Twitter Just Got Even Bigger

SUNNYVALE — Twitter has established its first presence in the South Bay by leasing an office in downtown Sunnyvale, and real estate agents said Thursday that it may expand its local operations further. The San Francisco-based microblogging service has leased 8,000 square feet near the Caltrain station in Sunnyvale, according to brokers with Colliers International who arranged the deal. “This is a big deal for this area — a tech company from San Francisco opening an office in Silicon Valley,” said Colliers broker Kevin Moul. A number of high-profile companies have agreed to lease large blocks of space in Sunnyvale over the last several months, including Apple (AAPL), Google (GOOG), LinkedIn and Amazon unit Lab 126. “Twitter bypassed Mountain View and Palo Alto, even though there are blocks of space the same size as this lease, because we do offer the ability to expand at our location,” said David Sandlin, a senior vice president with Colliers. “Twitter is on a high growth curve.” The new Twitter office would have about 40 to 50 employees, based on the size of the Twitter lease and the typical allowance for employees per square foot of space

Even When Politicians Fight, Americans Often Agree

WASHINGTON — Can we agree on this? Americans still think alike much of the time even if our politicians don’t. To get heads nodding, just say something worrisome about the economy or dismissive of Washington. Almost all Americans consider themselves very patriotic, believe in God, value higher education and admire those who get rich through hard work. Not much argument there

Mark Zuckerberg’s Immigration Group Loses Big Backers

WASHINGTON — Billionaire eco-entrepreneur Elon Musk announced on Friday that he was quitting Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s immigration advocacy group, upset over its controversial political strategy. Fwd.us told The Huffington Post that a second funder also had decided to withdraw. Several media outlets have reported that David Sacks, founder of the business networking site Yammer and a former colleague of Musk’s, had dropped off the list of the group’s supporters. Zuckerberg started Fwd.us to press for comprehensive immigration reform . But the group has been heavily criticized by some immigration reform supporters in recent weeks for its television ad campaign praising lawmakers for backing projects like the Keystone XL pipeline and drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

How Many Can You Name?

For the purpose of this column, I’m going to focus on the “big” networks—Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google+, Instagram, Pinterest, foursquare, LinkedIn and flickr. As you’ll notice, that’s still a pretty long list. Having an active, well-managed presence on nine networks isn’t just a challenge for many brands—it’s impossible. Here’s where the challenge comes in: How

Dead Meme Nearly Kills Guy

As far as viral memes go, the “Harlem Shake” is pretty much dead. And when these latecomers decided to incorporate what looks like a firecracker and a canister of something flammable into their rendition — well, frankly, they narrowly avoided the same fate. Not to spoil things too much, but the guy that starts off the video, bopping on the hood of the car, literally walks into an explosion about 25 seconds in. Then, when the blast knocks over the red drum and sets it on fire, he appears to throw water on it. Bad idea. Is it suspicious that someone left a canister of flammable liquid on the hood of the car, or just plain stupid

Progressive Groups Pull Facebook Ads In Protest Of Mark Zuckerberg’s Political Strategy

WASHINGTON — A coalition of progressive groups is pulling its ads from Facebook in protest over political positions taken by the organization started by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. The effort is being led by former Sen. Russ Feingold’s (D-Wis.) Progressives United, and joined by MoveOn.org, Democracy for America, CREDO, Daily Kos, Sierra Club, the League of Conservation Voters, 350.org and Presente. The groups announced on Tuesday that they would either pull the Facebook ads they’ve already paid for or hold purchases of new ads for a minimum of two weeks in response to the tactics of Zuckerberg’s new political organization, FWD.us. Zuckerberg launched the group to press for comprehensive immigration reform
