These Apps Let You Get The Pill And Skip The Pelvic Exam

By Annie Lowrey A few weeks ago, I went to pick up my birth-control prescription from my local pharmacy and was told my doctor needed renew it. I called my doctor’s office, and they told me I needed to come in. I came in, and they insisted that I have a pelvic exam and a pap smear, tests that I had had last year and, according to the latest medical guidelines, did not need. I explained I was there for a time-sensitive prescription consultation and not for a well-woman exam. And they held my medication hostage: No pap, no pill

Gizmo Attaches To Garbage Disposals, Turns Food Waste Into Compost

A tiny tweak can have a huge impact. Six students at Rice University have created a motor-operated device that attaches to your food disposal and turns food waste into compost, which can be used as nutrient-rich soil. The mechanical gadget, called BioBlend, is activated whenever someone turns on a food disposal. BioBlend then separates food waste by chopping it up and straining out water. The water is then sent to a municipal wastewater treatment, while the food waste is stored under your sink until it can be composted — or used for biogas generation, which uses waste to generate gas for cooking .

Quirky Retro Video Shows Evolution Of The Video Game Controller

Video game controllers have come a long way. The Oculus Rift virtual reality headset would have been a mere fantasy for gamers in the late 1950s, who were more used to using a simple, 2-buttoned plastic box to play ” Tennis for Two .” To celebrate the evolution of the gaming device, YouTube channel ” Super Deluxe ” put together a quirkily retro video featuring animations of the world’s most popular controllers. From Atari to Xbox, they’re all there. Check it out in the clip above.

Facebook And Google Have New Weapons In Place To Block Extremist Videos

Some of the web’s biggest destinations for watching videos have quietly started using automation to remove extremist content from their sites, according to two people familiar with the process. The move is a major step forward for internet companies that are eager to eradicate violent propaganda from their sites and are under pressure to do so from governments around the world as attacks by extremists proliferate, from Syria to Belgium and the United States. YouTube and Facebook are among the sites deploying systems to block or rapidly take down Islamic State videos and other similar material, the sources said. The technology was originally developed to identify and remove copyright-protected content on video sites. It looks for “hashes,” a type of unique digital fingerprint that internet companies automatically assign to specific videos, allowing all content with matching fingerprints to be removed rapidly. Such a system would catch attempts to repost content already identified as unacceptable, but would not automatically block videos that have not been seen before.

Mysterious Floating Black Ring Over Disneyland Explained

When you visit any Disney park, you’re encouraged to suspend your normal  beliefs about what’s possible and enter a world of fantasy, magic, and illusion.  So, it came as no real surprise when, at the end of April, while enjoying the sights and sounds of Disneyland in Anaheim, California, Kyle Hawkins saw something odd in the early evening sky. “No idea what this could be. Walking up Main Street at Disneyland, following the parade,” Hawkins wrote on his YouTube page . “Everyone around me starts looking up and pointing at this daunting black ring floating methodically above us.

The ‘Affectionator’ Machine Lets Your Dog Pet You

People with pets love to say that really, their animals own them, not the other way around. But this contraption, which allows dogs to “pet” their humans and give them treats, really drives that sentiment home. The video went up on YouTube in May, but it’s been popping up all over online this week. While it might seem sort of silly to employ a robot to pet your dog when you’re sitting right across the table, hooking something like this up remotely — say, when you’re at work, could be pretty awesome. And if your dog could pet you or give you treats (maybe coffee?) while you’re at the office, well..

Teen Who Asked To Carry Groceries In Exchange For Food Gets Good Karma In Return

A GoFundMe page inspired by a viral Facebook post raised over $72,000 for a teen in need. Mike White, 30, was in the produce section of a Kroger in Memphis, Tennessee, when 16-year-old Chauncy Jones Black approached him and asked if he could carry his groceries to his car in exchange for a pack of glazed donuts. “This kid looked like he had been turned down 100 times,” White wrote in a Facebook post on June 10 that has since gone viral, receiving over 9,000 likes and 7,000 shares. “He looked ashamed, hungry and broken.” White began talking to the teen and soon found out that he didn’t have anything at home to eat. Black lives alone with Barbara, a woman who says she has legal custody of Black, though there are conflicting reports as to whether she is his mother or grandmother
