The Daily Dot has had fantastic coverage on the issue, and summarizes it as follows: Prop

Weekend Roundup: From Beijing to Moscow, a Digital Curtain Descends

In March 1946, Winston Churchill famously declared that an “iron curtain” had descended across the European continent, casting a decades-long chill between East and West known as the Cold War. A new chill is in the air once again as China and Russia seek to draw a new “digital curtain” across the world in a joint effort to thwart the Western web from penetrating their cultural space. If the arrival in Moscow last week of China’s Internet czar, Lu Wei, to advise his Russian counterpart on how to erect a “firewall” against the West is any indication, a new “Cominternet” for the 21st century seems to be in the works — analogous to the so-called ” Communist International ,” or “Comintern,” which linked communist parties around the world from Moscow to Beijing during the Stalin era. Writing from Moscow, Andrei Soldatov sees the Russia-China cybersecurity forum that convened last week as marking a shift in Vladimir Putin’s censorship strategy from “intimidation” to “technology” that fortifies net sovereignty against Western-dominated Internet companies and content. “Splinternet” author Scott Malcomson explains how Russia and China are cooperating to dismantle America’s dominance of the Internet. As these infographics surprisingly show, the U.S
