Public Speaking? There’s An App For That

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com According to the 2015 Chapman University Survey of American Fears , the top three personal anxieties that make us lose sleep are (1) reptiles, (2) public speaking, and (3) heights. There’s not much Quiet Revolution can do about scary snakes and dizzying drop-offs, but when it comes to glossophobia , we are here to help with a selection of apps that focus on the different facets of making a presentation. So, clip on that wireless mike, and be heard! Before the curtain rises If you need to sedate the butterflies in your stomach prior to making a presentation,  Public Speaking (Android) and Confident Public Speaking (iOS and Android) may give you some relief. These apps are guided meditation and self-hypnosis programs that can help you relax and minimize the anxiety of speaking in front of crowds. A certain number of verbal pauses are perfectly fine, but when your speech is peppered with many ummms and uhhhs, it gets distracting and annoying.

Facebook Is Finally Taking Action Against Fake News

After an election season infused with hoax stories, more than a month of global outcry and at least one real-world incident of gun violence in the U.S., Facebook is finally stepping up to combat the spread of fake news. The social network announced Thursday that it will work with fact-checking outlets to label fake stories, flagged by users, as “disputed.” Adam Mosseri, a vice president in charge of the   news feed, shared the changes in a press release.  Now before sharing a fake story on the site, you’ll get a warning that its accuracy has been “disputed.” To find out why, you’ll be able to click a link for a fact-check of the article. The updates are rolling out Thursday, so you won’t see the disputed flags right away, but expect them shortly. Facebook also announced several other steps that chief executive Mark Zuckerberg had hinted at in a post  last month. The moves come after some full-throated denials from Zuckerberg ― in the wake of Donald Trump ’s Election Day victory ― that fake news was even a serious issue. It’s too early to know whether these efforts will be effective in combating the problem, which is perhaps larger in scope than many initially realized

Trump Again Asks Why Russian Hacking Wasn’t Addressed Before The Election, Even Though It Was

President-elect Donald Trump  on Thursday asked once again why Russia hacking  the U.S. election wasn’t brought up before Nov. 8 ― even though it was. In a tweet, Trump wondered why the White House didn’t “complain” about the hacking until after he defeated former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton . If Russia, or some other entity, was hacking, why did the White House wait so long to act? Why did they only complain after Hillary lost?

(VIDEO) Twitter’s Moore: Communicating In An ‘Increasingly Visual’ Way For Users, Advertisers

MIAMI – As Twitter endeavors to future-proof itself, live video has been trending this year. The traditional 140-character communications platform sees “global video solutions” as a way of letting users view and communicate with all sorts of characters–with advertisers in tow. “If you open up that app today, it looks a hell of a lot different” than the typed-character limitation landscape of yore, Ryan Moore, the company’s Global Agency Development Lead, says during a panel discussion during the recent Beet.TV Retreat 2016. “It looks like video from marketers.

Twitter Shows Us How Drastically We’ve Changed In A Tough 2016

The consensus among people who are living on Earth in 2016 is that, in general, things didn’t go well . That’s not to say that 2017 will be any better. In fact, it’s possible that 2016 is so bad that it will actually last 24 months. Yep, kind of a temporal dick move.

Pacific nations lose shortwave radio services that evade dictators and warn of natural disasters

US Geological Survey Alexandra Wake , RMIT University As a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of the Solomon Islands, triggering a tsunami warning across the Pacific, many residents of the tiny country would have turned to shortwave radio for more information. The tsunami warning has since been called off, though assessments of damage from the quake are not yet complete. Sadly, this vital communication service is under threat in this already under-resourced region. AAP/United States Geological Survey For almost 80 years, Australia has provided such shortwave services, including vital emergency service information, to Asia and the Pacific. But government funding cuts saw Asian services turned off in January 2015. And now the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has decided to cut the remaining services to residents of remote parts of the Pacific, Papua New Guinea and parts of northern Australia by ceasing its shortwave radio services to the Pacific from the end of January 2017.

Mom’s Instagram Account Highlights The Hilarious Things Her Kids Say

Parents know that kids say the darndest things. And this U.K. mom wants to remember all the magic.  Since May, Lisa Brazier aka “Mummy Piggles” has been posting photos of her daughters on Instagram ― with some of their funniest quotes in the captions. Brazier, who lives in Birmingham, told The Huffington Post that 5-year-old Isla and 4-year-old Alice are “constantly buzzing with curiosity.” “Mummy? Do you love Daddy?” “Yes, very much.” “Yeah, but is it worth it?” #outofthemouthsofbabes #shitmykidsays #convoswithmyfiveyearold #mummypiggles A photo posted by Lisa aka Mummy Piggles (@mummypiggles) on Aug 22, 2016 at 5:26am PDT “Their colorful and sometimes nonsensical observations of the world they’re growing up in make me laugh daily,” said Brazier, adding that she takes note of the girls’ funniest quotes to share with her husband at the end of the day.  When she started posting their quotes in Instagram captions, the mom realized how many other parents enjoyed and could relate to these anecdotes. “I think there’s so much pressure on parents to create and portray an image of perfection when it comes to raising children at the moment,” Brazier explained, pointing to the influence of social media.  “For me, it’s the perfectly imperfect moments that need capturing ― moments for me like, when my kid told the local priest that he was wearing ‘a nice dress,’ when my daughter had a full meltdown because she thought I’d said ‘goodnight Nigel’ instead of ‘goodnight Angel,’ or when we role-play ‘Frozen’ (the girls are Anna and Elsa and I have to be ‘Pisdoff’),” she added.  “What else did you learn at church today?” “Uhm.
