When NASA astronaut Scott Kelly returns to Earth on Tuesday night after spending nearly an entire year in space, he will be leaving behind an awesome view of our planet — from the vantage point of the International Space Station. Before Kelly was launched to the space station last year, President Barack Obama commented in his 2015 State of the Union address , “Good luck, Captain. Make sure to Instagram it. We’re proud of you.” Indeed, Kelly not only posted his experiences on Instagram , but he also  tweeted  them and chronicled them on  Facebook  — reportedly sharing about 1,000 images with the world .

Brazilian Police Detain Facebook Executive For Failing To Meet Court Order

Federal police in Brazil apprehended the vice president of Facebook Inc for Latin America on Tuesday after the company failed to cooperate with judicial orders in an investigation of drug trafficking in Sergipe state. Court officials in Sergipe confirmed the detention of Diego Dzodan and police said he remained in custody for questioning in Sao Paulo state. A Facebook representative declined to comment immediately on the case. Privacy concerns have frequently put Facebook and other Internet giants at odds with Brazilian law enforcement seeking evidence in criminal cases, although the confrontations rarely rise to the prominence of Apple Inc’s current standoff with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation. In December, a judge suspended Facebook’s popular WhatsApp phone-messaging service in Brazil for about 12 hours after it failed to comply with two court orders to share information in a criminal case.

Parenting in the Digital Age of Pornography

Recently something unexpected, but groundbreaking caught people’s attention: As of spring 2016, Playboy magazine — the publication that titillated men and adolescent boys for decades — will no longer publish the nude and semi-nude photos of women that made it famous. “You’re now one click away from every sex act imaginable for free. And so it’s just passé at this juncture,” Playboy Enterprises CEO Scott Flanders told the New York Times . But we had a different reaction. As a culture, we have become desensitized to sex and violence due in large part to the ubiquitous portrayal of sexual violence in video games, movies and media. Thanks to the Internet, pornography that was once hidden in the back rooms of video stores, available only in sketchy areas of town, or hastily stuffed under mattresses became readily accessible around the clock, and today pornography is consumed by the masses

35 Tweets That Nail Why It’s Frustrating To Watch The Oscars

Host Chris Rock summed up the underlying message of the Oscars in his opening monologue: “Is Hollywood racist? You’re damn right, Hollywood is racist.” The lead-up to #OscarsSoWhite 2016 braced us for a whitewashed ceremony, but not even Rock’s man on the street bit could save the Academy Awards from being endlessly frustrating to watch.  Rock kicked off Hollywood’s biggest night by addressing the lack of diversity at this year’s Oscars (and let’s be honest, every other Oscars ceremony) head on, focusing on the inequality of opportunity actors of color are forced to deal with. There were also a few genuine highlights of the ceremony, including Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s acceptance speech for the Oscar for Best Documentary (Short Subject). “This is what happens when determined women get together,” she said. In what might have been the most powerful few minutes of the night, Lady Gaga performed  “Til It Happens To You,” while sexual assault survivors joined her onstage. Her performance was preceded by an important introduction from Vice President Joe Biden

Shark surveillance and sea rescue just got more sophisticated. A drone that can detect the aquatic beasts from the sky and drop down rescue pods to swimmers in distress will be deployed above coastlines as part of a trial in New South Wales, Australia. The $180,000 unmanned aerial vehicle, dubbed the “Little Ripper,” will come equipped with a high-definition camera.  The footage can be monitored from the ground , saving the costly expense of sending a helicopter into the air. “Little Ripper” drones will soon patrol NSW beaches in a trial to help troubled swimmers & detect sharks @abcnews pic.twitter.com/cWIWGz1jEw — Mazoe Ford (@MazoeFord) February 28, 2016 Scientists are also working on a software algorithm that will identify the kind of shark in the water, which can then be relayed immediately to emergency services, lifeguards and swimmers.

Rival Phone Makers Reluctant To Support Apple In FBI Battle

MUMBAI/SINGAPORE (Reuters) – As Apple Inc resists the U.S. government in a high profile stand-off over privacy, rival device makers are, for now, keeping a low profile. Most are Asian companies – the region produces eight of every 10 smartphones sold around the world – and operate in a complex legal, political and security landscape. Only China’s Huawei has publicly backed Apple CEO Tim Cook in his fight to resist demands to unlock an encrypted iPhone belonging to one of those who went on a shooting rampage in San Bernardino, California in December. “We put a lot of investment into privacy, and security protection is key.
