Future of Advertising Tech: Manipulation or Personalized Targeting?

Lately with the political debates going on everyone seems heated about topics, trends, data. Who’s story is right, who’s story is wrong. The reality is most of social media and content is being tailored to your personal preferences so debating while fun, it is actually less likely with Facebook (for example) that you are constantly getting fed information that Facebook would like you to read or think about. How in a world of tailored content are we able to draw the line between “personalized” and “manipulation”?

A Social Media Starter’s Guide For Job Seekers

Looking for a job for the first time in over a decade can be a lot like trying to date again after getting divorced from a long marriage. You can try to do it the same way you did when you were much younger, but you would have much more success using social media to find the right match. If you aren’t sure where to start, this list will introduce you to how each major social media channel can help build your personal brand online and network like an all-star. According to a 2016 survey by CareerBuilder, 59 percent of hiring managers use search engines to research job candidates. If you have no presence online, you will be perceived as being out of touch. “Tools such as Facebook and Twitter enable employers to get a glimpse of who candidates are outside the confines of a resume or cover letter,” said Rosemary Haefner, chief human resources officer of CareerBuilder.

Anti-Semitic Trolls Threaten To Take Twitter Down With Them

If being told to “get back in the oven” isn’t considered anti-Semitic abuse, what is? That’s the issue Twitter is grappling with in the wake of a new report that shows a “sharp uptick” in the anti-Semitic bullying of journalists. The Anti-Defamation League studied millions of tweets in the year before July 2016 and found that, as the election ramped up, anti-Semitic harassment of journalists significantly increased . The abuse was largely perpetuated by the same cluster of about 1,600 users who describe themselves as white supremacists or neo-Nazis. Attacks on journalists like ex-Breitbart editor Ben Shapiro and CNN anchor Jake Tapper include slurs, Holocaust references and sloppy Photoshop jobs of people’s faces on the bodies of concentration camp victims. The report is just the latest example of Twitter’s failure to crack down on cyberbullying ― a failure that could cost them deeply. The company may have missed out on several big buyers due to concerns over what amounts to a relatively small army of trolls.

This Is How I Became A Leading Data Scientist

What was your path like from childhood to today? originally appeared on Quora – the knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights . Watch And Wait To See How Long Until This Samsung Phone Explodes

This is perhaps the new gold-standard for Facebook Live trolling.  The viral website Dose  just bought the self-destruction prone Samsung Galaxy Note 7  from Craigslist, put it on camera ― and asked viewers to watch and see “How long until it explodes?” Spoiler alert: It did not explode. Say what you will about how boring this week’s footage is ( so boring !) ― the gag worked. The video has 5.5 million views and 181,000 reactions, according to Facebook. People want to see phones exploding.

Dear Internet, It’s Time To #SavePepe

As the election draws near, with more and more women coming forward to share their stories of being sexually harassed by Donald Trump, it seems just about every self-respecting man, woman and child has jumped off the quickly self-destructing ship that is Trump’s hate-mongering campaign. There is, however, one amphibian whose political preferences have remained ambiguous ― until now, that is. Yes, friends, we’re talking about Pepe. After a bizarre dalliance with Trump’s most deplorable supporters, who adopted the frog as a symbol for the alt-right, the Anti-Defamation League and artist Matt Furie are fighting to bring back the Pepe they know and love. To do so, they’re urging the Light Side of the internet to band together and #SavePepe . One of the stranger side-effects of this nightmarish election cycle has been the alt-right’s adoption of Pepe the frog , a character originally created by Furie as part of his 2005 stoner zine “Boy’s Club.” In an earlier interview with The Huffington Post, Furie described Pepe as a slacker frog whose passions include smoking weed, eating pizza and goofing around with his bros

Sexual Assault Hotline Traffic Spiked During The Debate

Donald Trump’s abusive behavior  is news to no one ― his gaslighting techniques  and creepy, leering body language  fit the bill for textbook abuser.  But in the wake of his “ grab ‘em by the pussy ” comments that were released on Friday of last week, his inability to understand those comments aren’t simply “locker room talk, ” and his parading of alleged sexual assault survivors at the second debate brought Trump to a whole new level of ugliness ― and it’s having a serious effect on the mental health and well-being on sexual assault survivors who are tuning into the debates.  According to RAINN , the sexual assault survivor nonprofit that administers the National Sexual Assault Hotline, there was a 33 percent increase in online hotline traffic over the weekend ― particularly on Sunday night, the evening of the presidential debate. “There were times when there were 20-30 people in our queue,” a RAINN representative told The Huffington Post. “This conversation is evidence that sexual violence affects nearly every family in America.” RAINN provides anonymous and completely confidential support to its visitors. But used Twitter on Monday to share their thoughts on Trump’s triggering behavior ― from his body language and word choice to the way he used women as political props.  I have PTSD and I am extremely triggered after tonight. #debate — Sarah Fader (@TheSarahFader) October 10, 2016 If you're feeling triggered by the constant talk of sexual assault on your feed, know that you're not alone. — Hannah Stein (@hannahjewcy) October 8, 2016 Trump's performance during this debate is a master class for abusive tactics. #gaslighting #diversion #leering #interrupting #notmeYOU — Reggie Calcagno (@RBCalcagno) October 10, 2016 trying to put into words why I've felt triggered, sick to my stomach listening to @realDonaldTrump tonight

Breaking the Internet: Why Earned Content Will Kick Celebrities to the Curb

In a sea of social content, sponsored posts are becoming easier to spot and harder to believe. With many stars renouncing Instagram , consumers are turning away from star endorsements in favor of authentic opinions from their peers. Recently, magazines and fashion brands have seen a backlash from consumers, who are tired of the unrealistic beauty standards set by the influencers representing these products. Even celebrities have started to share in this frustration. Kerry Washington made headlines after venting over her retouched Adweek cover — and she’s not alone. Even those who have made a living editing advertisements, such as a former retoucher for Victoria’s Secret , have spoken out against the unfeasible beauty standards portrayed in the media
