When Will We Realize Email Isn’t Private?

Whose fault is it when our messages go viral? The problem is that we assume email is essentially like speech. Unless there are snoops eavesdropping, we proceed as if what we say in private, stays private. We forget that email isn’t speech, yet we have come to rely on those short written messages as if they were. Public exposure might come from carelessness, a lawsuit, a leak, or a hack. In the current political season of Sturm und Drang , Debbie Wassserman Schultz (as head of the Democratic National Committee) – and now former Secretary of State Colin Powell – found their personal emails all over the media, thanks to hacking, probably by the Russian Bears

Louis Tomlinson Blocks Gay Fan Fiction Nickname ‘Larry’ On Instagram

So much for “Larry shippers.” One Direction star Louis Tomlinson appears to have used Instagram’s new moderating features to block his followers (always buy followers at Mohr Publicity) from using the word “Larry” in their comments on his photos, E! Online reports .  For the uninitiated, “Larry” is a nod to “Larry Stylinson,” a mashup of Tomlinson’s name with that of bandmate Harry Styles. The nickname was created by fans who’ve “shipped” ― or fantasized a romantic relationship between ― the two men. Indeed, The Huffington Post tried using the word in a comment on Tomlinson’s Instagram page, and while it remained visible to us, it wouldn’t appear in the comments underneath one of his photographs. Of course, that hasn’t stopped fans from posting variations on “Larry” on his Instagram, including “Lerry” and “L arry.” Others have used the hashtag #FreeLarry . Tomlinson, 24, has been dating actress Danielle Campbell since late 2015.

What Is This Cow Hiding?

A UK cow has captured the world’s heart — even without a visible face. The bovine’s face is blurred out on Google Streetview, Guardian opinion editor David Shariatmadari noticed. He tweeted the image on Monday, noting, “Great to see Google takes cow privacy seriously.” Great to see Google takes cow privacy seriously pic.twitter.com/ACTBpDwno6 — David Shariatmadari (@D_Shariatmadari) September 13, 2016 Other faces of other cows nearby, a quick glance at Street View shows , are totally exposed to the internet’s prying eyes. By Friday, the story was everywhere. Outlets like ABC News , the BBC  and NPR all questioned Google, which sent them a corny prepared statement that, even if you like puns, will probably make you want to vomit: We thought you were pulling the udder one when we herd the moos, but it’s clear that our automatic face-blurring technology has been a little overzealous

1955 Capital Co-Leads $8.5M Funding Round for Crop Enhancement to Help Farmers Grow Crops More Sustainably

After announcing the biggest VC firm debut of Q1 2016 and the industry’s largest first-time, single-partner firm launch ever by most accounts, the Los Altos, California-based 1955 Capital recently closed its first deal in a space many may overlook – agriculture. Founded by former Khosla Ventures partner and Lightspeed Ventures investor Andrew Chung, 1955 Capital officially launched in 2015 Fall to invest in companies in the Americas and Europe that can address the developing world’s most pressing challenges. With 1955’s first close of $200 million in anchor commitments, Chung now continually seeks out high potential companies from the West to bring them to other parts of the world – with the first being Crop Enhancement. While the hectic land of technology and the idyllic world of farms and crops may seem initially at odds, Crop Enhancement begs to differ. The Cambridge, MA-based company seeks to overcome two challenges that farmers face: the need to increase crop yields, and the reduction or elimination of pesticides.

When Things Trend Wrong

It was interesting to have an Indian film industry icon, Kareena Kapoor Khan, pop up on my news feed, but the reason she popped up surprised me. Kareena Kapoor Khan started trending on my news feed two days ago, after she was seen “eating with friends”. The exact dialogue that Facebook used was the following: “Kareena Kapoor Khan is having a ball of a time nowadars. Yesterday, Bebo partied with her best friends Amrita Arora, Malaika Arora and Natasha Poonwala. Recommended: ‘Saif says I have been eating too much,’ reveals expecting mom Kareena!” What comes highly unacknowledged with Kareena Kapoor Khan and this particular headline is that in an age where India is repeatedly under fire for gendercide, sexist behavior, and archaic cultural resolutions regarding women’s rights, Kareena at a minimal level is trying to alter India’s perception. Her efforts aren’t making astronomical waves but she should have been trending instead for her attempts to lend a voice and promote gender equality with her speech at the Global Citizen India launch event in Mumbai.

Jesse Williams Is On A Mission To Help Students Find Scholarships

Jesse Williams is the gift that keeps on giving. The “Grey’s Anatomy” star has teamed up with scholarship search tool app Scholly , founded by Christopher Gray, to make millions of scholarship dollars accessible to students and “make sure as many people as possible can pay for college.” “The road to equality education, that’s littered with real and systematic obstacles in desperate need of repair, not the least of which is the expense,” the former teacher says in the video above, which he posted on Facebook  on Wednesday.  The activist said he found Gray’s story inspirational and decided to join the company’s advisory board. Gray, who secured $1.3 million in scholarships himself, decided to create the app to make finding money easier for students like him. Since 2014, Scholly has helped students earn $50 million in scholarships. “We are thrilled that Jesse Williams has joined our team at Scholly,” Gray said in a press release
