Google Uses Kids To Promote Its Brand In The Classroom

I’m not writing about the Disney Channel or Nickelodeon, Marvel or Harry Potter. This blog is about how high-tech companies like Google use kids and schools to grab market shares and promote their brands and the negative consequences. On May 14, 2017, a front-page article in the New York Times reported on “How Google Took Over The USA Classroom.” According to the article, “Google, a unit of the $652 billion Alphabet, is the latest big contender in a decades-old battle among tech companies to hook students as future customers.” The report focused on one particular school in Chicago. “The sixth graders at Newton Bateman, a public elementary school here with a classic red brick facade, know the Google drill. In a social-science class last year, the students each grabbed a Google-powered laptop. They opened Google Classroom, an app where teachers make assignments

3D-Printed ‘Eyes’ Could Help Blind Children’s Faces Grow Naturally

BALTIMORE — Scientists and engineers are 3D printing all types of objects these days, including eyes: A group of eye specialists and eye-care providers from the Netherlands has used 3D-printing technology to create artificial eye structures, called conformers, in a small study of five children. The technique could help children with conditions called microphthalmia and anophthalmia, in which they are born with underdeveloped or missing eyes, respectively, the research team says. These conditions, which can occur in one or both eyes, affect more than 10 percent of blind children worldwide and as many as 30 in 100,000 children, according to previous studies. Although the sculpted eyes don’t enable the child to see, they do provide critical support of the eye socket so that the child’s face can have a natural, proportional look, the researchers said today (May 11) here at the annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), the world’s largest gathering of eye and vision researchers. “If there’s no eye present, there’s not enough adequate stimulus for the bone around the eye socket to grow,” Maayke Kuijten, a postdoctoral fellow at the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam who conducted a study on five children fitted with the conformers, said at ARVO. The 10 Weirdest Things Created by 3D Printing Because children with these conditions may have malformed eye sockets, the face and the areas around the eyes cannot expand to their natural contour, Kuijten said.

There’s A New App Called YayYo. It’s Like Uber, But For Empty Promises.

Ramy El-Batrawi has founded 27 companies that are now inactive or dissolved, hawking everything from relationship counseling to futures trading to van rentals to Alaskan fishing vacations, a HuffPost review of state records finds. He even ran a travel agency in Palm Beach, Florida, with a Saudi arms dealer involved in the Iran-Contra affair, and was named as a go-between for an offshore entity  listed in the Panama Papers. In 2010, the Securities and Exchange Commission barred El-Batrawi from being an executive in a publicly traded company for five years as part of the settlement over a $130 million stock fraud case against a company he led until it collapsed in 2001. Now that his prohibition period is over, El-Batrawi has something new to sell: shares in YayYo, a price-comparing ride-sharing app that doesn’t currently work and is pronounced like outdated slang for cocaine. The company, with El-Batrawi as CEO, is trying to sell $50 million in stock ― which it can do thanks to newly relaxed securities laws that let speculative startups raise money from mom-and-pop investors.

Mark Zuckerberg Is Making Good On His Wedding Promise To Priscilla Chan

Happy anniversary to Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan ! On Friday, the Facebook CEO and his wife ― a philanthropist and pediatrician ― celebrated their fifth  wedding anniversary. Zuckerberg marked the occasion with a sweet Facebook post (naturally!) that also told the funny story of how their wedding ended up falling just one day after the social media company went public back in 2012.  I can't believe it's been a year! And she kissed me on the cheek for the first time yesterday :). Here's to many more years of happiness and health for Max and all children around the world. A post shared by Mark Zuckerberg (@zuck) on Nov 30, 2016 at 12:46pm PST “Priscilla and I wanted a low key wedding so we decided to make it a surprise and have it in our backyard. I sent our friends and family an email telling them I was throwing a surprise party for Priscilla to celebrate her graduation from medical school. Since they thought it was a surprise for Priscilla, they kept it quiet

Woman’s Anti-Gay ‘Last Man Standing’ Rant Causes Her To Lose Her Job

Fans of “ Last Man Standing ” were stunned last week when ABC announced the comedy series, which stars Tim Allen, would be canceled after six seasons.  Speculation over whether or not politics played a role in ABC’s decision to ax the show began to heat up after the May 10 announcement . After all, Allen is  an outspoken supporter of President Donald Trump , and has compared being a Republican in Hollywood  to “’30s Germany.” Among those who bought into the rumors was Debbie Odom Massey, who was the executive director of the Madison-Rivergate Chamber of Commerce in Madison, Tennessee. Massey blasted her “favorite” show’s cancelation in a May 11 Facebook post , calling the decision “discrimination” and a violation of free speech.  The post reportedly read as follows:   “I can’t believe that I am supposed to be ok with shows like Grays Anatomy or Nashville or any other show that promotes LGBT blah blah blah..,WHATEVER! Cramming same sex making out into our Homes! But I can’t watch MY FAVORITE show! ‘Last Man Standing’! Talk about discrimination!! ABC needs to listen to the majority ― not the 2% -Afraid of lawsuit? Maybe we should scream, riot, wine and create law suits against EVERYBODY that doesn’t make us feel good, then we can get our way!! ‘Last Man Standing’ also offered the counter viewpoint…it’s not like you didn’t hear the other side. It is obvious they wish to only present their views and only wish to INDOCTRINATE people. We live in a country of FREE speech, if we believe it we should practice it and not support those who suppress it!”  Though Massey appears to have deleted her post later that day, her words nonetheless sparked a firestorm of controversy.

Researchers See Possible North Korea Link To Global Cyber Attack

Cyber security researchers have found technical evidence they said could link North Korea with the global WannaCry “ransomware” cyber attack that has infected more than 300,000 computers in 150 countries since Friday. Symantec ( SYMC.O ) and Kaspersky Lab said on Monday that some code in an earlier version of the WannaCry software had also appeared in programs used by the Lazarus Group, which researchers from many companies have identified as a North Korea-run hacking operation. “This is the best clue we have seen to date as to the origins of WannaCry,” Kaspersky Lab researcher Kurt Baumgartner told Reuters. Both firms said it was too early to tell whether North Korea was involved in the attacks, based on the evidence that was published on Twitter by Google security researcher Neel Mehta. The attacks, which slowed on Monday, are among the fastest-spreading extortion campaigns on record. The research will be closely followed by law enforcement agencies around the world, including Washington, where President Donald Trump’s homeland security adviser said on Monday that both foreign nations and cyber criminals were possible culprits

The Tech Giant Suing Uber Is Taking Its Technology To Lyft

Having already stabbed Uber by way of a potentially disastrous lawsuit , Waymo is now twisting the knife. The Google spinoff says it will partner with Lyft , Uber’s biggest ride-hailing rival, to help test and launch self-driving cars. Having access to this new technology would be a big coup for Lyft, as Waymo’s self-driving efforts are ― quite literally ―  miles ahead of the pack . Waymo announced last month that it plans to add 500 self-driving cars to its fleet, and the vehicles are improving as they come online. Compared to Waymo ― and Uber, which has an entire division dedicated to autonomous research ― Lyft’s efforts on self-driving vehicles are badly lagging.
