Twitter Shows Us How Drastically We’ve Changed In A Tough 2016

The consensus among people who are living on Earth in 2016 is that, in general, things didn’t go well . That’s not to say that 2017 will be any better. In fact, it’s possible that 2016 is so bad that it will actually last 24 months. Yep, kind of a temporal dick move.

Pacific nations lose shortwave radio services that evade dictators and warn of natural disasters

US Geological Survey Alexandra Wake , RMIT University As a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of the Solomon Islands, triggering a tsunami warning across the Pacific, many residents of the tiny country would have turned to shortwave radio for more information. The tsunami warning has since been called off, though assessments of damage from the quake are not yet complete. Sadly, this vital communication service is under threat in this already under-resourced region. AAP/United States Geological Survey For almost 80 years, Australia has provided such shortwave services, including vital emergency service information, to Asia and the Pacific. But government funding cuts saw Asian services turned off in January 2015. And now the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has decided to cut the remaining services to residents of remote parts of the Pacific, Papua New Guinea and parts of northern Australia by ceasing its shortwave radio services to the Pacific from the end of January 2017.

Mom’s Instagram Account Highlights The Hilarious Things Her Kids Say

Parents know that kids say the darndest things. And this U.K. mom wants to remember all the magic.  Since May, Lisa Brazier aka “Mummy Piggles” has been posting photos of her daughters on Instagram ― with some of their funniest quotes in the captions. Brazier, who lives in Birmingham, told The Huffington Post that 5-year-old Isla and 4-year-old Alice are “constantly buzzing with curiosity.” “Mummy? Do you love Daddy?” “Yes, very much.” “Yeah, but is it worth it?” #outofthemouthsofbabes #shitmykidsays #convoswithmyfiveyearold #mummypiggles A photo posted by Lisa aka Mummy Piggles (@mummypiggles) on Aug 22, 2016 at 5:26am PDT “Their colorful and sometimes nonsensical observations of the world they’re growing up in make me laugh daily,” said Brazier, adding that she takes note of the girls’ funniest quotes to share with her husband at the end of the day.  When she started posting their quotes in Instagram captions, the mom realized how many other parents enjoyed and could relate to these anecdotes. “I think there’s so much pressure on parents to create and portray an image of perfection when it comes to raising children at the moment,” Brazier explained, pointing to the influence of social media.  “For me, it’s the perfectly imperfect moments that need capturing ― moments for me like, when my kid told the local priest that he was wearing ‘a nice dress,’ when my daughter had a full meltdown because she thought I’d said ‘goodnight Nigel’ instead of ‘goodnight Angel,’ or when we role-play ‘Frozen’ (the girls are Anna and Elsa and I have to be ‘Pisdoff’),” she added.  “What else did you learn at church today?” “Uhm.

Students Create Brilliant Extension That Identifies Fake News

As the influence of fake news on the recent presidential election continues to be a hot topic, one group of students may have found a solution to getting duped by inaccurate sources.  A team of four graduate and undergrad students recently created “FiB,” a Google Chrome extension that verifies the authenticity of posts on Facebook to combat the circulation of fake news. What’s more, the group created the prototype in under 36 hours at a hackathon last month at Princeton University in New Jersey.  The tool is currently unavailable for public use, but Anant Goel, a freshman at Purdue University who’s involved in the project, told The Huffington Post in an email that the team plans to officially release it during the first week of January.  “We wanted to create a proof of concept that the issue of fake news in social media can be tackled at a large scale,” Goel told NBC News of the project.  The FiB extension helps users separate the real from the fake through its two verification models, Goel explained to HuffPost. It first gives the source of the news, link or image a confidence score based on the source’s past credibility, he said. The extension also takes a step further by looking at the content, extracting keywords, and getting a summary of the article.  “We perform multiple searches on keywords and summaries. Depending on the results of these searches we give it another confidence score,” Goel explained, adding that depending on if the scores pass a certain threshold, they’re marked either “verified” or “unverified.”  Following the election, companies like Facebook and Google came under fire when the propagation of fake news, which was hosted on the platforms, was said to have had a hand in swinging the decision in Donald Trump’s favor.

Ageless Innovators: Market Disruptors Over 60

Photo Credit: Sean Su Most entrepreneurship programs and incubators focus on the young. Seasoned professionals are typically seen as a good source of unpaid labor as portrayed by Robert DeNiro in the movie The Intern . Like a fine wine that gets better with age, older professionals offer invaluable skills and are often overlooked as innovators. Vera Wang, Julia Childs, Nina Zagat, Stan Lee, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Chris Gardner and more were over the age of 40 before success embraced them.
