A Hot Trend: The Internet, Social Media & The Elderly

Many might think that social media is the exclusive domain of the younger generation. However, many of our older adults have enthusiastically adopted it to keep up with the times as well as their old acquaintances and younger family members. Grandparents are becoming proficient in alien things like Skype and Facebook and liking it. It has become a healthy emotional outlet and word of its benefits has spread like wildfire among the elderly. According to the Pew Research Center , Internet use among those 65 and older grew 150 percent between 2009 and 2011, the largest growth in a demographic group.

Khloe Kardashian Says All Social Media Is ‘Demonic’

At time of publication, Khloe Kardashian has 43.8 million Instagram followers, 19.2 million Twitter followers and 16.2 million Facebook likes.  Khloe Kardashian is a social media queen.  And yet,   when The Huffington Post talked to her about her fans on the Internet, her thoughts were mixed, at best.  “Social media is a great thing, but it’s also demonic, in a way,” she said. Kardashian said she has to be “strong” to withstand the attention her posts receive in retweets and favorites, yes, but it’s comments in particular that bother her. She usually regrets reading those. “I notice when I do that, you get sucked into this thing,” Kardashian said of reading the comments.

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama will give keynote addresses  at this year’s SXSW conference in Austin, Texas. According to a release from SXSW, this will mark the first time a sitting president and first lady have participated in the series of film, media and music festivals. The president will participate in a keynote conversation at the technology-focused SXSW Interactive Festival on March 11, while the first lady will give the opening address at SXSW Music Festival on March 16. She’s expected to talk about her Let Girls Learn initiative, which aims to help young women around the world gain access to an education. Politicians are regulars at SXSW

The Future Of Voting Could Be A Dystopian Nightmare

Enjoy the craziness of election season while you can: In the future, computers could become so adept at molding your behavior that you won’t really  choose who you vote for anymore. At least, that’s what one robotics expert at Carnegie Mellon University fears. Professor Illah Nourbakhsh  recently appeared on a panel called “Life in 2025” during a conference at MIT . He expressed concern that today’s germs of artificial intelligence technology could evolve into a full-blown disease that infects our political system.  Nourbakhsh envisioned a future where politicians control voters based on their data — the information they create when posting online, using a smartphone and so on.
