How Technology Hijacks People’s Minds

From a Magician and Google’s Design Ethicist Estimated reading time: 12 minutes. I’m an expert on how technology hijacks our psychological vulnerabilities. That’s why I spent the last three years as a Design Ethicist at Google caring about how to design things in a way that defends a billion people’s minds from getting hijacked. When using technology, we often focus optimistically on all the things it does for us. But I want you to show you where it might do the opposite. Where does technology exploit our minds’ weaknesses?

Is Content Leaving the Dot-com Era?

Image source: PhotoDune At the moment, we are going through content marketing turmoil of unprecedented proportions. Brands tend to rely more and more on external platforms for their content and distribution. It’s an exciting time to be in this business, but uncertainty has reached record levels. Is this reliance a good or a bad thing? Regardless of how it plays out in the end, the only certainty is that the things we take for granted regarding content strategy, are going to change drastically.

Dear Mr. Zuckerberg: Thanks for ‘Free Basics’ in Africa, But We’re Not Totally Convinced

About a week ago, Nigeria — Africa’s largest economy and most populous country — became the 40th country in the world, and the 22nd in Africa, to join Facebook’s Free Basics . With over 15 million active users (and growing), Facebook is very popular in Nigeria. Actually, it’s more popular than the internet in Nigeria. In a 2015 survey by Geopoll , commissioned by Quartz, up to 65 percent of Nigerians who participated in the survey agree with the statement that “Facebook is the internet.” It’s a shocking realization, but it makes sense since many Nigerians spend a huge chunk of their “internet time” on Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp. (Note: for those who don’t know, Instagram and Whatsapp are also owned by Facebook.) Free Basics, which just launched in Nigeria, is part of Mark Zuckerberg’s Internet.org initiative to bring internet access to billions of people living in the world’s developing regions. With Free Basics, users have free access to a “limited edition” of the internet; they can access services and information on selected websites — but cannot access all of the internet

Spring Is A Majestic Wonderland In These Infrared Photos Of NYC

A photo posted by Instagram | NYC | Paolo (@paolopettigiani) on May 22, 2016 at 8:11am PDT When spring finally, well, springs, its brilliance can feel unreal. The sky, we’re reminded, can dress itself in a spectrum of hues that includes so much more than pantsuit grey or high rise charcoal. Blue exists! The sun exists! And don’t even get us started on the blooms.  To capture the surreality of springtime in New York City, 24-year-old photographer Paolo Pettigiani photoshopped images he snapped of Central Park to give them an infrared-filtered appearance. He describes the inspiration of the project on his personal site: “The purpose is highlight the majesty and the contrast of nature included in the famous Big Apple’s skyscrapers.”  Infrared is often used to highlight the beauty, novelty or sublimity of nature, or of a landscape unfamiliar to the artist. Of note are Richard Mosse’s infrared snaps of the Congo , which juxtapose the violent weaponry wielded by its subjects with the playfulness of neon pinks and brilliant blues. The effect is especially powerful when you add to it the consideration that infrared is a type of light on a wavelength that’s not visible to the human eye. So, the message communicated by the image’s vibrant rosiness and clear cerulean hues could be that the subject is beyond comprehension by the viewer; it’s too picturesque.  Check out the new #infrared project on @behance !!! You Are What You Post Online

On Thursday, James Clapper, the Director of National Intelligence, signed a new policy that will allow government investigators to review a person’s public social media accounts before deciding whether to issue a security clearance. Welcome to the new Normal. While this is a limited change–it will likely be handled through an automated search that will only find public postings from accounts that are explicitly tied to the individual under review–it is a significant step into the 21st century, moving beyond a time when investigators focused largely on analog information collection in an increasingly digital era of communications and sharing. During a hearing to review the new decision, Rep.

Kerry Washington’s Reason For Taking A Digital Detox Is Perfect

By now, many of us are well aware of the benefits to be gained from taking a tech break — and of course, that extends to some of the busiest and most plugged-in people: celebrities. Research shows constant device use can lead to emotional and physical health problems . And for public figures who are barraged with messages, comments and emails from people on a regular basis, those effects likely feel heightened. Actress Kerry Washington is no exception.

New Polaroid-Like Instant Camera Literally an Impossible Project

Once upon a time, the coolest camera in the world was the Polaroid Swinger, a $19.95 instant camera that I got for a bar-mitzvah present in 1968 (or so a faded memory tells me). All the kids wanted one back then, thanks the incessant ear worm commercial jingle , apparently sung by Barry Manilow in a spot starring a pre- Love Story Ali McGraw. An appropriately-named Dutch outfit called the Impossible Project wants to defy the odds and current consumer photo behavior in this Instagram/selfie age by bringing back the coolness of the Swinger and instant cameras in general with its Polaroid-inspired I-1 model . The I-1 is now on sale at the MoMA Design Store in SoHo in lower Manhattan, where the company held a chic coming out party last week, for $299, but it will be available via the usual consumer technology retail suspects on May 24.
