Second Life

Somewhere in the Chicago Police Department, someone spends more time on YouTube and Twitter than you do. Social networks and content-sharing sites have made it easier than ever for would-be criminals to sell stolen goods online, harass people, or organize a mob like the ones that besieged the Loop last month. But it's also easier for police officials to keep track of those activities and make …

Janet Tavakoli: Growth Hackers Divided on Facebook and Google+

I’ve been a critic of Facebook’s performance since its IPO last year. Its recent earnings report didn’t fail to disappoint compared to the hype. Mobile represents around 30 percent of Facebook’s revenues and grew by just under 43 percent year-over-year (from first quarter 2012 to first quarter 2013). That’s still only $1.25 billion, which is not much given Facebook claims over 1 billion users — I question that — and also has associated costs. Its earnings per share growth is still hamstrung. More on that in a moment

Steve Rosenbaum: The New York Tech Scene Rocked Last Week.

There were so many deals, events, gatherings, and transactions – I hardly know where to begin. So, let me begin 15 years ago. That’s when Andrew Rasiej founded Mouse, an organization with a clear focus – to get good technology into New York’s Public Schools. WATCH: Homemade Lightsaber Can Burn Through Almost Everything

A fan of Star Wars, lasers and potentially dangerous experiments has posted a video of a homemade lightsaber. And yes, it can burn through stuff – terrifyingly well. Highlighted by TheNextWeb on Monday (during a traditional lull for tech news), the video shows YouTube user styropyro testing his 3W handheld laser on a variety of objects, and burning through them all. The laser is powered by two laptop batteries, and while it probably can’t slice off an upstart Jedi’s hand in one swipe, it’s a pretty dangerous beast. Styropyro writes on his YouTube page: “I usually try to refrain from using the term “lightsaber” when referring to my lasers but there really isn’t much else out there to describe this laser.” For further reading we recommend this XKCD ‘What If?’ article about how to fire lasers at the Moon to make it change colour
