A Dystopian Novelist Predicted Trump’s Campaign Slogan In The ’90s

There’s something maddeningly vague about Donald Trump’s catchall campaign slogan, “Make America great again.” Maybe it’s the blatant fallacy of “again,” alluding to imagined halcyon days. Or maybe it’s the lack of specificity of the word “great” — if you were to survey 10 Americans about what greatness looked like to them, you’d likely turn up a mish-mash of responses, and certainly nothing actionable.  Whatever the case, it seems sci-fi writer and unofficial Queen of the Galaxy Octavia Butler predicted the slogan a couple of decades ago. Nearly 20 years before Trump trademarked the term , she wrote about a character named Senator Andrew Steele Jarret, a harbinger for violence in her 1998 book Parable of the Talents . You can see an excerpt outlining Jarret’s use of the phrase “make American great again” below: TMW you see a presidential slogan in a dystopian sci-fi novel set in 2032 being used today. #OctaviaButler #trump pic.twitter.com/jhAZKSLUEM — oligopistos (@oligopistos) June 30, 2016 As Fusion writes , Butler’s “crystal ball wasn’t entirely accurate; he didn’t have Trump’s red-orange hair.” But, her antagonist did run for office during a period of isolationism, religious intolerance and duress. Sound familiar?

DVD Player In Tesla Raises Questions In Autopilot Death

A digital video disc player was found in the Tesla car that was on autopilot when its driver was killed in a collision with a truck in May, Florida Highway Patrol officials said on Friday. “There was a portable DVD player in the vehicle,” said Sergeant Kim Montes of the FHP in a telephone interview. She said there was no camera found, mounted on the dash or of any kind, in the wreckage. A lawyer for a truck driver involved in the accident with the Tesla told Reuters his investigators had spoken to a witness who said the DVD player was playing a “Harry Potter” video after the accident, but the lawyer was unable to verify that beyond the witness account.

Rebecca Hall ‘Blown Away’ By Steven Spielberg’s On-Screen Adaptation Of ‘The BFG’

Rebecca Hall has worked with her fair share of well-known directors , including Christopher Nolan, Woody Allen and Ben Affleck, but her recent experience on “The BFG” with Steven Spielberg was one for the books.  The actress, who plays Mary in the onscreen adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved novel, opened up to The Huffington Post about her “special experience” working with Spielberg during an AOL Build interview on Tuesday.  “Steven Spielberg was a huge part of my childhood, like everyone’s, I guess,” Hall said, referencing her love of “E.T.” and “Jaws” (which she says she watched when she was “far too young.”) Hall was thrilled to be a part of the whimsical movie, which tells the story of a young orphan, Sophie (Ruby Barnhill), who forms a bond with a non-human-eating giant nicknamed the BFG or the Big Friendly Giant, played by Mark Rylance. “He seems to have a very unique access to what it is to be a child still, and he has all of that wonder and excitement and joy about life,” Hall added of Spielberg. “I think that’s what makes his films for children so brilliant and also what makes him so brilliant to direct children. It was really special to watch him do that and watch him create this world.”  Hall appears in the live-action part of the film, which takes place in Buckingham Palace as the Queen (Penelope Wilton) and co. meet the BFG. But despite not being involved in any of the green screen, CGI and motion-capture bits, the actress was “blown away” by the special effects and Rylance’s imaginative performance.  “I’m in the last quarter of the film, so when I watched the film, I was very much like an audience member who had no expectation or understanding of what I was supposed to see for the first hour and 15 minutes

These Apps Let You Get The Pill And Skip The Pelvic Exam

By Annie Lowrey A few weeks ago, I went to pick up my birth-control prescription from my local pharmacy and was told my doctor needed renew it. I called my doctor’s office, and they told me I needed to come in. I came in, and they insisted that I have a pelvic exam and a pap smear, tests that I had had last year and, according to the latest medical guidelines, did not need. I explained I was there for a time-sensitive prescription consultation and not for a well-woman exam. And they held my medication hostage: No pap, no pill

Gizmo Attaches To Garbage Disposals, Turns Food Waste Into Compost

A tiny tweak can have a huge impact. Six students at Rice University have created a motor-operated device that attaches to your food disposal and turns food waste into compost, which can be used as nutrient-rich soil. The mechanical gadget, called BioBlend, is activated whenever someone turns on a food disposal. BioBlend then separates food waste by chopping it up and straining out water. The water is then sent to a municipal wastewater treatment, while the food waste is stored under your sink until it can be composted — or used for biogas generation, which uses waste to generate gas for cooking .

Quirky Retro Video Shows Evolution Of The Video Game Controller

Video game controllers have come a long way. The Oculus Rift virtual reality headset would have been a mere fantasy for gamers in the late 1950s, who were more used to using a simple, 2-buttoned plastic box to play ” Tennis for Two .” To celebrate the evolution of the gaming device, YouTube channel ” Super Deluxe ” put together a quirkily retro video featuring animations of the world’s most popular controllers. From Atari to Xbox, they’re all there. Check it out in the clip above.
