Supreme Court To Review Facebook Ban For North Carolina Sex Offenders

Sex offenders in North Carolina not only have to register with their local communities  once they’ve served their time ― they also have to stay off Facebook and other social media sites for 30 years. But the Supreme Court is expected to hear arguments Monday on whether that law violates the constitutional right to free speech. The case concerns Lester Packingham, now 36, who was convicted of a felony in 2010 for having a Facebook account. In 2002, when Packingham was 21, he pled guilty to taking indecent liberties with a 13-year-old girl. He said he was dating the girl and claimed he wasn’t aware of her age , NPR reports. He was given a suspended sentence and two years’ probation

20 Savage (And Sad) Texts People Wish They Could Send Their Exes

There are times after a breakup when you come *this* close to texting your ex . Thanks to a genius new  Google spreadsheet  titled “things i wanna text my ex,” there’s now a place to redirect all those potentially embarrasing messages. Created by 24-year-old Princeton grad Sean Drohan, the public doc gives the brokenhearted a chance to anonymously share anything left unsaid post-split. The would-be texts range from laugh-out-loud funny to genuinely sad. Some check both boxes ― “I loved your dog more than I ever loved you,” one reads.  In an  interview with Refinery29 , Drohan said he has firsthand experience with sending regrettable ex texts.  “There’s plenty I would like to say to my exes (and too much I’ve already said),” Drohan said .

Scott Steinberg on Manners for the Digital World

The good news is that digital connections have brought us closer. That’s also the bad news as the merging of our work, school, and personal lives raises a new and very complicated set of issues around who sees what. Protecting privacy, staying safe, demonstrating professionalism, and responding to views or behavior you might prefer not to have seen can all be difficult. In his new book, Netiquette Essentials: New Rules for Minding Your Manners in a Digital World , Scott Steinberg provides thoughtful guidance for navigating the challenges of social media. Snap Makes $3 Billion IPO Details Public

Snap Inc, owner of popular messaging service Snapchat, made many of its financial details public for the first time on Thursday, as it prepared to raise up to $3 billion in an initial public offering in New York that is expected to come in March. The disclosure was Snap’s opening salvo in convincing investors that the company, which launched in 2012 as a free mobile app with disappearing messages, has come up with a sustainable business model despite increasing losses. Snap had confidentially registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission late last year and kept the prospectus under such tight wraps that even some of its IPO underwriters had not seen it prior to publication on Thursday, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. Snap said in the IPO registration document published on Thursday it would become the first U.S.

When Inspiration Strikes: UGC’s Role in the Path to Purchase

Social media has evolved from being a fun pastime to a central part of human life, influencing how we keep in touch with family, socialize with friends and share content we’re passionate about. Across industries, social media has also become a vital part of the consumer journey, and consumers representing all demographics are turning to social networks to seek inspiration and information, and make purchasing decisions. Historically, celebrity endorsements were considered a primary strategy for driving consumer purchases, but today, many people are influenced more by regular, non-celebrity users than by influencers with massive followings. In fact, according to our recent survey, 76 percent of consumers view user-generated content (UGC) as more honest than traditional advertising, demonstrating an indispensable opportunity for brands to better resonate with audiences. To meet this desire for authentic content, marketers should strive to insert UGC into all phases of the purchasing cycle, from discovery to point of purchase to post-purchase. DISCOVERY PHASE Whether they’re scrolling past a photo of a friend modeling a new coat, or perusing images of a favorite shade of nail polish, UGC grants shoppers an intimate understanding of products

Here’s What’s Really Going On With Mark Zuckerberg’s Hawaiian Land Battle

HONOLULU ― Facebook founder  Mark Zuckerberg is making a lot of noise on the quiet Hawaiian island of Kauai after word got out that lawsuits he filed last month to secure his beachfront estate could force Hawaii residents to sell their inherited land.  Zuckerberg’s 700-acre property, which the billionaire purchased for more than $100 million in 2014, contains almost a dozen smaller parcels known as “kuleana” lands,  according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Local families hold rights to these lands under The Kuleana Act of 1850 and can legally enter Zuckerberg’s estate to reach their parcels. To keep his new property private, three of Zuckerberg’s Hawaii-based companies filed eight lawsuits, called “quiet title and partition” actions, on Dec. 30 against hundreds of people , living and dead, who have partial rights to kuleana lands on the estate, according to court records. A quiet title claim is a common way of establishing real estate ownership, and ultimately may lead to a judge ordering the land sold at auction, the Star-Advertiser reported
